Talking to Children about a Parent's Sex Addiction | World of ...

Talking to Children about a Parent's Sex AddictionWorking with sex addiction clients who are parents inevitably brings up the question, ?How and what do we tell the children??

The answer to this question varies from family to family and with the children?s ages and developmental level. Regardless of whether the children are young or adults, parents always want to do the best that they can to help their children through this process.

Children of any age in any family where addiction is present can present a unique challenge. Questions arise as to what, if and how much to tell children about the addiction. Another question that arises is how much the children have been affected by the sexual addiction.

Talking to children about a partner?s sex addiction can be an especially daunting task for a parent. Thoughtful consideration needs to be given as to how to present the information in an appropriate manner. Often, ?sweeping problems under the rug? has been an issue in the sex addict?s family or that of their partner?s family of origin, and secrets and lies have played a role in the addictive cycle for the adults involved. So communicating effectively in a way that benefits the children can be an important step toward breaking this negative cycle.

Parents? behaviors and the way they relate with each other affect children deeply and profoundly. When parents are in crisis, there can be times where a parent does not communicate well with their child, or exhibits depression and anxiety that the child senses. Poor relational skills on a parent?s part can be a source of upset and hurt for children, and can result in the child internalizing negative messages about relationships that follow them into their adult life.

As much as parents wish to shield children from their own mistakes, keeping secrets does not accomplish this.

Prior to disclosing information to children, it is very helpful to speak with a skilled therapist and give careful consideration to what is going to be said. It may be the best choice not to share information regarding the sex addict?s acting-out behaviors; the important thing is to engage in an honest dialogue for a child?s feelings to be heard and voiced.

Older or adult children may need to be told more information, so that their perception of what has occurred is validated, and they can build the coping strategies to manage their feelings surrounding what has happened in the family system.

Regardless, it is very important that parents model addressing problems directly, rather than covertly to propagate healthy strategies for dealing with life issues. A solid relationship with a skilled therapist trained in love and sex addiction can help guide parents through this process.

Facebook?to explain its News Feed at Aug. 6 event

Social media

Facebook

Duane Hoffman / NBC News

The Facebook News Feed is a source of frustration and confusion for many. Why does it show the things it shows? Why doesn't it show every photo posted by that one girl you like? How do you control it? The social network will finally break things down on Aug. 6.

According to the press invitation for 10 a.m. PT / 1 p.m. ET on Tuesday at Facebook's headquarters in Menlo Park, Calif., Facebook will be "taking a deeper look at the ranking algorithms that determine which stories appear at the top of your feed" and discussing "a specific update to organic ranking that?s coming up."

We also expect to hear plenty of reminders about the signals we can give Facebook to help it better rank content in the News Feed. For example, liking an item, commenting, sharing, or otherwise interacting with a post can indicate that we want to see more items like that. On the flipside, hiding the post from our News Feed using the dropdown menu, signals that we don't want to see similar items as much.

How Facebook intends to improve or change the News Feed ranking remains a mystery though ? until Aug. 6, at least.

Want more tech news or interesting links? You'll get plenty of both if you keep up with Rosa Golijan, the writer of this post, by following her on?Twitter, subscribing to her?Facebook posts, or circling her on?Google+.

BMW net profit rises despite Europe

FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) ? German luxury car maker BMW AG said Thursday it overcame tough auto markets in Europe to post a 9 percent increase in net profit in the second quarter.

Profits rose to 1.39 billion euros ($1.85 billion) from 1.28 billion in the same quarter a year ago as revenue rose 1.8 percent to 19.5 billion euros. The company's profit performance beat the consensus of analysts' expectations of 1.29 billion euros as compiled by financial information provider FactSet.

The Munich-based company also said it had profit margins of 9.6 percent, toward the upper end of its goal of 8-10 percent. Even so, the margin was down on last year's 11.6 percent.

"Despite serious headwinds in many auto markets in Europe, the BMW Group had a strong second quarter," CEO Norbert Reithofer said in a statement.

BMW has seen stronger sales in the first half of the year from its mainstay 3-series car and from its X1 small SUV.

The company's earnings repeated the pattern of the past few quarters: Strong sales in the recovering U.S. economy and emerging markets such as China outweighed lower demand in its biggest market, Europe. First-half sales by number of vehicles were flat in Europe but rose 15 percent China and 9 percent in the United States.

European auto sales have been undermined by a near 4-year crisis over too much debt that has led governments to cut spending and raise taxes, deepening recessions and worsening unemployment. Europe-wide sales, according to the European auto makers' association, ACEA, fell 6.6 percent for the first six months of the year.

BMW shares traded down 0.33 percent at 73.01 euros shortly after the stock market opened in Germany.

This Date In Baseball

July 31

1930?Lou Gehrig drove in eight runs with a grand slam and two doubles as the New York Yankees outlasted the Boston Red Sox 14-13.

1932?Cleveland's Municipal Stadium opened and Lefty Grove and the Philadelphia A's beat the Indians 1-0 before 76,979 fans.

1934?The St. Louis Cardinals defeated the Cincinnati Reds 8-6 in 18 innings at Cincinnati as Dizzy Dean and Tony Freitas both went the distance.

1954?Joe Adcock hit four home runs and a double to lead the Milwaukee Braves to a 15-7 victory over the Brooklyn Dodgers at Ebbets Field. Adcock's 18 total bases set a major league record at the time. Adcock homered in the second inning off Don Newcombe, doubled in the third and homered in the fifth off Erv Palica. He connected off Pete Wojey in the seventh and off Johnny Podres in the ninth. Adcock saw only seven pitches and his double off the left-center field fence just missed going out by inches.

2002?Mike Mussina became the second pitcher in major league history to give up six doubles in one inning, during the New York Yankees' 17-6 loss to Texas. Hall of Famer Lefty Grove allowed that many with Boston in 1934 against Washington.

2007?The New York Yankees tied a franchise record by hitting eight home runs, including a pair by Hideki Matsui, in a 16-3 rout of the Chicago White Sox. New York last hit eight homers in a game in a doubleheader opener at the Philadelphia Athletics on June 28, 1939.

2010?Carlos Gonzalez hit a game-ending home run to complete the cycle, and Colorado rallied to a 6-5 win after blowing a three-run lead in the eighth inning to the Chicago Cubs.

2011?Justin Verlander came within four outs of another no-hitter, outpitching an angry Jered Weaver as the Detroit Tigers beat the Los Angeles Angels 3-2. Maicer Izturis lined an RBI single to left field with two outs in the eighth for the Angels' only hit. Weaver was ejected for throwing a pitch over Alex Avila's head in the seventh, right after Carlos Guillen showboated on a solo home run ? infuriating the right-hander.

2011?Ricky Nolasco scattered 12 hits, Emilio Bonifacio homered and Florida handed the Atlanta Braves the 10,000th loss in franchise history. With the 3-1 loss, the Braves become the second team in big league history with 10,000 losses. The Phillies reached that mark in 2007.

Pope: 'Who am I to judge' gay people?

While on a plane from Brazil to Rome, Pope Francis told journalists that gay people should not be marginalised, saying, "If a person is gay and seeks God and has good will, who am I to judge him?"

By Anne Thompson and Henry Austin, NBC News

Pope Francis on Monday said ?who am I to judge?? gay people as he discussed one of the most divisive issues affecting the Catholic Church. ?

Luca Zennaro / Pool via EPA

Pope Francis, who gave a press conference on his flight back from Brazil, said he had stayed away from the gay marriage debate on his trip because he wanted to stay positive.

?I have yet to find anyone who has a business card that says he is gay,? the pontiff said at a press conference in which he addressed the reports of a "gay lobby" within the Vatican.

?They say they exist. If someone is gay, who searches for the Lord and has goodwill, who am I to judge?? he added. "The Catechism of the Catholic Church explains this very well. It says they should not be marginalized because of this (orientation) but that they must be integrated into society."

However, Francis reaffirmed the Catholic Church's teaching that homosexual acts are a sin, Reuters reported..

He added that he thought lobbies of any kind -- including political ones -- were bad.

"The problem is not having this orientation. We must be brothers. The problem is lobbying by this orientation, or lobbies of greedy people, political lobbies, Masonic lobbies, so many lobbies. This is the worse problem," he said.?

The press conference, which lasted for an hour and 20 minutes, was held during the flight back from his week-long trip to Brazil. ?

The official position of the Catholic Church on the issue is that while homosexual desires or attractions are not in themselves sinful, the physical acts are. All priests take a vow of celibacy when they become members of the clergy.?

Father Thomas J. Reece, a senior analyst at the National Catholic Reporter, said he thought Francis meant that "if a person is a homosexual and that person is trying to live a good life, it?s not our place to judge them."

"This is very significant I think,? he said. ?I think that recently under Pope Benedict there was a move to say that homosexuals could not be priests, that if they were seminarians they should be thrown out," he said.

?I think that Pope Francis is saying something quite different here. Whether you?re a homosexual or a heterosexual the question is whether they can live a celibate life. Other things coming out of Rome were quite different, just a few years ago," he added.

Reece said it was not known whether there really was a "gay lobby" in the Vatican, but this is used to describe a group of homosexual priests who allegedly look out of each other and engage in sexual acts.

Pope's remarks seen as good step toward inclusion

Mark Dowd, a former Dominican friar in the U.K. who left the church partly because he fell in love with a former friar, said it was ?very welcome that at least he [Francis] engages with the subject.?

However Dowd, who become a freelance broadcaster specializing in religion, doubted the comments represented a significant shift in the church, saying they made ?a nice headline? but not much else.

?On a scale of zero to 10 about where we need to be, that?s moving from about zero to three as opposed to nine or ten,? he said.

The pontiff went to Brazil on his first visit overseas since he was elected in March.

The Pope said he had stayed away from the issue of gay marriage and also abortion on his week-long trip to Brazil because he wanted to stay positive.

Francis discussed a range of issues during the press conference, admitting that the church had not done enough to develop ?the theology of women in the church.?

He said that the church had spoken on the issue of women priests and expressed itself clearly on the issue of abortion, but he added that important female biblical figures had been overlooked.

"Mary is more important than the apostles," he said. "One must think about women in the church. We have not done enough theology on this."

History's first Latin American pope said he was "pretty tired" but with a happy heart after his first overseas trip.

He said he was amazed at the number of people who turned out to see him in Brazil, especially the three million who jammed Copacabana Beach for Sunday's Mass.

He added that he was unconcerned by the tumultuous start to the trip that included the discovery of a bomb at a shrine he visited and the mob scene that took place when his driver inadvertently made wrong turn.

"There's always the danger of a crazy person, but there is also the Lord," he said. "This being close is good for everyone."
