(AP) ? Mike Tannenbaum pulled out a letter as he stood in front of the New York Jets players for one last time.

It was a farewell address to the group of men he signed, traded for or drafted over the last seven years as the team's general manager. And he choked back tears as he read it.

"It was really heartfelt," defensive end Mike DeVito said Monday. "I know Mike, and he'll bounce back."

The Jets fired Tannenbaum after a dismal 6-10 season, but owner Woody Johnson announced that Rex Ryan will be back for a fifth season as the team's coach.

"I believe that he has the passion, the talent, and the drive to successfully lead our team," Johnson said of Ryan in a statement.

The futures of both Tannenbaum and Ryan were unclear after a 28-9 loss to Buffalo on Sunday, a miserable finish to the team's first losing season in Ryan's four seasons as coach. While it appeared Tannenbaum was a likely gone, it was believed Ryan might also be on shaky ground.

Ryan's scheduled news conference with the media Monday afternoon was postponed amid speculation that there could be several changes on the coaching staff. Offensive coordinator Tony Sparano is expected to be fired after one season, while defensive coordinator Mike Pettine's status is uncertain after he turned down a contract extension earlier in the year. Special teams coordinator Mike Westhoff retired after Sunday's game.

Johnson started shaking things up early by parting ways with Tannenbaum, who had been with the organization since 1997. Johnson said he has consulted with several "football executives" and also hired a search firm to help aid in finding a new GM.

"My goal every year as owner is to build a team that wins consistently," Johnson said. "This year, we failed to achieve that goal. Like all Jets fans, I am disappointed with this year's results. However, I am confident that this change will best position our team for greater success going forward."

The Jets were a team in turmoil from the moment they acquired quarterback Tim Tebow in a trade with Denver last March. The move was made by Tannenbaum and highly criticized by fans and media ? and failed in just about every way.

Tebow was brought in as a backup for Mark Sanchez and expected to play a key role in certain offensive schemes. He played sparingly, and spent several weeks out of the lineup with injured ribs.

Meanwhile, Sanchez was having a poor season, the Jets kept losing and Tebow never got a chance to be the No. 1 quarterback.

"I underachieved and didn't play the way I'm capable of playing," Sanchez said. "I want another crack at this thing."

Tebow's time with the Jets began with a splashy news conference, but his one and likely only season ended with the popular backup going out quietly as he wasn't available to the media as the players cleared out their lockers.

Tannenbaum's tenure as the Jets' GM included two trips to the AFC championship game. He had two years left on his contract, but Johnson made the change after the Jets failed to make the playoffs for a second year in a row.

Tannenbaum was hired as the team's director of player contract negotiations in 1997, and served in various other roles before becoming general manager and replacing Terry Bradway in 2006.

With a knack for navigating the NFL's salary cap, Tannenbaum was never afraid to make splashy signings or trades ? Tebow, Brett Favre, LaDainian Tomlinson, Santonio Holmes and Plaxico Burress, to name a few. He also made his mark on draft day, bringing in some of the team's best players such as Darrelle Revis, Nick Mangold, D'Brickashaw Ferguson and David Harris. But Tannenbaum had more misses than hits in recent drafts, with Vernon Gholston, Vladimir Ducasse and even Sanchez high-round picks that didn't perform as expected.

The trade for Tebow was perhaps the biggest mistake. By acquiring Tebow last March, the Jets brought in a player with immense popularity to provide a spark to the offense ? just a matter of days after giving Sanchez a contract extension that included $8.25 million in guarantees for next season.

Tebow hardly saw the field, and when he did, he wasn't very effective. His lack of use was a season-long story line that provided an unnecessary distraction to a team in need of locker room stability after in-fighting derailed its 2011 season.

Many fans and media argued that rather than trade for Tebow, Tannenbaum could have addressed some of the Jets' more-pressing needs, such as the offensive line, wide receiver and depth on defense.

The next general manager will face an unstable salary cap situation, along with a dozen players scheduled to become unrestricted free agents, including starters Dustin Keller, LaRon Landry, Yeremiah Bell, Shonn Greene and Brandon Moore.

Meanwhile, that new GM will also have to work with Ryan, who has two years remaining on his contract. He is 34-30 in four seasons and 4-2 in the postseason, including the consecutive trips to the AFC championship game in 2009 and 2010. But he hasn't been able to parlay that early success into the franchise's first Super Bowl trip since 1969 ? something he guaranteed at his introductory news conference in 2009.

Notorious poacher now leads a fight to save Africa's elephants

ddd

Sorry sight ? remains of an elephant killed by poachers.

ARCHERS POST, Kenya: Julius Lokinyi was one of the most notorious poachers in this part of Kenya, accused of single-handedly killing as many as 100 elephants and selling the tusks by the side of the road in the middle of the night.

But after being hounded by his village elders, he made a remarkable transformation. Lokinyi stopped poaching and joined a grassroots squad of rangers - essentially a conservation militia - to protect the wildlife he once slaughtered.

Now he gets up at dawn, slurps a cup of sugary tea, tightens his combat boots and marches off with other villagers, some of whom had never picked up a gun before, to fight poachers. From Tanzania to Cameroon, tens of thousands of elephants are poached each year, more than at any time in decades, because of Asia's growing demand for ivory.

Scientists say at this rate African elephants could soon go the way of the wild American bison.

But in this stretch of northern Kenya destitute villagers have seized upon an unconventional solution that, if replicated elsewhere, could be the key to saving thousands of elephants across the continent, conservationists say.

In a growing number of communities people are banding together, grabbing shotguns and assault rifles and risking their lives to confront heavily armed poaching gangs.

It is not unusual for a visitor to pay $US700 ($670) a night to sleep in a tent and absorb the sights, sounds and musky smells of big game. Much of the money is contractually bound to go directly to impoverished local villages, which use it for everything from buying water pumps to sending their children to college.

Surprisingly, many jobs in the safari industry can pay as much as poaching.

Though the ivory trade may seem lucrative, it is often like the Somali pirate business model, with the entry-level hijacker getting just a minuscule cut of the million-dollar rewards. While 500 grams of ivory can fetch $US1000 on the streets of Beijing, Lokinyi, despite his long poaching career, was broke.

Villagers are also turning against poachers because the illegal wildlife trade fuels crime, corruption, instability and fighting between communities.

''This isn't just about animals,'' said Paul Elkan, a director at the Wildlife Conservation Society, who is trying to set up community ranger squads in South Sudan modelled on the Kenyan template. ''It's about security, conflict reconciliation, even nation building.''

The US government is throwing its weight behind such community conservation efforts, contributing more than $US4 million to Kenya. But there are obvious risks.

In Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo and other African countries home-grown militias initially mustered to protect communities have often turned into predators themselves.

''It's pretty hopeless to stop elephant poaching in Africa unless you get local buy-in,'' said Iain Douglas-Hamilton, who runs Save the Elephants.

''But implementing this is a different matter. If you don't do it carefully, you'll have people killing each other.''

Lokinyi and the other scouts said they had killed several poachers and had the pictures to prove it. They were unconcerned about taking a human life to protect an elephant's.

It is difficult to measure the success of the community ranger programs, but Kenya's poaching levels have declined drastically from the slaughter days of the 1970s and '80s, when thousands of elephants were poached each year.

This year, Kenyan authorities said, about 350 elephants have been poached, triple the number in 2008 - but those are just the confirmed kills, and many carcasses are never discovered.

These days Lokinyi sports his crisp camouflage fatigues with pride and patrols the same scratchy kilometres of thorn bush he used to stalk, now using his bushcraft to predict where the poachers will strike next. He went through a redemption ritual earlier in the year during which goats were slaughtered and fat smeared over his body. He moved into a new home and even acquired new ceremonial parents, elders who took him in. ''I've done many bad things,'' Lokinyi said.

''But now I am clean.''

Did This Elephant Actually Eat This Poor Tourist's iPhone?

Imagine you're out sight-seeing in Thailand. Whoa! Elephants! Better catch some video with your iPhone. Really hold it out there for a good shot when, haha, he's touching it with his trunk! Aaaand it's gone. Sure, it'd be equal parts hilarious and a bummer if it actually happened, and while that's what this video shows, it's probably (unfortunately) bogus. More »

Arab officials visit cash-strapped Palestinian territory

RAMALLAH, West Bank (Reuters) - Top Arab officials paid a rare visit to the Israeli-occupied West Bank on Saturday to discuss a Palestinian financial crisis that President Mahmoud Abbas hopes will be eased by Arab donations.

Arab League Chief Nabil Elaraby and Egyptian Foreign Minister Mohamed Kamel Amr congratulated the Palestinians on a successful United Nations status upgrade last month, but stopped short of promising the badly-needed funds.

"Palestine is in need of material and political support," Elaraby told a news conference in the Palestinians' de facto capital of Ramallah.

"Arab countries agreed at their Baghdad summit (in March) for an Arab safety net of $100 million dollars each month, but unfortunately none of this has been achieved yet," he said.

Palestinian were cheered by a strong majority in the United Nations recognizing them as an "observer state" on November 29 but have struggled to get Arab support to make up $100 million in shortfalls left by Israeli sanctions following the U.N. move.

Elaraby is the first Arab League Chief to visit Ramallah, but he and other prominent Arab and Islamic leaders, including the Egyptian prime minister, met Abbas's Palestinian Hamas rivals in Gaza during their brief war with Israel last month.

QATARI LEADER

Hamas, which split from the West Bank after it seized control of the Gaza Strip in 2007, also won a diplomatic coup by receiving Emir Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani, ruler of the oil-rich Gulf state of Qatar, who pledged $400 million in aid for the impoverished territory in October.

The emir postponed a visit to Ramallah he had announced this month, disappointing West Bank officials who had hoped he would arrive bearing gifts of cash.

The Gaza visits broke years of diplomatic quarantine for the Islamist Hamas group, which refuses to recognize Israel or relinquish its arms, and increased the isolation of the dovish, Western-backed Ramallah government.

West Bank officials have watched with worry as uprisings in the Arab world divert attention from their diplomatic strategy, which has failed to achieve an independent Palestinian state.

Hamas militants, by contrast, have been heartened as fellow-Islamists rise to power in Egypt and elsewhere.

Abbas has accused Israel of "piracy" after it withheld customs revenues it collects on the Palestinians' behalf, citing months of utilities bills Ramallah owes Israeli companies.

The financial crisis has forced the Palestinian Authority to delay salary payments to West Bank employees, who have gone on strike in protest. Abbas has responded by saying he might give up power and compel Israel to take on the Palestinians' affairs.

"Sit in the chair here instead of me, take the keys, and you will be responsible for the Palestinian Authority," Abbas warned Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, in an interview with the Israeli Haaretz newspaper this week.

"I won't do anything as long as there are diplomatic negotiations," he said. "But if the stalemate continues...what's left for us to do?"

Progress watch 2012: Smart phones, jobs returning to America, and war crimes trials

The often-slow arc of good news may not make headlines. But 2012 brought its quiet share: from extreme poverty dropping by half since 1990 to a robot with the bulky profile of an NFL player that may have a role in bringing jobs back to the US.

By Jina Moore,?Correspondent / December 30, 2012

This is the cover story in the Dec. 31/Jan. 7, 2013 double issue of The Christian Science MonitorWeekly.

Good news?is hard to find. That's partly because, no matter what the topic, there's so much distracting bad news: ongoing violence in Syria, America's allegedly imminent fiscal demise, the National Hockey League lockout. From the front page to the sports page, so little looks good.

It isn't just the cacophony of naysaying and fear that crowds out good news. It's also the nature of progress itself: Good news happens slowly. The American storytelling ethos loves narratives of overnight success, but real change isn't usually so sudden. Earlier this year, the World Bank announced that the number of people living on less than $1.25 a day ? what policy wonks call "extreme poverty" ? had dropped by half since 1990. That study might have been the biggest bit of good news to go overlooked this year, but consider this: Global extreme poverty was actually halved in 2010 ? it took two years even to see that progress had happened.

Other highlights, too, have been subject to the long arc of incremental change. Nearly 90 percent of people globally have access to clean water, according to the World Health Organization. In Mexico, homicide rates ? driven to outrageous levels in the drug wars ? are down for the first time in six years.

In The Hague, two international war criminals were found guilty in landmark rulings: the International Criminal Court convicted Thomas Lubanga, a Congolese rebel, of recruiting child soldiers. The conviction, after a two-year trial, was a first for the ICC, established a decade ago. The verdict "was the culmination of decades of hope that accountability for the most serious crimes would be achieved," says James Goldston, founding director of the Open Society Justice Initiative. "It took 10 years, but this conviction [is] an enormous accomplishment and a major step forward for international justice."

In a long-awaited verdict from a different court, the Special Court for Sierra Leone, former Liberian President Charles Taylor was convicted of war crimes. He is effectively the first former head of state to be convicted of war crimes. (The formal distinction goes to Karl D?nitz, who served as president of Germany for the 23 days between Hitler's suicide and the dissolution of the government after Germany's surrender in World War II.)

Junior Dos Santos vs. Cain Velasquez: The Rematch Will Outdo the First Fight

The rematch between Junior dos Santos and Cain Velasquez will go down in the main event of UFC 155.? It may be one of the most talked-about rematches in recent memory, given how their first meeting ended.

Velasquez and dos Santos met one another on the first-ever UFC card on the Fox network in Nov. of 2011. After a 30-minute pre-match lead-in, fans were hoping for an epic battle between two of the best heavyweights on the planet.

Instead, the end came swiftly, just 64 seconds into the contest.

Velasquez didn't quite look like himself, and the knee injury he had coming in likely played some part in his performance. But he also looked very tentative as well, something we hadn't seen from a guy who likes to push the pace, given his conditioning advantage over most heavyweights.

Dos Santos, to his own credit, fought with a damaged knee as well. He was able to land an overhand right to end the fight and capitalize on the opening for the finish.

Now both men will meet one another Saturday night to decide the future of the heavyweight division. Will the rematch play out in similar fashion?

Luckily, there's hope for a better fight the second time around.

For one, just as in team sports, it's very hard to dominate an opponent a second time. Both men have learned what to do and what not to do coming into the rematch. Training for months on end for the same opponent no doubt makes each man an expert on the other.

Another reason the rematch should outdo the first is Velasquez.

The former champion seems to have a different mindset coming into the rematch. Listening to him in the pre-fight interviews, Velasquez seems to realize he needs to be more aggressive and not wait for the champion to make the first move. As a popular saying in professional wrestling goes, "The challenger needs to beat the champion, a champion doesn't need to beat his challenger."

Velasquez knows he needs to come out and take the title from dos Santos, which should lead to some explosive striking exchanges. Or even better, Velasquez may get a takedown and make the champion fight off his back, something we've yet to see from dos Santos thus far in his UFC career.

With so many variables coming in, the rematch is bound to create just as much?if not more?anticipation for how the fight will play out. And, of course, greater anticipation creates greater interest in the fight.

It's very rare that a rematch ends in similar fashion as the first meeting, but given JDS' punching power, that could be a real possibility. Still, Velasquez seems to be focused on getting his belt back and won't go down without a fight this time.

(AP) ? Chuck Pagano walked onto the field Sunday waving to the fans and hugging his wife.

He left the field hugging everybody in sight ? assistant coaches, Colts players, even Texans players and coaches ? before dancing in the locker room.

Why not?

Andrew Luck threw for two TDs, Vick Ballard ran for another and Deji Karim scored on a 101-yard kickoff return to give the cancer-beating coach a 28-16 win over AFC South champ Houston in his return to the sideline.

Those who thought Pagano might take it easy in his first game back at the helm of the wild-card Colts since starting the first of three rounds of chemotherapy Sept. 26 were wrong.

Pagano spent the pregame warm-ups hugging friends such as offensive coordinator and former interim coach Bruce Arians, and Texans defensive coordinator Wade Phillips. During the game, he was the same old guy. Pagano took his customary linebacker stance, hands on bended knees, signaled touchdowns when the Colts scored, patted players on their helmets and gestured for flags to be thrown. He even sprinted a few times.

Fans gave Pagano a standing ovation after a 1-minute video was shown on the stadium's two Jumbotrons just before kickoff.

But Pagano's players wanted to welcome back another way: with a victory celebration. Indy (11-5) did everything it needed to get it Sunday, perhaps damaging the Texans' playoff seeding, too.

The Colts play at Baltimore in the wild-card round next weekend. The slumping Texans (12-4) have lost three of their last four and won't know their AFC seeing until after Denver and New England finish later Sunday.

Indy prevented J.J. Watt from getting any closer to Michael Strahan's NFL sacks record (22?). Watt finished the season with 20?.

Luck broke Peyton Manning's rookie record for completions and moved into third all-time among rookies with 22 TD passes. He finished 14 of 28 for 191 yards, giving him 339 completions this season.

Of course, the Colts gave Pagano a game ball, then watched him lead an impromptu dance in the locker room, including a do-si-do with team owner Jimmy Irsay.

It didn't take long for the Colts to assert themselves in this emotional environment ? or to swing the game when the Texans took their only lead. Shayne Graham made a 37-yard field goal with 5:22 left in the third quarter, but that lead lasted all of 12 seconds.

Karim fielded the ensuing kickoff 1 yard deep in the end zone, found a seam in the middle of the field and never slowed until he reached the opposite end zone to make it 21-16. Pagano patted him on the helmet after the longest kickoff return since the Colts moved to Indy in 1984.

Then, facing third-and-23 from the 30, Luck threw a perfect strike through a narrow window, hitting T.Y. Hilton in stride for a 70-yard TD to make it 28-16.

On a day the Texans mostly settled for field goals, that's all the Colts needed.

Luck masterfully led the Colts 75 yards in 13 plays on the game's opening possession, prompting Pagano to call for a defensive pass interference call on third-and-goal. Pagano also flung his arms into the air when Luck hooked up with Coby Fleener for a 1-yard score.

Graham made a 51-yard field goal late in the first quarter and 37-yarder early in the second.

But after Matt Schaub's underthrown pass was picked off by Vontae Davis and returned 26 yards to the Houston 39, Luck went back to work. He found Hilton for a 17-yard completion before Ballard plunged in from the 1 to make it 14-6.

Pagano was even on the minds of the Texans.

Houston opened the second half with its only touchdown when Arian Foster broke through a hole for a 13-yard TD run. Instead of doing his trademark bow, though, Foster ran through the end zone and tapped the (hash)Chuckstrong sign hanging on the wall. That made it 14-13.

Schaub finished 24 of 36 for 275 yards with two interceptions and no touchdowns. Foster ran 16 times for 96 yards.

South Florida's Collins injured in win against George Mason

By JOEY JOHNSTON | The Tampa Tribune

The University of South Florida Bulls nearly blew a late 13-point lead but hung on to defeat the George Mason Patriots 61-57 at the Sun Dome.

That wasn't Saturday night's biggest concern.

USF lost sophomore point guard Anthony Collins with 10:30 remaining when his head slammed into a defender's knee while they scrambled for a loose ball. Collins remained on the court for 10 minutes, moving only slightly. His head and neck were stabilized by EMS officials and he was carted away on a stretcher as the 4,856 fans provided a reassuring ovation.

Bulls coach Stan Heath said Collins, a preseason second-team All-Big East selection, suffered a neck injury and was taken to a Tampa hospital. Heath said Collins had sensation in "his extremities, his hands and feet." Collins' status was unknown for Wednesday night's game at Central Florida.

Also, USF junior Victor Rudd suffered a late-game concussion, leaving the Bulls with just five healthy scholarship players in the final minute (they came into the game minus Shaun Noriega and JaVontae Hawkins, plus Kore White was unavailable with a toe injury).

"I'm proud of the guys," said Heath, whose team improved to 8-3. "We hung in there."

Even without Collins, USF's alpha and omega.

"It was hard to see him down there (on the court)," said USF junior Martino Brock, who assumed much of the ball-handling duties following Collins' absence. "I pray that everything goes good with him. He's our point guard, our leader. He does so much for us."

Jawanza Poland led USF with 16 points and eight rebounds, including four free throws after the Patriots (7-5) had cut the Bulls' lead to 55-53 with 33 seconds remaining. USF struggled overall at the free-throw line (16-for-27), but went 10-for-10 in the final 1:57.

"I thought we closed well," Heath said.

Brock added 14 points for USF, while Musa Abdul-Aleem contributed 11, including a 3-for-4 night from 3-point range. Sherrod Wright had 22 points for George Mason.

Zach LeDay's free throw with 5:12 left gave USF its largest lead, 49-36, but George Mason went on a 17-6 run to make it excruciating down the stretch.

"George Mason is a good pressure defense team and we were without our best pressure-release guy (Collins)," Heath said. "We could've folded. That was a really physical game, but we did what we needed to do (at the critical moments)."

Toarlyn Fitzpatrick, USF's leading scorer (12.7), had just three points. Rudd, named national player of the week by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association, was limited to just six points on 2-for-9 shooting.

"I give the kid (Rudd) credit because he didn't put his head down," said Patriots coach Paul Hewitt. "Obviously, the injury (to Collins) looked pretty serious. I hope he's healthy for the rest of the season."

Physical adversity is nothing new for USF. Collins has been laboring with a calf injury. Rudd's status is now uncertain. Heath doesn't expect Noriega or Hawkins back for UCF. White is a possibility.

"We've just got to keep stepping up," Poland said.

Try Practicing These Great Self Improvement Tips Today! | Mind and ...

The concept of self improvement is based on a person improving themselves in all ways on a regular basis. You?ll have to build self-awareness, learn new things, and develop spiritually, all leading to the fulfillment of your personal goals. The aim of this article is to assist you with some ways to enhance your self improvement goals. Taking steps can help you find a better understanding of yourself.

Many people often have goals that are too broad, when they are trying to grow through personal development. Make sure to come up with a target goal for yourself. When you have specific goals set, you will find that you get results.

TIP! Getting out and living your life can really enhance your quest for personal development. You need to chose to actively participate in your life instead of being a spectator.

To achieve success, list personal development goals that are broken down into specifics. The more specific your goals, the easier it will be to chart a course from where you are now to where you want to be in the future. You can face each challenge and move on to the success you desire.

Read some good books about self improvement. The best personal development books can give you new ideas and advice that could change your life forever. Books on the topic of self improvement can be poorly written. To avoid this, make sure you read books that have been reviewed well.

TIP! You should try to become the best at what you do. The passions you have should always make you want to achieve greatness.

Go to the movies with a friend. You will be out and about but not have to socialize as much. You will also begin to get comfortable being around large groups of people.

Remove the disorder and chaos from your life. Bringing structure to your life will give you a great sense of accomplishment, and living a more organized life will boost your confidence. Additionally, it will remove the stress caused by living a disorganized life. Having everything in its own place instills a calming energy.

TIP! In order to have a lifestyle that you love, set goals that you are sure that you can accomplish. When you determine what your weaknesses are, you can address them properly and become a better you.

Perhaps you have set high goals for yourself and keep failing to attain them. If this is the case, it is a good idea to stop and think why. Compare your goals with the goals of others that you can research online. You may find that you are setting the bar too high, forgetting a critical step, or not allocating enough of your resources to solving the problem.

Are you having a hard time finding that special someone? Perhaps you should try the Internet. Four out of ten couples meet online these days. You never know, the person you are looking for could also be looking for someone! Free sites have advantages and disadvantages, but so do paid dating sites.

TIP! Start giving other people compliments. Resist the urge to focus on the negative and instead speak out in kindness to others and you will find yourself being kinder to yourself, as well.

You must monitor your progress whenever you undertake a personal development project. Take heed of the advice provided here so that you can determine how this should occur. When you monitor your progress with any task, you will surely begin to notice improvement.

Now you have some more information about development to use to your advantage. This is an excellent start, but don?t neglect additional research. Use your time wisely so you?re able to get the success you desire. Do more research and adapt the tips and strategies you come across so they are relevant to your projects.

A 5-foot-9 midfielder and defender, Meza tried out for representatives from Mexico two months ago in San Jose and was extended an invitation to tryouts on April 21.

Things are going well for Meza, her personal coach Hillel Rom said Thursday, noting Meza will travel with the team for a short tour of Japan next week. Meza will return to Watsonville on May 12.

"I think she's got a better shot at making this team than she did the last one," said Rom, referring to Meza's tryout with FC Gold Pride last year. "She's tall, taller than most girls in Mexico, she's strong, has a great shot and is a year older."

6 (Legal) Ways to 'Fix' Your Financial Statements and Pay Less Tax

The sun is setting on 2012 and your books don?t look quite the way you?d like. Maybe you have too much profit ? maybe not enough. You need financial statements that reflect reality, position you for?profits in the new year and perhaps even impress your banker or pay less tax. But how?

Fortunately, accounting rules allow flexibility: It may seem like walking a thin line but there are plenty of ways you can change your financial reporting to produce ?better looking? ? and truly more meaningful ? financial statements without ever straying into legal or ethical problems.

Let?s take a look at six situations when we have legitimate choices that significantly change our financial statements.

1.?Capitalizing Expenses

The most common way to increase a company?s apparent profitability is to shift expenses off of the P&L and onto the balance sheet. When a business makes a large purchase, it could decide the cost should be ?capitalized? ? meaning to create an asset rather than an expense. This spreads the cost across many periods (as depreciation) and increases short term profits.

There are times when capitalizing an expense is not only correct, but required.? Some costs, like leasehold improvements (building new walls in a rented office, for example), are correctly classified as an asset.? Other times, the rules are not so clear. A new phone system is clearly an asset, but how about the cost to install it and to train the staff??If the training is listed as ?free? on the contract, should we expense the value of training anyway?

The decision to capitalize expenses works both ways: increasing or decreasing expenses in one period, and increasing or decreasing assets and depreciation costs over the long term.?Capitalizing or expensing an item can be a strategic decision that impacts profits, taxes and other areas of business.

2. Time Shifting Income and Expenses

Accountants try to wrap up all the transactions in a single month or year and call that period ?closed?. But business transactions can?t be so neatly packaged. Sales and spending continue past the end of each month or year, so there is always a temptation to fudge the dates on some transactions and force them into prior or later periods.

There are some good, legitimate reasons to do this, including simply correcting quirks in the calendar.? A power bill for example, is a monthly expense.? If we do not receive the February power bill until March 1, that?s no reason to skip the expense in February.? Clearly, the February P&L should contain an expense for power, so adjusting the date on the bill is a reasonable and legitimate use of this technique.

For internal reporting ? that is, when financial statements are prepared for management and not used for tax or other external purposes ? time shifting can be an important way to smooth out revenue and expenses on periodic reports.? It can be difficult to manage a business when several large invoices land arbitrarily in one month, so assigning part or all of the expense to another month may help make sense of what is actually going on in the business.

3. Changing Reporting Periods

One month or year can show a loss, while the next shows an extreme profit.? That?s the nature of business.? In order to generate reports that show more consistency, managers may elect not to report on a strict calendar year but instead look at a more representative period, such as the last 12 months (sometimes called TTM ? trailing twelve months).? This is a respected way to characterize financial results, for example, in a fast-growing company, or toward the end of one period when the last period?s data would be out of date.

Some businesses have such variability in their monthly results that they skip monthly reports altogether and look only at quarterly results.? This makes it difficult to make real time decisions, but if the reporting is more accurate on a quarterly basis it could be a good move.

4. Revenue Recognition

Businesses with multi-month delivery cycles and big invoice values are expected ? even required ? ?to spread income out as it is earned, rather than showing it all in the month when an invoice was created. GAAP has some rules about this based on measuring the work actually completed during a period. Consult with a CFO or CPA about how to measure this!

5. Inventory Valuation

Inventory is one area where small changes in recording can have large impacts on the financial statements.? Old inventory can be ?written down? ? meaning it is devalued or discounted ? simply because it is old.? The thought is that last year?s models left in inventory are not worth as much as this year?s.? Writing down inventory is an accepted way to take an expense in the current period and adjust the cost of goods for future sales.

6. Inventory Expense Recognition

When a company sells a product from inventory, profit depends on how we calculate and recognize the cost of goods sold?(COGS).? Should we value it at the price we paid for the oldest part of it? Or the price we paid most recently for the newest pieces? Or at the price we will pay to replace it next week?

There are generally accepted rules for guiding this decision, and it is important to remain consistent.? Which method you choose ? and if you choose to change the method ? can have a substantial impact on profitability since it will shift the cost of goods.

Make the Data Useful

There are plenty of legitimate reasons for changing the way we record things on our books. The rules of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) provide enough flexibility to push and mold our financial statements into useful reports.

Note that I said ?useful reports?. ?I did not say tax or regulatory filings. If your business is submitting formal financial statements for legal or tax purposes, a thorough review from a knowledgeable CPA or tax attorney is always the right move.

In the meantime, remember that financial reports are meant to help you make better business decisions.? Financial statements that are knowingly false, twist reality beyond recognition, or are based on wants instead of facts, will not give you meaningful information.

Dedicated to your (Year End) profits, ?David

How many words to say? The perennial challenge in public speaking

Many speakers can?t work out how many words they can say in the time they?ve got. Whilst there is no substitute for practice, don?t bank on more than 140 words per minute.

An entrepreneur friend of mine was recently on a global trade tour. With a group of his fellow countrymen he was visiting a load of European countries to sell his great new idea. At each event each member of the group was supposed to stand up, give a two minute elevator pitch and sit down. Every single time, one guy would get up and speak for quarter of an hour, dominated the time available and no-one else got a look in. Needless to say he wasn?t the most popular delegate on the trip.

We?ve all been there. A speaker?waffles on for three times as long as anyone anticipates. Sometimes other people miss out on speaking, or they miss their train home. Always it tires the audience.?Over the last few years as an observer of public speaking I?ve seen a lot of speakers overrun. Occasionally a speaker keeps going on?because they like the sound of their own voice. Mostly, it?s borne out of lack of confidence in the speaker themselves.

The greatest fear of any novice public speaker is running out of material. Not having anything to say in front of audience. To be frozen, silent and exposed. As a consequence novice speakers try to pack more into their speeches than they can possibly hope to say in the time available. Experienced speakers do it too, when they?re in front of new audiences that make them nervous.

The answer of course is to plan to say less. But how much less? That?s the tricky part, because it will depend on a wide range of different things, including the density of the content (does the audience have a lot to take in?) and pauses you are inserting for dramatic effect, but here are some helpful tips I?ve picked up along the way.

Since we all?speak at different rates, so there?s no substitute for practice at home.

When performing in front of an audience, I find most speeches take 15% longer than they do with the mirror. That?s a combination of additional pauses for effect, laughter, and allowing the audience to take the content in.

If you don?t have time to practice, years of writing my own speeches and reading other people?s suggests most people can say around 140 words?a minute clearly, so that?s about 1,000 words in a seven minute speech. (Having said that, one of my favourite speaking blogs, six minutes, analysed a series of TED talks by leading figures and found the average speaking rate was 163 words per minute, with a range of 133-188. If you ask me, many of them would have been a lot better if they?d slowed down http://sixminutes.dlugan.com/speaking-rate/)

Finally, remember that when it comes to speaking, your audience are very unlikely to be more engaged with the subject than you are and the more enthusiastic the speaker the more they want to cram in. If you think it is about the right length, it is probably too long. If you think it is too long, it definitely is. No-one ever condemned a speaker with the words ?that presentation was too short?.

Happy speaking!

George

Former Expo Urbina out of prison and back on the baseball field in Venezuela

Former major league All-Star closer Ugueth Urbina is back in baseball after spending more than seven years in prison for attempted murder.

Urbina, who was released from prison last Sunday, took the field at University Stadium in Caracus in his native Venezuela on Friday.

He told reporters that he was looking forward to playing baseball again. He threw a bullpen session with the Caracus Lions of the Venezuelan Winter League.

?I?m excited to be here,? he said.

Urbina, 38, served about half of his 14-year sentence over a gun dispute in October 2005. He was arrested and jailed a month later. He was accused of attacking multiple men on his property, allegedly trying to set them on fire and going after at least one with a machete.

The incident ended an 11-year career in which Urbina, 38, twice made the All-Star team. He led the National League with 41 saves for the Montreal Expos in 1999.

In 583 career appearances, including 21 starts, Urbina went 44-49 with 237 saves and a 3.45 ERA.

Urbina said he hopes to make it back to the majors, but ?the first order of business is pitching in Venezuela.?

A model-free way to characterize polymodal ion channel gating

Dec. 27, 2012 ? Two studies in The Journal of General Physiology (JGP) help pave the way for a "shortcut" model-free approach to studying activation of "polymodal" ion channels -- channels that open in response to multiple stimuli. Transmembrane ion channels respond to various physiological stimuli to regulate numerous cellular functions.

Different classes of channels respond to different types of stimuli; some channels, for instance, respond to changes in membrane potential whereas others are activated by ligand binding. Polymodal channels integrate different cellular signals, enabling them to mediate a more precise and flexible physiological response. Understanding the mechanisms involved in polymodal channel activation has been a challenge, however, in part because of the complexity of the models required.

Now, two studies in the January issue of JGP use straightforward thermodynamically rigorous analysis to parse the free energy of polymodal voltage- and ligand-dependent ion channels. In one study, University of Wisconsin-Madison researchers Sandipan Chowdhury and Baron Chanda examine the BK channel -- a channel activated by both changes in membrane potential and calcium binding to an intracellular domain. In the second study, Daniel Sigg (dPET Professional Services) explores gating of polymodal ion channels in general. Specifically, the authors show how to use G-V (conductance-voltage), Q-V (charge-voltage) and conductance vs. ligand concentration measurements to extract the free energies of interaction of the modules of a polymodal channel that respond to these distinct modalities

This new approach opens the door for a model-independent way to studying ion channel gating, which could be useful both for constraining future atomic-scale models of channel gating, and in understanding the disruptions that result from disease causing genetic mutations.
