Talking to Children about a Parent's Sex Addiction | World of ...

Talking to Children about a Parent's Sex AddictionWorking with sex addiction clients who are parents inevitably brings up the question, ?How and what do we tell the children??

The answer to this question varies from family to family and with the children?s ages and developmental level. Regardless of whether the children are young or adults, parents always want to do the best that they can to help their children through this process.

Children of any age in any family where addiction is present can present a unique challenge. Questions arise as to what, if and how much to tell children about the addiction. Another question that arises is how much the children have been affected by the sexual addiction.

Talking to children about a partner?s sex addiction can be an especially daunting task for a parent. Thoughtful consideration needs to be given as to how to present the information in an appropriate manner. Often, ?sweeping problems under the rug? has been an issue in the sex addict?s family or that of their partner?s family of origin, and secrets and lies have played a role in the addictive cycle for the adults involved. So communicating effectively in a way that benefits the children can be an important step toward breaking this negative cycle.

Parents? behaviors and the way they relate with each other affect children deeply and profoundly. When parents are in crisis, there can be times where a parent does not communicate well with their child, or exhibits depression and anxiety that the child senses. Poor relational skills on a parent?s part can be a source of upset and hurt for children, and can result in the child internalizing negative messages about relationships that follow them into their adult life.

As much as parents wish to shield children from their own mistakes, keeping secrets does not accomplish this.

Prior to disclosing information to children, it is very helpful to speak with a skilled therapist and give careful consideration to what is going to be said. It may be the best choice not to share information regarding the sex addict?s acting-out behaviors; the important thing is to engage in an honest dialogue for a child?s feelings to be heard and voiced.

Older or adult children may need to be told more information, so that their perception of what has occurred is validated, and they can build the coping strategies to manage their feelings surrounding what has happened in the family system.

Regardless, it is very important that parents model addressing problems directly, rather than covertly to propagate healthy strategies for dealing with life issues. A solid relationship with a skilled therapist trained in love and sex addiction can help guide parents through this process.

Facebook?to explain its News Feed at Aug. 6 event

Social media

Facebook

Duane Hoffman / NBC News

The Facebook News Feed is a source of frustration and confusion for many. Why does it show the things it shows? Why doesn't it show every photo posted by that one girl you like? How do you control it? The social network will finally break things down on Aug. 6.

According to the press invitation for 10 a.m. PT / 1 p.m. ET on Tuesday at Facebook's headquarters in Menlo Park, Calif., Facebook will be "taking a deeper look at the ranking algorithms that determine which stories appear at the top of your feed" and discussing "a specific update to organic ranking that?s coming up."

We also expect to hear plenty of reminders about the signals we can give Facebook to help it better rank content in the News Feed. For example, liking an item, commenting, sharing, or otherwise interacting with a post can indicate that we want to see more items like that. On the flipside, hiding the post from our News Feed using the dropdown menu, signals that we don't want to see similar items as much.

How Facebook intends to improve or change the News Feed ranking remains a mystery though ? until Aug. 6, at least.

Want more tech news or interesting links? You'll get plenty of both if you keep up with Rosa Golijan, the writer of this post, by following her on?Twitter, subscribing to her?Facebook posts, or circling her on?Google+.

BMW net profit rises despite Europe

FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) ? German luxury car maker BMW AG said Thursday it overcame tough auto markets in Europe to post a 9 percent increase in net profit in the second quarter.

Profits rose to 1.39 billion euros ($1.85 billion) from 1.28 billion in the same quarter a year ago as revenue rose 1.8 percent to 19.5 billion euros. The company's profit performance beat the consensus of analysts' expectations of 1.29 billion euros as compiled by financial information provider FactSet.

The Munich-based company also said it had profit margins of 9.6 percent, toward the upper end of its goal of 8-10 percent. Even so, the margin was down on last year's 11.6 percent.

"Despite serious headwinds in many auto markets in Europe, the BMW Group had a strong second quarter," CEO Norbert Reithofer said in a statement.

BMW has seen stronger sales in the first half of the year from its mainstay 3-series car and from its X1 small SUV.

The company's earnings repeated the pattern of the past few quarters: Strong sales in the recovering U.S. economy and emerging markets such as China outweighed lower demand in its biggest market, Europe. First-half sales by number of vehicles were flat in Europe but rose 15 percent China and 9 percent in the United States.

European auto sales have been undermined by a near 4-year crisis over too much debt that has led governments to cut spending and raise taxes, deepening recessions and worsening unemployment. Europe-wide sales, according to the European auto makers' association, ACEA, fell 6.6 percent for the first six months of the year.

BMW shares traded down 0.33 percent at 73.01 euros shortly after the stock market opened in Germany.

This Date In Baseball

July 31

1930?Lou Gehrig drove in eight runs with a grand slam and two doubles as the New York Yankees outlasted the Boston Red Sox 14-13.

1932?Cleveland's Municipal Stadium opened and Lefty Grove and the Philadelphia A's beat the Indians 1-0 before 76,979 fans.

1934?The St. Louis Cardinals defeated the Cincinnati Reds 8-6 in 18 innings at Cincinnati as Dizzy Dean and Tony Freitas both went the distance.

1954?Joe Adcock hit four home runs and a double to lead the Milwaukee Braves to a 15-7 victory over the Brooklyn Dodgers at Ebbets Field. Adcock's 18 total bases set a major league record at the time. Adcock homered in the second inning off Don Newcombe, doubled in the third and homered in the fifth off Erv Palica. He connected off Pete Wojey in the seventh and off Johnny Podres in the ninth. Adcock saw only seven pitches and his double off the left-center field fence just missed going out by inches.

2002?Mike Mussina became the second pitcher in major league history to give up six doubles in one inning, during the New York Yankees' 17-6 loss to Texas. Hall of Famer Lefty Grove allowed that many with Boston in 1934 against Washington.

2007?The New York Yankees tied a franchise record by hitting eight home runs, including a pair by Hideki Matsui, in a 16-3 rout of the Chicago White Sox. New York last hit eight homers in a game in a doubleheader opener at the Philadelphia Athletics on June 28, 1939.

2010?Carlos Gonzalez hit a game-ending home run to complete the cycle, and Colorado rallied to a 6-5 win after blowing a three-run lead in the eighth inning to the Chicago Cubs.

2011?Justin Verlander came within four outs of another no-hitter, outpitching an angry Jered Weaver as the Detroit Tigers beat the Los Angeles Angels 3-2. Maicer Izturis lined an RBI single to left field with two outs in the eighth for the Angels' only hit. Weaver was ejected for throwing a pitch over Alex Avila's head in the seventh, right after Carlos Guillen showboated on a solo home run ? infuriating the right-hander.

2011?Ricky Nolasco scattered 12 hits, Emilio Bonifacio homered and Florida handed the Atlanta Braves the 10,000th loss in franchise history. With the 3-1 loss, the Braves become the second team in big league history with 10,000 losses. The Phillies reached that mark in 2007.

Pope: 'Who am I to judge' gay people?

While on a plane from Brazil to Rome, Pope Francis told journalists that gay people should not be marginalised, saying, "If a person is gay and seeks God and has good will, who am I to judge him?"

By Anne Thompson and Henry Austin, NBC News

Pope Francis on Monday said ?who am I to judge?? gay people as he discussed one of the most divisive issues affecting the Catholic Church. ?

Luca Zennaro / Pool via EPA

Pope Francis, who gave a press conference on his flight back from Brazil, said he had stayed away from the gay marriage debate on his trip because he wanted to stay positive.

?I have yet to find anyone who has a business card that says he is gay,? the pontiff said at a press conference in which he addressed the reports of a "gay lobby" within the Vatican.

?They say they exist. If someone is gay, who searches for the Lord and has goodwill, who am I to judge?? he added. "The Catechism of the Catholic Church explains this very well. It says they should not be marginalized because of this (orientation) but that they must be integrated into society."

However, Francis reaffirmed the Catholic Church's teaching that homosexual acts are a sin, Reuters reported..

He added that he thought lobbies of any kind -- including political ones -- were bad.

"The problem is not having this orientation. We must be brothers. The problem is lobbying by this orientation, or lobbies of greedy people, political lobbies, Masonic lobbies, so many lobbies. This is the worse problem," he said.?

The press conference, which lasted for an hour and 20 minutes, was held during the flight back from his week-long trip to Brazil. ?

The official position of the Catholic Church on the issue is that while homosexual desires or attractions are not in themselves sinful, the physical acts are. All priests take a vow of celibacy when they become members of the clergy.?

Father Thomas J. Reece, a senior analyst at the National Catholic Reporter, said he thought Francis meant that "if a person is a homosexual and that person is trying to live a good life, it?s not our place to judge them."

"This is very significant I think,? he said. ?I think that recently under Pope Benedict there was a move to say that homosexuals could not be priests, that if they were seminarians they should be thrown out," he said.

?I think that Pope Francis is saying something quite different here. Whether you?re a homosexual or a heterosexual the question is whether they can live a celibate life. Other things coming out of Rome were quite different, just a few years ago," he added.

Reece said it was not known whether there really was a "gay lobby" in the Vatican, but this is used to describe a group of homosexual priests who allegedly look out of each other and engage in sexual acts.

Pope's remarks seen as good step toward inclusion

Mark Dowd, a former Dominican friar in the U.K. who left the church partly because he fell in love with a former friar, said it was ?very welcome that at least he [Francis] engages with the subject.?

However Dowd, who become a freelance broadcaster specializing in religion, doubted the comments represented a significant shift in the church, saying they made ?a nice headline? but not much else.

?On a scale of zero to 10 about where we need to be, that?s moving from about zero to three as opposed to nine or ten,? he said.

The pontiff went to Brazil on his first visit overseas since he was elected in March.

The Pope said he had stayed away from the issue of gay marriage and also abortion on his week-long trip to Brazil because he wanted to stay positive.

Francis discussed a range of issues during the press conference, admitting that the church had not done enough to develop ?the theology of women in the church.?

He said that the church had spoken on the issue of women priests and expressed itself clearly on the issue of abortion, but he added that important female biblical figures had been overlooked.

"Mary is more important than the apostles," he said. "One must think about women in the church. We have not done enough theology on this."

History's first Latin American pope said he was "pretty tired" but with a happy heart after his first overseas trip.

He said he was amazed at the number of people who turned out to see him in Brazil, especially the three million who jammed Copacabana Beach for Sunday's Mass.

He added that he was unconcerned by the tumultuous start to the trip that included the discovery of a bomb at a shrine he visited and the mob scene that took place when his driver inadvertently made wrong turn.

"There's always the danger of a crazy person, but there is also the Lord," he said. "This being close is good for everyone."

N. Korea stages anniversary parade

North Korea has staged a military parade to mark the 60th anniversary of the Korean War ceasefire. Source: AAP

THE North Korean capital Pyongyang has put its military hardware on show at a major parade to mark the 60th anniversary of the Korean War ceasefire, presided over by leader Kim Jong-Un.

Thousands of troops and spectators roared "Protect Kim Jong-Un with our lives" when the youthful leader appeared on the podium, flanked by top party and military leaders at the sprawling Kim Il-Sung square, state TV showed.

The parade, to mark the 60th anniversary of the Korean War ceasefire on July 27, 1953, will be closely watched for any evidence that the North has made tangible progress in its ballistic missile programme.

The last mass military parade in the North Korean capital was held on April 15 last year for the birth centenary of the North's founder leader Kim Il-Sung.

Since then, the North successfully launched a long-range rocket in December and conducted its third nuclear test in February.

Both events drew UN sanctions and triggered a surge in military tensions on the Korean peninsula that lasted for several months.

At Saturday's parade, Kim and his troops saluted as the blue, white and red national flag and the yellow and red flag of the ruling Workers' Party were raised.

"Let's fight, fight, fight ... for our republic!" soldiers chanted.

The parade was conducted with two large portraits of Kim's father and grandfather hung on the front side of the gigantic Grand People's Study Hall, situated on the square.

Choe Ryong-Hae, the country's highest military official, said in a speech that "the proud and victorious history" created by the North's founder Kim Il-Sung and his son Kim Jong-Il had passed down to "our great general Kim Jong-Un" in a third generation succession.

"The respected leader Kim Jong-Un has upgraded our military and taken the solidarity among our people to a whole new level", Choe said.

"Peaceful environment is more important than anything else for our country that strives to achieve economic construction and improvement of the lives of people".

He said, however, North Korea has to be ready for war if it wants peace.

"All servicemen and people should ... strengthen our defence and be firmly prepared to fend off any attacks from the outside."

The parade last April witnessed the first major public speech by Kim Jong-Un since coming to power following his father Kim Jong-Il's death in December 2011.

He was widely expected to make a similar address on Saturday.

China's Vice President Li Yuanchao, heading the Chinese delegation invited for the anniversary celebrations, joined Kim on the podium.

China's relationship with North Korea - famously described by Mao Zedong as being as close as "lips and teeth" - was forged in the 1950-53 Korean war which China entered to prevent the North's total defeat.

But it has weakened significantly over the years, as China's economic transformation has distanced it from the ideological rigidity of the dynastic Kim regime across the border.

In line with UN sanctions, Beijing has moved to restrict Pyongyang's financial operations in China which the international community says are the major conduit for funding its nuclear weapons programme.

DNP 12K gaming brings frame rates and resolution to OMFGlevels

Think your gaming rig's impressive because it can run Metro: Last Light with maxed out settings at 60FPS? Well, Microsoft rounded up a trio of Sharp PN-K321 32-inch 4K monitors and wired them to a Windows 8 PC stuffed with three ASUS 7970 GPUs. The $17,000 experiment proved two things: Such tech is outside our price-range, and it takes a huge amount of support to get it working. For instance, before AMD wrote custom drivers to make Eyefinity and multi-stream transport play nicely together, the framerate was a meager 8FPS. It's worth noting that even after all that, demos only lasted a few minutes before the computer's power supply would conk out -- but maybe the kinks will be fixed in time for us to play Battlefield Bad Company 5 on it.

Chinese toddler critically ill after parking row attack

BEIJING: A two-year-old Chinese girl was in critical condition Thursday after being thrown to the ground by a man in a row with her mother over parking, a hospital and state media said.

The man, identified only by his surname Han, wanted to park by a bus stop in Beijing, the Beijing Times said, citing a witness.

But the woman pedestrian would not move out of his way as she was checking on her daughter at the time.

Han, in his 40s, emerged from his Hyundai Sonata and hit the woman before taking the toddler out of her pram, holding her up and throwing her "forcefully" to the ground, said the witness, a street stall owner surnamed Zhou.

"The baby made no noises after being dropped, not even a cry of pain," the newspaper quoted Zhou as saying.

Another man came out of the car and also beat the mother before the pair drove away, it added.

The mother rushed the girl to a nearby medical facility and the report said she died while being transferred to Beijing Tiantan Hospital.

But that hospital indicated to AFP that the toddler remained under treatment.

"She is still alive," said a hospital official, declining to be named or to provide further details.

The Legal Daily said the girl remained in critical condition, adding she had stopped breathing at one point and was being kept alive by a respirator.

Police found Han, who was released from prison this year after serving a sentence for theft, in a hot spring bathhouse on Wednesday and detained him, said the report.

He could be charged with serious assault if the girl survives, the Legal Daily cited lawyers as saying, making him eligible for a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison.

A death sentence could be handed down if she dies and he is charged with murder, according to other Chinese reports.

How big can Apple go? 13-inch iPad may be on the way

iPad

Apple's current iPad lineup

Apple

Apple's current iPad lineup could get a new 13-in. big brother.

Your next iPhone or iPad may be noticeably bigger than the device you?re carrying around today. Apple is reportedly testing a whopping 13-inch display for the iPad and larger iPhone displays, according to officials at the company?s suppliers.

Over the past few months, Apple has allegedly asked for prototypes of an iPhone with a display larger than four inches and a screen design for a tablet just under 13 inches, The Wall Street Journal reported. If Apple does decide to launch a bigger iPad, we may see this device as soon as the first half of 2014, according to Korean news source ET News.

This follows reports from last month that suggested Apple was experimenting with 4.7 and 5.7-inch screens for its future iPhones, although the company (as per usual) has not confirmed any plans for its upcoming products.

MORE: 25 Best iPad Apps

There?s no telling if these purported large-screened iPhones and iPads will ever make it to the market, but these reports suggest Apple is brainstorming new ways to appeal to consumers and snag the top smartphone spot from Samsung. While Apple is still the industry leader when it comes to tablet sales, Samsung claimed 33.1 percent of the smartphone market in the first quarter of 2013, while Apple only accounted for 17.9 percent of handset sales during the same period, according to Strategy Analytics.

The Wall Street Journal?s sources also suggest that Apple plans to refresh its 9.7-inch iPad with in-cell touch technology to create a thinner, sleeker design. Apple is currently ramping up production for this alleged iPad model just as suppliers have begun mass production on components for the new iPhone as well.

The upcoming iPhone that is expected to launch during the second half of this year will have the same screen size and resolution as the current iPhone 5, the newspaper reports. At the same time, Apple is working with manufacturing partners in Asia to create a less-expensive non-metal iPhone that will come in multiple color options.

Gold seen in neutron star collision debris

Material ejected in gamma-ray bursts may be source of heavy elements

By Erin Wayman

Gold explosion

New observations suggest that colliding neutron stars (shown in this artist's conception) produce short gamma-ray bursts. Such collisions also eject material that may be the source of the universe's gold and other heavy elements.

Credit: Dana Berry/SkyWorks Digital, Inc.

Dead stars make good alchemists.

Images snapped by the Hubble Space Telescope suggest that gold may have been generated by a violent neutron star collision that also yielded lead, platinum, uranium and other heavy elements.

The stellar smashup was detected on June 3, when NASA?s Swift satellite observed a gamma-ray burst 3.9 billion light-years away. Astrophysicists believe that a crash between two neutron stars, the dense, neutron-rich cores left over after massive stars explode, released the 0.2-second flash of energy.

Images snapped by the Hubble Space Telescope nine days later saw evidence for a bounty of heavy elements amounting to about 1 percent of the sun?s mass and including several moon masses of gold, says Edo Berger of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics in Cambridge, Mass. Given the amount of gold and the fact that these collisions probably happen once every 10,000 or 100,000 years in any given galaxy, such crashes could account for all of the gold in the universe, he says.

Berger?s team posted its findings June 17 on arxiv.org.

The idea that neutron star collisions create heavy elements was suggested in the 1970s by James Lattimer, now at Stony Brook University in New York, and colleagues. Back then, Lattimer says, there were few observations of neutron stars and computers were slow. So, Lattimer says, ?the calculations were fairly crude, and I?m not sure people believed the model that much.?

Instead, most astrophysicists thought elements heavier than iron ? those that don?t form via fusion within a star ? resulted from massive stars collapsing in supernovas. But computer simulations have had a tough time showing that this is possible, Lattimer says.

Although Lattimer says it?s ?comforting? that the findings fit with the neutron star theory, he notes the results are ?still fairly speculative.? The Hubble images show a glow of infrared light that Berger?s team says is characteristic of radiation emitted by the radioactive decay of heavy elements. Yet the team can?t rule out that the light was produced by the gamma-ray burst itself, Lattimer says.

Upcoming missions such as the Advanced Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory will make it easier to find short gamma-ray bursts and may confirm whether they are triggered by neutron stars, says astrophysicist Neil Gehrels of NASA?s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md.

And new telescopes such as the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope that monitor larger swaths of sky will make it easier to distinguish between a gamma-ray burst?s afterglow and shine coming from heavy elements. Finding signs of heavy elements, which require a lot of neutrons, in association with short gamma-ray bursts is the best evidence yet that neutron star collisions make heavy elements.

Here Comes Another Obama ?Pivot to Jobs?

My fellow Americans, we?re very lucky. The man who has been president going on five years now believes that Washington isn?t paying sufficient attention to the economy. So he?s going to give a bunch of speeches about it! Isn?t it always nice to hear about the economy from a man whose only connection with one is to wreck it?

The first of the series of speeches is set to come Wednesday at Knox College in Galesburg, Ill., where Obama delivered an economic speech shortly after he was elected a U.S. senator in 2005. He?ll then travel to the?University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg, Mo., to deliver remarks later that day.

In a blog post that was emailed out to those subscribed to the White House listserv, White House senior advisor Dan Pfeiffer billed it as a speech ?you?re going to want to watch.?

?The President thinks Washington has largely taken its eye off the ball on the most important issue facing the country,? Pfeiffer said.

?Instead of talking about how to help the middle class, too many in Congress are trying to score political points, refight old battles, and trump up phony scandals. And in a couple of months, we will face some more critical budget deadlines that require Congressional action, not showdowns that only serve to harm families and businesses ? and the President wants to talk about the issues that should be at the core of that debate.?

The ?refight old battles? line is a slap at Republicans who have tried in vain to repeal the job-killer known as Obamacare. He started road testing that line last week when he surrounded himself with human props and gave a speech designed to knock the IRS hearing off newscasts and out of most punditry. These news speeches, then, will be about protecting the ground Obama has gained, and about distracting away from the Democrats? internal fault line on that law and from the Obama scandals.

That ground does need protecting. Thirty-five Democrats voted with the Republicans to delay the Obamacare employer mandate last week. Some of those then turned around and voted with the rest of the Democrats against delaying the individual mandate, putting the Democrats on the record valuing corporations above people. They are the party that supports billion dollar corporation Planned Parenthood in lockstep, though, which takes valuing corporations over people to an almost absurdly comedic level.

This latest ?pivot to jobs? will further a great lie, which is that the Democrats? vision of immigration reform will help jump start the economy. What it?s actually likely to do if it passes is legalize millions of workers at the lower levels of our economy, who will compete with the Americans and legal immigrants who are already here, while further straining government services.

Military Sexual Assault Bill Would Reassign Authority

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y., is fighting for her bill to curb sexual assaults in the military. Her measure would give independent military prosecutors, rather than commanders, the power to decide which cases should be tried in military court.

Military leaders fiercely oppose moving that authority outside the chain of command, arguing that commanders are responsible for the health and welfare of their soldiers. Removing their authority would undermine their ability to lead, they say.

Gillibrand says commanders are not experts on serious assaults and are unable to prevent retaliation against victims who report crimes.

"Frankly, they've failed up until now to keep the command climate free of assault, rape and retaliation," she says.

Gillibrand's bill, which includes murder along with rape and sexual assault, was rejected by the Senate Armed Services Committee, but has gained bipartisan backing from senators outside the committee, including Republicans Rand Paul of Kentucky and Ted Cruz of Texas. She intends to bring the bill to the Senate floor, where members outside the committee have fewer ties to military.

"We created this framework because, frankly, that's what our allies have done in the past," Gillibrand told weekends on All Things Considered host Jacki Lyden.

"The UK, Israel, Australia, Canada, Germany, all have removed serious crimes outside of the chain of command to create an objective military justice system that doesn't have command influence affecting the outcome."

Interview Highlights

On commanders' responsibilities

"Only the commanders are responsible for ensuring good order and discipline and they have to set a command climate where, first of all, these rapes and assaults aren't taking place. But if they do take place, [commanders can make sure] that there is room for reporting, that people feel comfortable, that justice can be done and to assure that there is no retaliation.

"What we are finding, though, is that commanders in charge today are not assuring that for victims. Sixty-two percent of victims who have reported their crimes report that they were retaliated against for reporting."

How to define assault

"For the most part, these are violent crimes. There's no confusion. Of the 3,300 cases that were actually reported, 70 percent were violent assaults and violent rapes, criminal conduct that is based on power and domination. These are not dates that have gone badly, these are not questions of whether she said yes, then no, then yes, then no. This is not an issue of hormones, as some of my colleagues have mentioned. These are violent crimes perpetrated by, often, predators who are recidivists, and these are crimes of domination and violence."

What's at stake in this uphill battle?

"At the end of the day, commanders aren't objective. Commanders may have different training, different perspectives. They may or may not want women in the armed forces. They may not understand what sexual assault is, or what constitutes rape. They may not agree, what is a rape or not a rape. But that shouldn't be their judgment. It should be an objective, trained prosecutor who makes the decision about whether or not there is evidence to prosecute these crimes. That hopefully will instill more confidence in the system, that justice can be possible."

Muffins might just be the greatest breakfast food ever invented. You can pop the top, you can eat the whole thing in three bites (and then have another), and you can take them to go. It's hard to find a wrong way to eat a muffin.?

This spring a new cookbook arrived on the desk of Stir It Up!, "Flour, Too" by Joanne Chang. Here in Boston, we're big fans of Ms. Chang and her chain of bakeries, Flour, where muffins aren't the only breakfast stars (think brioche, croissants, homemade pop tarts, and out-of-this-world sticky buns). Ms. Chang's first cookbook "Flour,"?which highlights her baked goods,?left our hands itching for some dough. "Flour, Too" is organized more like a traditional cookbook with sections for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and party ideas.?

The breakfast section of "Flour, Too" is divided into sweet and savory chapters, and has two versatile muffin recipes. We tested Chang's vegan vanilla mixed-berry muffins and found the recipe simple and unfussy, and the muffins moist, dense, and packed with fruit. Substituting regular milk for soy milk and skipping butter or eggs makes this recipe vegan, but doesn't compromise the taste or texture. They may just be the perfect muffins. (Try them yourself by following the recipe below.)

But we are wondering: Is it possible that somewhere out yonder an even greater muffin recipe is waiting to be discovered and shared with the world? So we turn to you, dear readers, for your best homemade muffin recipes. Follow our guidelines to submit your recipe. Stir It Up! will narrow down submissions to three finalists, and the folks here in CSMonitor.com newsroom will vote on the winner. The winning recipe will be featured on Stir It Up!, and the baker will receive a copy of "Flour, Too" signed by chef-author Joanne Change.

The muffin mix-off contest: How to enter

Send your favorite homemade muffin recipe to food@csps.com. Please include an ingredient list, step-by-step numbered instructions, along with your name, hometown, and e-mail address. Vegan vanilla-mixed berry muffins
Reprinted with permission from "Flour, Too," by Joanne Chang?

2-2/3 cups all-purpose flour

2 teaspoons baking soda

1 teaspoon kosher salt

1 cup granulated sugar

3/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons vegetable oil, such as canola

1-1/3 cups plain soy milk

2 tablespoons distilled white or cider vinegar

1 tablespoon vanilla extract

1 cup fresh or frozen raspberries

1 cup fresh or frozen blueberries

1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F, and place a rack in the center of the oven. Line the cups of the muffin tin with paper liners or generously oil and flour them.

2. In a medium bowl, combine the flour, baking soda, salt, and 3/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons of the sugar and stir until well mixed. In a separate bowl, whisk together the vegetable oil, soy milk, vinegar, and vanilla. Make a well in the dry ingredients and pour the wet ingredients into the middle of the well. Stir with a rubber spatula until well mixed. Add the raspberries and blueberries and mix until the fruit is evenly distributed.

3. Spoon an equal amount of batter into each prepared muffin cup. Sprinkle the tops with the remaining 2 tablespoons sugar.

4. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes, or until the muffins are pale gold and the tops spring back when pressed gently in the middle. Let cool in the tin on a wire rack before popping them out. The muffins taste best on the day they are baked, but any uneaten muffins can be stored in a covered container at room temperature for 2 or 3 days. For the best results, refresh them in a 300 degree F oven for 4 to 5 minutes.?

So long, 'Optimus' ? LG G2 up next

LG G2

LG on occasion has announced products before actually announcing the products, and the trend continues today with the "LG G2." This should be (is) the successor to the Optimus G, and should (will) get our hands on it in a few weeks in New York City. It also marks the end of the "Optimus" name for LG's flagship devices.

Google's translation points to "a user-friendly and innovative new mobile experience" — which can mean whatever the hell LG wants to it, but consider our interest piqued. LG has already said to expect the Snapdragon 800 SoC and have a theoretical speed of 150 Mbps — LTE-A. But most of us won't see that anytime soon.

In addition to dropping the "Optimus" name from this line, LG also said its 4:3 aspect ratio Optimus Vu will now just be called "Vu." So there's that.

See you in NYC next month.

Inner speech speaks volumes about the brain

[unable to retrieve full-text content]Whether you're reading the paper or thinking through your schedule for the day, chances are that you're hearing yourself speak even if you're not saying words out loud. This internal speech -- the monologue you "hear" inside your head -- is a ubiquitous but largely unexamined phenomenon. A new study published in Psychological Science looks at a possible brain mechanism that could explain how we hear this inner voice in the absence of actual sound.
