(AP) ? Russell Brand and Katy Perry are getting a divorce, the British comedian told The Associated Press Friday.

"Sadly, Katy and I are ending our marriage. I'll always adore her and I know we'll remain friends," said Brand, 36, offering no other details.

He and the 27-year-old pop singer were married in October 2010 at a resort inside a tiger reserve in India.

Brand's recent film credits include "Arthur," ''Hop" and "Get Him to the Greek." He is among the ensemble starring alongside Tom Cruise in "Rock of Ages," set for release next year.

Perry's run of No. 1 singles earned her the distinction of becoming MTV's first artist of the year earlier this month. She hosted "Saturday Night Live" on Dec. 10 and gave no indication the couple was in trouble.

The couple got engaged in January 2010 after meeting at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards, where he hosted and she performed.

He was effusive about his bride while promoting projects earlier this year, saying marrying Perry has "given me much more strength in what I do."

"For a long while, what I do professionally was all that mattered to me really," he said in March. "Now I think, well, whatever I do, I'll just go back to her, and that's incredibly comforting."

He cited irreconcilable differences in papers filed Friday in Los Angeles Superior Court.

A representative for Perry did not immediately return a call seeking comment.

Federal Appeals Court Rules Telecommunications Companies ...

In recent days, a federal appeals court ruled that a 2008 law granting telecommunications companies legal immunity for helping the National Security Agency with an email and telephone eavesdropping program is constitutional.

A three-judge panel of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals unanimously affirmed the lower court ruling that the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) is indeed constitutional.

The appeal was involving a case that consolidated 33 different lawsuits filed against various telecom companies, including AT&T, Sprint Nextel, Verizon Communications Inc. and BellSouth Corp. on behalf of these companies? customers.

The plaintiffs were represented by lawyers including the San Francisco-based Electronic Frontier Foundation and the American Civil Liberties Union. They accused the companies of violating the law and the privacy of its customers by collaborating with NSA on intelligence gathering.

The case is rooted in the new surveillance rules passed by Congress in 2009; these included protection from legal liability for telecommunications companies that allegedly helped the U.S. spy on Americans without warrants.

Cindy Cohn, legal director of the Electronic Frontier Foundation, who argued the case before the panel was quoted as saying in the December 29th foxnews.com article, ?Court OKs Immunity for Telecoms in Wiretap Case?: ?I?m very disappointed. I think the court reaches to try to put lipstick on a pig here. I think what Congress did was an abdication of its duty to protect people from illegal surveillance.?

In its ruling, the court made note of comments put forth by the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence involving the legal immunity?s role in helping the government gather intelligence.

Judge M. Margaret McKeown was quoted as saying: ?It emphasized that electronic intelligence gathering depends in great part on cooperation from private companies ? and that if litigation were allowed to proceed against persons allegedly assisting in such activities, the private sector might be unwilling to cooperate with lawful government requests in the future.?

However, in a separate opinion, a three-judge panel of the court pointed to two other lawsuits that challenged the warrantless surveillance program. Two groups of telecom customers sued the NSA for violating their privacy by collecting Internet data from AT&T from telecom companies in the surveillance program authorized by President George W. Bush.

Government lawyers have made attempts to stop such cases, on the grounds that defending the program in court would jeopardize national security. The suits will be sent back to U.S. District Court in San Francisco.

America?s Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act of 1978 is an Act of Congress, which put in place procedures for the physical and electronic surveillance and collection of ?foreign intelligence information? between ?foreign powers? and ?agents of foreign powers?. This may also include American citizens and permanent residents suspected of being engaged in espionage and violating U.S. law on territory under United States control.

The National Security Agency/Central Security Service (NSA/CSS) is a cryptologic intelligence agency of the United States Department of Defense responsible for the collection and analysis of foreign communications and foreign signals intelligence, as well as protecting U.S. government communications and information systems, which involves cryptanalysis and cryptography.

Yangon blast kills 17, injures 80: Myanmar police (Reuters)

YANGON (Reuters) ? At least 17 people died and 80 were injured in an early morning explosion at an industrial district on Thursday in an eastern suburb of Myanmar's biggest city, Yangon, police said.

Earlier, witnesses had spoken of about 50 dead bodies after the 2 a.m. (1930 GMT Wednesday) blast in an industrial district of the country's commercial hub.

But a police officer said 12 men and five women had been confirmed dead as of 6 a.m. He said further deaths were expected.

Some witnesses said a fire had broken out at a chemical storage warehouse, causing an explosion that triggered several smaller blasts. Police said three firemen were among the dead.

Fire engines from all parts of Yangon were at the scene, witnesses said. Fire was reported to have spread to a nearby shipyard and factories.

Television pictures showed rescue teams carrying casualties on stretchers in the middle of the night around what appeared to be badly damaged buildings.

The shock from the loud explosion in the area was felt by many people in eastern and central Yangon.

Police would not comment on the cause of the disaster.

"There are many casualties. We are not in a position to give you further information. We are still looking into it," a second police officer from Mingalar Taungnyunt Township Police Station told Reuters.

Last Wednesday, December 21, a woman was killed and another injured when what was described as a bomb exploded in a public toilet near the main campus of Yangon University.

Bomb blasts are common in Myanmar, which has been torn by ethnic rebellions and armed struggle against successive governments since independence in 1948.

Miami Heat Intro Video: All of the Lights, Egos, Hype

The Miami Heat aren't exactly trying to play down their star power or title expectations with their 2011-12 intro video, set to "All of the Lights" by Kanye West.

Debuting tonight before the Heat's 115-107 win over the Celtics, the video shows Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh, LeBron James & Co. in all their grandiosity.

In a word ... EH. Last year's intro video, set to "In The Air Tonight," just invoked a visceral sense of impending awesomeness, even if you loathe the Heat.

"All of the Lights" is a little underwhelming. Maybe that's a good thing, though. After last year's Finals failure, maybe Miami should let its play do the talking:

For troops, cards and care packages bring a touch of home to Christmas

FORWARD OPERATING BASE PASAB, Afghanistan ? Even in the dust and grime of war in Afghanistan, the yuletide spirit takes hold.

Most holidays here come and go without fanfare; missed birthdays, anniversaries, and other personal milestones are more difficult. But for many soldiers, being away from their families at Christmastime is a little tougher still.

For some of the younger soldiers, it?s the first Christmas away from family; some of the older ones haven?t made it home in years.

?This holiday season will be is extremely difficult for our soldiers due to separation from family and engaging in a war that will not stop for Christmas,? Battalion Chaplain Capt. Omari Thompson of Miami said.

?We are still fighting a tough fight, we are still taking casualties,? he said.

His unit, 1st Battalion, 32nd Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, serves on the front line of combat operations in Regional Command-South and has suffered the brigade?s most casualties for the deployment.

?I am a soldier who is struggling during this holiday season as well,? said Thompson, who will be missing his wife and four children. He has an especially strong bond with the soldiers he serves, having helped so many of them cope with the loss of their fellow infantrymen.

?I don?t try to put on an over-the-top face of excitement, masking how I truly feel. I share my struggles with them and my desire to be back home. Before long, we are reminiscing about the good times with our loved ones, telling stories and laughing.

?Then I take the joy in that moment and use it as motivation to inspire and invigorate them to continue their grueling mission. That is the key to completing this deployment and getting home to those good times,? he said.

On Christmas Day, Thompson will visit each of the battalion?s combat outposts with a message of peace, love and salvation.

?I hope to bring them a sense of hope and relief with this sermon that, though they are not home with their families, though they will not open gifts under a tree, there is still cause for celebration and jubilee at the true meaning of Christmas,? he said.

Col. Mark Stevens, of Topeka, Kan., team leader for the Human Terrain Team attached to the 3rd Brigade, has served in the Army for 28 years, but is still moved by the scores of Christmas cards and care packages that pour in during the holiday season.

He remembers making a card and putting together a care package for his dad, who fought in Vietnam. He also remembers knowing that it would be the only holiday care package his father would get. For soldiers serving now, things are different.

?We get inundated with Christmas packages from all over the United States, he said. ?We get Christmas cards, too, from kids we don?t know; we get packages from people we don?t know. It makes you feel great. It makes you feel loved.?

Sgt. Melissa Stewart, of Phoenix, who is with the brigade Headquarters and Headquarters Company, was thrilled to receive a plastic jar of caramel popcorn in a box addressed To Any Soldier.

?You aren?t in America. You can?t just go to Safeway and find this,? she beamed as she downed a handful.

Sgt. Jettadiah Bush, of Zion Chapel, Ala., also appreciates the packages.

?It means people are out there still rooting for us,? he said.

Bush, who is with Company C, 1st Battalion, 52nd Aviation Regiment, 16th Combat Aviation Brigade, will miss his 7-month-old daughter?s first Christmas. He was in Afghanistan when she was born, but got to see her when he was home on leave.

Bush and his wife have decided to celebrate when he returns in February. His wife is leaving the Christmas decorations up until then, including the tree and outdoor lights.

?I love Christmas,? he said, smiling. ?I promise you, there will be Christmas lights when I get home.?

Along with the care packages, Christmas cards are always appreciated by the soldiers, especially those from children.

They enjoy reading the misspelled words and the good wishes.

Stevens is especially fond of one ? its edges folded just a little off, its decorations glued as only a kindergartner can. It reads, ?From Brooklyn, Thank You for Protekten Us, Merry Christmas, Ho Ho Ho.?

Simple ones penned by an adult can mean a lot, too: ?Thank you for your service and sacrifice. May God bless you and keep you safe. Merry Christmas.?

At Forward Operating Base Bostick, just a few miles from the Pakistani border in northern Kunar province, soldiers with 2nd Battalion, 27th Infantry Regiment, were enjoying cards and holiday wishes from home, too.

Pfc. Sean Harvey, of Pittman, N.J., recently received a stack of holiday greetings from third-graders back home in New Jersey, thanking him for his service. The cards were meant for Thanksgiving, but had only just arrived. It hardly mattered.

?That?s a really good feeling. When you?re a long way from home and it?s the holidays, it means a lot to hear from people and to know they?re thinking about us,? Harvey said.

Like Bush and many others, Pfc. Sabrina Little, of Hampton, Va., will hold off celebrating Christmas until she returns home and can be with her fianc?, who is also a soldier. She and a few of her friends at FOB Bostick will exchange gifts, but she?ll be thinking of home and, she says, missing her grandmother?s potato salad.

?I?m going to miss my family a lot. My mom isn?t used to having her kids so far away from home. But you just try to make the best of it while you?re here, and with the friends I have (on base), we?ll celebrate and try to have fun.?

Capt. Mike Cabanas, of Chatham, N.J., who is also with 2-27, will miss both his fianc?e and his dad?s special Christmas chicken Parmesan dinner.

?Out here, you?re not really aware of what time of year it is; it doesn?t feel like the holidays,? he said. ?It?s sort of like ?Groundhog Day,? because you?re doing what you always do.

?So hearing from people back home makes a difference. Their support means a lot,? he said.

While soldiers have Skype, email and other electronic communications their World War II or Vietnam predecessors could not have imagined, those tools sometimes make things even tougher.

?Facebook is the devil,? joked Spc. Crystal Hernandez, of Dilley, Texas, as laughter erupted among her peers with D Troop, 4th Squadron, 4th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division at FOB Pasab. Many agreed that communicating electronically has its ups and downs. While it?s nice to see family and friends enjoying holiday parties and traditions, it can sometimes make them feel more isolated and lonely.

When that happens, they look to their fellow soldiers for solace.

?There?s an unspoken connection that you have with your brothers,? Cabanas said. ?Everybody knows they?d rather be home with their families; you don?t even have to talk about it. But we?re here with each other, and as long as we?re all together, that makes it easier.?

Don?t ever feel sorry for a deployed soldier, though. Most will tell you they hate that more than anything else.

?We love to be told ?thank you,? but don?t pity us,? Stevens said. ?We volunteered. This is what we do. This is why we joined.

?Not every American is willing to come over here and lay down their lives, but if you talk to any soldier out here, they?ll say that?s why they joined. When there is a time of war, we?ll be there.?

Egypt Salafists against improving ties with Israel

Egypt?s leading Salafi movement on Sunday clarified the party's stance on diplomatic relations with Israel, saying that it would oppose an improvement in ties between the two countries.

"We will stand firmly against normalization [of ties] between the two countries in a variety of forms, and against any entity that wants to harm Egypt's identity," the movement announced in a written statement quoted by Army Radio.

Egypt's Brotherhood says it took 40% in latest vote

Salafis represent a fundamentalist religious stream that seeks to create an Islamic state according to strict social codes and a legal system based entirely on Islamic law. The various Salafi parties have thus far been the biggest surprise of the Egyptian parliamentary elections, taking about 30 percent of votes to place second after the Muslim Brotherhood which garnered around 40%.

The announcement came a week after a spokesman for the group gave an interview to Army Radio, during which he said "the peace agreement with Israel will not be canceled."

Nour Party spokesman Yusri Hammad said during the unprecedented interview "we are not against the agreement but we say that Egypt is committed to the agreements signed by the previous governments."

?If there are some clauses that the people of Egypt want to change in the agreements, then these belong on the negotiating table,? he said. ?We respect all treaties.?

The head of the Salafi movement last Tuesday also spoke about the peace treaty issue and said that the party would respect Cairo?s 1979 peace treaty with Israel.

Representatives of the party quickly backtracked, however, saying the matter was still being looked into.

?Treaties Egypt has signed must be upheld ? we intend to respect them,? Nour party chairman Emad Abdel Ghaffour told a press conference in Cairo, adding though that Israel has not implemented certain clauses in the agreement regarding the Palestinians.

These include ?a solution to the Palestinian issue, their right to self-determination, self-governance and the creation of a Palestinian state on Palestinian land,? Abdel Ghaffour said.

Oren Kessler contributed to this report.

Labor board approves new union election rules

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The National Labor Relations Board has approved rules that could give labor unions a boost in organizing new members.

The rules are expected to speed the pace of union elections by simplifying procedures and reducing delays. That could help unions make inroads at businesses such as Target and Wal-Mart, which have successfully resisted union organizing for years.

Unions say the old rules allowed companies to file frivolous appeals, holding up elections for months or years. But business groups claim the new plan will allow "ambush" elections that don't give company managers enough time to respond.

Labor board chairman Mark Pearce said Wednesday that the rules give employees who want a union the right to vote in a timely manner without being hampered by needless litigation.

Pitt/Children's Hospital team: Cell membrane proteins could provide targets for broader vaccines

Pitt/Children's Hospital team: Cell membrane proteins could provide targets for broader vaccines [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 22-Dec-2011

PITTSBURGH, Dec. 22 Vaccines with broader reach might be made by stimulating specialized immune cells to recognize foreign cell membrane proteins that are shared across bacterial species, say researchers from Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC and the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine in a report published online today in Immunity. The approach could be particularly beneficial in preventing infection by multi-drug resistant organisms.

The genetic heritage of organisms such as oysters, frogs and fish indicate that a family of cell-signaling molecules called interleukin-17 (IL-17) arose in evolution before the advent of T cells, one of the main arms of the immune system in humans. The human IL-17 gene is turned on in a specialized group of immune cells in the T helper-cell lineage, known as Th17 cells, explained senior author Jay K. Kolls, M.D., professor of pediatrics and immunology, Pitt School of Medicine, and vice chair for translational research, Department of Pediatrics, and director, Richard King Mellon Foundation Institute for Pediatric Research, Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC.

"That development led us to think that perhaps Th17 cells confer some immunological advantage for eliminating infectious organisms beyond the antibody strategy that we typically employ when we make vaccines," he explained. "We wanted to better understand what role Th17 cells play."

The research team exposed mice to Klebsiella pneumoniae bacteria, a common cause of lung infection, and re-exposed them several weeks after they recovered from the first pneumonia. They found that the presence of the germ in both instances led to increased numbers of Th17 cells in the lungs and spleen. But when they blocked IL-17, they found the mice still developed immunity to infection. The antibody response, which is controlled by B cells, did not require IL-17 to become established.

Next, they infected mice bred to lack B cells, which make antibodies, with the bacteria. They found that the animals could become immunized against repeat infection as long as IL-17 was unblocked, allowing Th17 cells to develop an immunological memory of the Klebsiella bacteria.

The researchers determined also that while antibodies react to sugar complexes called polysaccharides in the bacterial coat or capsule, Th17 cells respond to protein complexes in the cell membrane. Those proteins, which are integral to the structure of the cell membrane, tend to be similar across bacterial strains, unlike the capsular polysaccharides, which are variable, Dr. Kolls said.

"Some current vaccines require generating a response to a number of these capsular sugars for effective immunization," he said. "An approach that harnesses the stability of the Th17 cell response to common proteins has the potential to simplify vaccination and provide a broader spectrum of coverage. This strategy may be particularly useful against bacteria that have diverse capsular sugars or multi-drug resistant organisms."

The team includes lead author Kong Chen, Ph.D., and others from LSU Health Sciences Center and Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC, as well as researchers from the University of Queensland, Brisbane, Australia, and the University of Alabama, Birmingham.

The project was funded by grants from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Public Health Service.

Finally, some bipartisanship _ oops, nevermind

(AP) ? Sen. Mitch McConnell does not high-five easily or often. But a deal to keep American workers' taxes from rising on Jan. 1 was reason enough for the coolest negotiator in the Senate to lift a hand on camera and slap ? or pat ? some skin.

His celebration was premature.

Furious House Republicans said McConnell's deal for a two-month extension of payroll tax cuts is 10 months too few. They are prepared to let everyone's Social Security taxes rise an average $20 a week for a while if that's what it takes to extend the cut for a year. And they are intent on dragging the vacationing Senate back to Washington to do it their way.

"I don't care about the political implications," Rep. Tom Reed, R-N.Y., said Monday.

Senate Republicans do, especially those up for re-election at a time when Americans are more apt to trust car salesmen than Congress.

"The House Republicans' plan to scuttle the deal to help middle-class families is irresponsible and wrong," said one, Sen. Scott Brown, R-Mass.

It was at least the third time in a year dominated by partisan standoffs that House conservatives, led by a nearly 90-member freshman class, brought GOP leaders up short on their plans to compromise. The first was last spring when they forced GOP leaders to rewrite spending bills to deepen federal spending cuts. Then there were objections in the summer over raising the nation's debt limit, which brought the government to the brink of a first-ever default.

Now, the question of compromise is keeping a tax cut ? the stuff of Republican dogma ? hanging on the eve of the presidential and congressional election year.

At stake are Social Security payroll taxes paid by 160 million workers. President Barack Obama and the last Congress agreed to cut them by 2 percentage points a year ago, but only for a year. On Jan. 1, they go back up to 6.2 percent if Congress doesn't act. Also, people without jobs for more than six months start losing benefits and doctors' Medicare fees get cut by 27 percent.

House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, derided what he said was yet another instance of the Senate "kicking the can down the road" with only a two-month renewal of the status quo. Doing it for an entire year would mean more certainty "for job creators and others," he said.

House Republicans huddled late into the night and planned to instead call Tuesday for formal negotiations with the Senate, rejecting the two-month version.

The dustup marked an unusual disconnect between Boehner and McConnell. Even before the 2010 elections made Boehner speaker, he and McConnell coordinated closely on tactics. This year, they've stayed in close contact, either by phone or by shuttling quietly between their office suites at the Capitol, their aides say.

Kentucky's McConnell is not meek when it comes to partisan brinksmanship.

He's vowed, for example, to use his perch as the Senate's top Republican to deny Obama a second term. He considers cartoons mocking his hardcore negotiating style badges of honor, and posts them on his office wall. But even McConnell spoke up Saturday in favor of compromise on the payroll tax, lest another standoff drop Congress' approval ratings the few points they have left to fall.

"In order to achieve something around here, we have to compromise," he intoned just before the Senate's vote Saturday on the two-month tax cut extension. "That is, in fact, what we have done. We have crafted a bill not designed to fail but designed to pass."

It passed overwhelmingly, 89-10, and senators immediately bolted for a month-long recess, a year of sniping and ugliness finished at last ? or so they thought.

House Republicans immediately balked and insisted on their one-year version, six times more expensive and paid for in part by raising Medicare premiums for people whose incomes exceed $80,000 a year. Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid made clear he had no intention of calling the Senate back into session to vote on that or any other bill.

A two-month deal, the House freshmen suggested, was not worth having because it did not afford business owners and others enough time to plan. They were outraged at the Senate ? including 39 of its 47 Republicans ? for voting for a two-month extension.

"The Senate just needs to do its job," said Rep. Ann Marie Buerkle, R-N.Y. "What they sent us over was an insult to the American people."

"That vote (in the Senate) had a lot more to do with getting out of Washington and going back home and spending time with our loved ones," said Rep. Steve Womack, R-Ark.

So it's all or nothing? House Republicans are prepared to let taxes rise on Jan. 1?

"We didn't say it's all or nothing," Womack said.
