Pope: 'Who am I to judge' gay people?
While on a plane from Brazil to Rome, Pope Francis told journalists that gay people should not be marginalised, saying, "If a person is gay and seeks God and has good will, who am I to judge him?"

Pope Francis, who gave a press conference on his flight back from Brazil, said he had stayed away from the gay marriage debate on his trip because he wanted to stay positive.
?I have yet to find anyone who has a business card that says he is gay,? the pontiff said at a press conference in which he addressed the reports of a "gay lobby" within the Vatican.
?They say they exist. If someone is gay, who searches for the Lord and has goodwill, who am I to judge?? he added. "The Catechism of the Catholic Church explains this very well. It says they should not be marginalized because of this (orientation) but that they must be integrated into society."
However, Francis reaffirmed the Catholic Church's teaching that homosexual acts are a sin, Reuters reported..
He added that he thought lobbies of any kind -- including political ones -- were bad.
"The problem is not having this orientation. We must be brothers. The problem is lobbying by this orientation, or lobbies of greedy people, political lobbies, Masonic lobbies, so many lobbies. This is the worse problem," he said.?
The press conference, which lasted for an hour and 20 minutes, was held during the flight back from his week-long trip to Brazil. ?
The official position of the Catholic Church on the issue is that while homosexual desires or attractions are not in themselves sinful, the physical acts are. All priests take a vow of celibacy when they become members of the clergy.?
Father Thomas J. Reece, a senior analyst at the National Catholic Reporter, said he thought Francis meant that "if a person is a homosexual and that person is trying to live a good life, it?s not our place to judge them."
"This is very significant I think,? he said. ?I think that recently under Pope Benedict there was a move to say that homosexuals could not be priests, that if they were seminarians they should be thrown out," he said.
?I think that Pope Francis is saying something quite different here. Whether you?re a homosexual or a heterosexual the question is whether they can live a celibate life. Other things coming out of Rome were quite different, just a few years ago," he added.
Reece said it was not known whether there really was a "gay lobby" in the Vatican, but this is used to describe a group of homosexual priests who allegedly look out of each other and engage in sexual acts.
Pope's remarks seen as good step toward inclusion
Mark Dowd, a former Dominican friar in the U.K. who left the church partly because he fell in love with a former friar, said it was ?very welcome that at least he [Francis] engages with the subject.?
However Dowd, who become a freelance broadcaster specializing in religion, doubted the comments represented a significant shift in the church, saying they made ?a nice headline? but not much else.
?On a scale of zero to 10 about where we need to be, that?s moving from about zero to three as opposed to nine or ten,? he said.

The pontiff went to Brazil on his first visit overseas since he was elected in March.
The Pope said he had stayed away from the issue of gay marriage and also abortion on his week-long trip to Brazil because he wanted to stay positive.
Francis discussed a range of issues during the press conference, admitting that the church had not done enough to develop ?the theology of women in the church.?
He said that the church had spoken on the issue of women priests and expressed itself clearly on the issue of abortion, but he added that important female biblical figures had been overlooked.
"Mary is more important than the apostles," he said. "One must think about women in the church. We have not done enough theology on this."
History's first Latin American pope said he was "pretty tired" but with a happy heart after his first overseas trip.
He said he was amazed at the number of people who turned out to see him in Brazil, especially the three million who jammed Copacabana Beach for Sunday's Mass.
He added that he was unconcerned by the tumultuous start to the trip that included the discovery of a bomb at a shrine he visited and the mob scene that took place when his driver inadvertently made wrong turn.
"There's always the danger of a crazy person, but there is also the Lord," he said. "This being close is good for everyone."

N. Korea stages anniversary parade

THE North Korean capital Pyongyang has put its military hardware on show at a major parade to mark the 60th anniversary of the Korean War ceasefire, presided over by leader Kim Jong-Un.
Thousands of troops and spectators roared "Protect Kim Jong-Un with our lives" when the youthful leader appeared on the podium, flanked by top party and military leaders at the sprawling Kim Il-Sung square, state TV showed.
The parade, to mark the 60th anniversary of the Korean War ceasefire on July 27, 1953, will be closely watched for any evidence that the North has made tangible progress in its ballistic missile programme.
The last mass military parade in the North Korean capital was held on April 15 last year for the birth centenary of the North's founder leader Kim Il-Sung.
Since then, the North successfully launched a long-range rocket in December and conducted its third nuclear test in February.
Both events drew UN sanctions and triggered a surge in military tensions on the Korean peninsula that lasted for several months.
At Saturday's parade, Kim and his troops saluted as the blue, white and red national flag and the yellow and red flag of the ruling Workers' Party were raised.
"Let's fight, fight, fight ... for our republic!" soldiers chanted.
The parade was conducted with two large portraits of Kim's father and grandfather hung on the front side of the gigantic Grand People's Study Hall, situated on the square.
Choe Ryong-Hae, the country's highest military official, said in a speech that "the proud and victorious history" created by the North's founder Kim Il-Sung and his son Kim Jong-Il had passed down to "our great general Kim Jong-Un" in a third generation succession.
"The respected leader Kim Jong-Un has upgraded our military and taken the solidarity among our people to a whole new level", Choe said.
"Peaceful environment is more important than anything else for our country that strives to achieve economic construction and improvement of the lives of people".
He said, however, North Korea has to be ready for war if it wants peace.
"All servicemen and people should ... strengthen our defence and be firmly prepared to fend off any attacks from the outside."
The parade last April witnessed the first major public speech by Kim Jong-Un since coming to power following his father Kim Jong-Il's death in December 2011.
He was widely expected to make a similar address on Saturday.
China's Vice President Li Yuanchao, heading the Chinese delegation invited for the anniversary celebrations, joined Kim on the podium.
China's relationship with North Korea - famously described by Mao Zedong as being as close as "lips and teeth" - was forged in the 1950-53 Korean war which China entered to prevent the North's total defeat.
But it has weakened significantly over the years, as China's economic transformation has distanced it from the ideological rigidity of the dynastic Kim regime across the border.
In line with UN sanctions, Beijing has moved to restrict Pyongyang's financial operations in China which the international community says are the major conduit for funding its nuclear weapons programme.

Chinese toddler critically ill after parking row attack
BEIJING: A two-year-old Chinese girl was in critical condition Thursday after being thrown to the ground by a man in a row with her mother over parking, a hospital and state media said.
The man, identified only by his surname Han, wanted to park by a bus stop in Beijing, the Beijing Times said, citing a witness.
But the woman pedestrian would not move out of his way as she was checking on her daughter at the time.
Han, in his 40s, emerged from his Hyundai Sonata and hit the woman before taking the toddler out of her pram, holding her up and throwing her "forcefully" to the ground, said the witness, a street stall owner surnamed Zhou.
"The baby made no noises after being dropped, not even a cry of pain," the newspaper quoted Zhou as saying.
Another man came out of the car and also beat the mother before the pair drove away, it added.
The mother rushed the girl to a nearby medical facility and the report said she died while being transferred to Beijing Tiantan Hospital.
But that hospital indicated to AFP that the toddler remained under treatment.
"She is still alive," said a hospital official, declining to be named or to provide further details.
The Legal Daily said the girl remained in critical condition, adding she had stopped breathing at one point and was being kept alive by a respirator.
Police found Han, who was released from prison this year after serving a sentence for theft, in a hot spring bathhouse on Wednesday and detained him, said the report.
He could be charged with serious assault if the girl survives, the Legal Daily cited lawyers as saying, making him eligible for a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison.
A death sentence could be handed down if she dies and he is charged with murder, according to other Chinese reports.

How big can Apple go? 13-inch iPad may be on the way

Apple's current iPad lineup could get a new 13-in. big brother.
Your next iPhone or iPad may be noticeably bigger than the device you?re carrying around today. Apple is reportedly testing a whopping 13-inch display for the iPad and larger iPhone displays, according to officials at the company?s suppliers.
Over the past few months, Apple has allegedly asked for prototypes of an iPhone with a display larger than four inches and a screen design for a tablet just under 13 inches, The Wall Street Journal reported. If Apple does decide to launch a bigger iPad, we may see this device as soon as the first half of 2014, according to Korean news source ET News.
This follows reports from last month that suggested Apple was experimenting with 4.7 and 5.7-inch screens for its future iPhones, although the company (as per usual) has not confirmed any plans for its upcoming products.

There?s no telling if these purported large-screened iPhones and iPads will ever make it to the market, but these reports suggest Apple is brainstorming new ways to appeal to consumers and snag the top smartphone spot from Samsung. While Apple is still the industry leader when it comes to tablet sales, Samsung claimed 33.1 percent of the smartphone market in the first quarter of 2013, while Apple only accounted for 17.9 percent of handset sales during the same period, according to Strategy Analytics.
The Wall Street Journal?s sources also suggest that Apple plans to refresh its 9.7-inch iPad with in-cell touch technology to create a thinner, sleeker design. Apple is currently ramping up production for this alleged iPad model just as suppliers have begun mass production on components for the new iPhone as well.
The upcoming iPhone that is expected to launch during the second half of this year will have the same screen size and resolution as the current iPhone 5, the newspaper reports. At the same time, Apple is working with manufacturing partners in Asia to create a less-expensive non-metal iPhone that will come in multiple color options.

Images snapped by the Hubble Space Telescope suggest that gold may have been generated by a violent neutron star collision that also yielded lead, platinum, uranium and other heavy elements.
The stellar smashup was detected on June 3, when NASA?s Swift satellite observed a gamma-ray burst 3.9 billion light-years away. Astrophysicists believe that a crash between two neutron stars, the dense, neutron-rich cores left over after massive stars explode, released the 0.2-second flash of energy.
Images snapped by the Hubble Space Telescope nine days later saw evidence for a bounty of heavy elements amounting to about 1 percent of the sun?s mass and including several moon masses of gold, says Edo Berger of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics in Cambridge, Mass. Given the amount of gold and the fact that these collisions probably happen once every 10,000 or 100,000 years in any given galaxy, such crashes could account for all of the gold in the universe, he says.
Berger?s team posted its findings June 17 on arxiv.org.
The idea that neutron star collisions create heavy elements was suggested in the 1970s by James Lattimer, now at Stony Brook University in New York, and colleagues. Back then, Lattimer says, there were few observations of neutron stars and computers were slow. So, Lattimer says, ?the calculations were fairly crude, and I?m not sure people believed the model that much.?
Instead, most astrophysicists thought elements heavier than iron ? those that don?t form via fusion within a star ? resulted from massive stars collapsing in supernovas. But computer simulations have had a tough time showing that this is possible, Lattimer says.
Although Lattimer says it?s ?comforting? that the findings fit with the neutron star theory, he notes the results are ?still fairly speculative.? The Hubble images show a glow of infrared light that Berger?s team says is characteristic of radiation emitted by the radioactive decay of heavy elements. Yet the team can?t rule out that the light was produced by the gamma-ray burst itself, Lattimer says.
Upcoming missions such as the Advanced Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory will make it easier to find short gamma-ray bursts and may confirm whether they are triggered by neutron stars, says astrophysicist Neil Gehrels of NASA?s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md.
And new telescopes such as the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope that monitor larger swaths of sky will make it easier to distinguish between a gamma-ray burst?s afterglow and shine coming from heavy elements. Finding signs of heavy elements, which require a lot of neutrons, in association with short gamma-ray bursts is the best evidence yet that neutron star collisions make heavy elements.
