Pope: 'Who am I to judge' gay people?

While on a plane from Brazil to Rome, Pope Francis told journalists that gay people should not be marginalised, saying, "If a person is gay and seeks God and has good will, who am I to judge him?"

By Anne Thompson and Henry Austin, NBC News

Pope Francis on Monday said ?who am I to judge?? gay people as he discussed one of the most divisive issues affecting the Catholic Church. ?

Luca Zennaro / Pool via EPA

Pope Francis, who gave a press conference on his flight back from Brazil, said he had stayed away from the gay marriage debate on his trip because he wanted to stay positive.

?I have yet to find anyone who has a business card that says he is gay,? the pontiff said at a press conference in which he addressed the reports of a "gay lobby" within the Vatican.

?They say they exist. If someone is gay, who searches for the Lord and has goodwill, who am I to judge?? he added. "The Catechism of the Catholic Church explains this very well. It says they should not be marginalized because of this (orientation) but that they must be integrated into society."

However, Francis reaffirmed the Catholic Church's teaching that homosexual acts are a sin, Reuters reported..

He added that he thought lobbies of any kind -- including political ones -- were bad.

"The problem is not having this orientation. We must be brothers. The problem is lobbying by this orientation, or lobbies of greedy people, political lobbies, Masonic lobbies, so many lobbies. This is the worse problem," he said.?

The press conference, which lasted for an hour and 20 minutes, was held during the flight back from his week-long trip to Brazil. ?

The official position of the Catholic Church on the issue is that while homosexual desires or attractions are not in themselves sinful, the physical acts are. All priests take a vow of celibacy when they become members of the clergy.?

Father Thomas J. Reece, a senior analyst at the National Catholic Reporter, said he thought Francis meant that "if a person is a homosexual and that person is trying to live a good life, it?s not our place to judge them."

"This is very significant I think,? he said. ?I think that recently under Pope Benedict there was a move to say that homosexuals could not be priests, that if they were seminarians they should be thrown out," he said.

?I think that Pope Francis is saying something quite different here. Whether you?re a homosexual or a heterosexual the question is whether they can live a celibate life. Other things coming out of Rome were quite different, just a few years ago," he added.

Reece said it was not known whether there really was a "gay lobby" in the Vatican, but this is used to describe a group of homosexual priests who allegedly look out of each other and engage in sexual acts.

Pope's remarks seen as good step toward inclusion

Mark Dowd, a former Dominican friar in the U.K. who left the church partly because he fell in love with a former friar, said it was ?very welcome that at least he [Francis] engages with the subject.?

However Dowd, who become a freelance broadcaster specializing in religion, doubted the comments represented a significant shift in the church, saying they made ?a nice headline? but not much else.

?On a scale of zero to 10 about where we need to be, that?s moving from about zero to three as opposed to nine or ten,? he said.

Felipe Dana / AP

The pontiff went to Brazil on his first visit overseas since he was elected in March.

The Pope said he had stayed away from the issue of gay marriage and also abortion on his week-long trip to Brazil because he wanted to stay positive.

Francis discussed a range of issues during the press conference, admitting that the church had not done enough to develop ?the theology of women in the church.?

He said that the church had spoken on the issue of women priests and expressed itself clearly on the issue of abortion, but he added that important female biblical figures had been overlooked.

"Mary is more important than the apostles," he said. "One must think about women in the church. We have not done enough theology on this."

History's first Latin American pope said he was "pretty tired" but with a happy heart after his first overseas trip.

He said he was amazed at the number of people who turned out to see him in Brazil, especially the three million who jammed Copacabana Beach for Sunday's Mass.

He added that he was unconcerned by the tumultuous start to the trip that included the discovery of a bomb at a shrine he visited and the mob scene that took place when his driver inadvertently made wrong turn.

"There's always the danger of a crazy person, but there is also the Lord," he said. "This being close is good for everyone."

N. Korea stages anniversary parade

North Korea has staged a military parade to mark the 60th anniversary of the Korean War ceasefire. Source: AAP

THE North Korean capital Pyongyang has put its military hardware on show at a major parade to mark the 60th anniversary of the Korean War ceasefire, presided over by leader Kim Jong-Un.

Thousands of troops and spectators roared "Protect Kim Jong-Un with our lives" when the youthful leader appeared on the podium, flanked by top party and military leaders at the sprawling Kim Il-Sung square, state TV showed.

The parade, to mark the 60th anniversary of the Korean War ceasefire on July 27, 1953, will be closely watched for any evidence that the North has made tangible progress in its ballistic missile programme.

The last mass military parade in the North Korean capital was held on April 15 last year for the birth centenary of the North's founder leader Kim Il-Sung.

Since then, the North successfully launched a long-range rocket in December and conducted its third nuclear test in February.

Both events drew UN sanctions and triggered a surge in military tensions on the Korean peninsula that lasted for several months.

At Saturday's parade, Kim and his troops saluted as the blue, white and red national flag and the yellow and red flag of the ruling Workers' Party were raised.

"Let's fight, fight, fight ... for our republic!" soldiers chanted.

The parade was conducted with two large portraits of Kim's father and grandfather hung on the front side of the gigantic Grand People's Study Hall, situated on the square.

Choe Ryong-Hae, the country's highest military official, said in a speech that "the proud and victorious history" created by the North's founder Kim Il-Sung and his son Kim Jong-Il had passed down to "our great general Kim Jong-Un" in a third generation succession.

"The respected leader Kim Jong-Un has upgraded our military and taken the solidarity among our people to a whole new level", Choe said.

"Peaceful environment is more important than anything else for our country that strives to achieve economic construction and improvement of the lives of people".

He said, however, North Korea has to be ready for war if it wants peace.

"All servicemen and people should ... strengthen our defence and be firmly prepared to fend off any attacks from the outside."

The parade last April witnessed the first major public speech by Kim Jong-Un since coming to power following his father Kim Jong-Il's death in December 2011.

He was widely expected to make a similar address on Saturday.

China's Vice President Li Yuanchao, heading the Chinese delegation invited for the anniversary celebrations, joined Kim on the podium.

China's relationship with North Korea - famously described by Mao Zedong as being as close as "lips and teeth" - was forged in the 1950-53 Korean war which China entered to prevent the North's total defeat.

But it has weakened significantly over the years, as China's economic transformation has distanced it from the ideological rigidity of the dynastic Kim regime across the border.

In line with UN sanctions, Beijing has moved to restrict Pyongyang's financial operations in China which the international community says are the major conduit for funding its nuclear weapons programme.

12K gaming rig renders 1.5 billion pixels per second for just $17,000 (video)

DNP 12K gaming brings frame rates and resolution to OMFGlevels

Think your gaming rig's impressive because it can run Metro: Last Light with maxed out settings at 60FPS? Well, Microsoft rounded up a trio of Sharp PN-K321 32-inch 4K monitors and wired them to a Windows 8 PC stuffed with three ASUS 7970 GPUs. The $17,000 experiment proved two things: Such tech is outside our price-range, and it takes a huge amount of support to get it working. For instance, before AMD wrote custom drivers to make Eyefinity and multi-stream transport play nicely together, the framerate was a meager 8FPS. It's worth noting that even after all that, demos only lasted a few minutes before the computer's power supply would conk out -- but maybe the kinks will be fixed in time for us to play Battlefield Bad Company 5 on it.

Chinese toddler critically ill after parking row attack

BEIJING: A two-year-old Chinese girl was in critical condition Thursday after being thrown to the ground by a man in a row with her mother over parking, a hospital and state media said.

The man, identified only by his surname Han, wanted to park by a bus stop in Beijing, the Beijing Times said, citing a witness.

But the woman pedestrian would not move out of his way as she was checking on her daughter at the time.

Han, in his 40s, emerged from his Hyundai Sonata and hit the woman before taking the toddler out of her pram, holding her up and throwing her "forcefully" to the ground, said the witness, a street stall owner surnamed Zhou.

"The baby made no noises after being dropped, not even a cry of pain," the newspaper quoted Zhou as saying.

Another man came out of the car and also beat the mother before the pair drove away, it added.

The mother rushed the girl to a nearby medical facility and the report said she died while being transferred to Beijing Tiantan Hospital.

But that hospital indicated to AFP that the toddler remained under treatment.

"She is still alive," said a hospital official, declining to be named or to provide further details.

The Legal Daily said the girl remained in critical condition, adding she had stopped breathing at one point and was being kept alive by a respirator.

Police found Han, who was released from prison this year after serving a sentence for theft, in a hot spring bathhouse on Wednesday and detained him, said the report.

He could be charged with serious assault if the girl survives, the Legal Daily cited lawyers as saying, making him eligible for a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison.

A death sentence could be handed down if she dies and he is charged with murder, according to other Chinese reports.

How big can Apple go? 13-inch iPad may be on the way

iPad

Apple's current iPad lineup

Apple

Apple's current iPad lineup could get a new 13-in. big brother.

Your next iPhone or iPad may be noticeably bigger than the device you?re carrying around today. Apple is reportedly testing a whopping 13-inch display for the iPad and larger iPhone displays, according to officials at the company?s suppliers.

Over the past few months, Apple has allegedly asked for prototypes of an iPhone with a display larger than four inches and a screen design for a tablet just under 13 inches, The Wall Street Journal reported. If Apple does decide to launch a bigger iPad, we may see this device as soon as the first half of 2014, according to Korean news source ET News.

This follows reports from last month that suggested Apple was experimenting with 4.7 and 5.7-inch screens for its future iPhones, although the company (as per usual) has not confirmed any plans for its upcoming products.

MORE: 25 Best iPad Apps

There?s no telling if these purported large-screened iPhones and iPads will ever make it to the market, but these reports suggest Apple is brainstorming new ways to appeal to consumers and snag the top smartphone spot from Samsung. While Apple is still the industry leader when it comes to tablet sales, Samsung claimed 33.1 percent of the smartphone market in the first quarter of 2013, while Apple only accounted for 17.9 percent of handset sales during the same period, according to Strategy Analytics.

The Wall Street Journal?s sources also suggest that Apple plans to refresh its 9.7-inch iPad with in-cell touch technology to create a thinner, sleeker design. Apple is currently ramping up production for this alleged iPad model just as suppliers have begun mass production on components for the new iPhone as well.

The upcoming iPhone that is expected to launch during the second half of this year will have the same screen size and resolution as the current iPhone 5, the newspaper reports. At the same time, Apple is working with manufacturing partners in Asia to create a less-expensive non-metal iPhone that will come in multiple color options.

Gold seen in neutron star collision debris

Material ejected in gamma-ray bursts may be source of heavy elements

Gold explosion

New observations suggest that colliding neutron stars (shown in this artist's conception) produce short gamma-ray bursts. Such collisions also eject material that may be the source of the universe's gold and other heavy elements.

Credit: Dana Berry/SkyWorks Digital, Inc.

Dead stars make good alchemists.

Images snapped by the Hubble Space Telescope suggest that gold may have been generated by a violent neutron star collision that also yielded lead, platinum, uranium and other heavy elements.

The stellar smashup was detected on June 3, when NASA?s Swift satellite observed a gamma-ray burst 3.9 billion light-years away. Astrophysicists believe that a crash between two neutron stars, the dense, neutron-rich cores left over after massive stars explode, released the 0.2-second flash of energy.

Images snapped by the Hubble Space Telescope nine days later saw evidence for a bounty of heavy elements amounting to about 1 percent of the sun?s mass and including several moon masses of gold, says Edo Berger of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics in Cambridge, Mass. Given the amount of gold and the fact that these collisions probably happen once every 10,000 or 100,000 years in any given galaxy, such crashes could account for all of the gold in the universe, he says.

Berger?s team posted its findings June 17 on arxiv.org.

The idea that neutron star collisions create heavy elements was suggested in the 1970s by James Lattimer, now at Stony Brook University in New York, and colleagues. Back then, Lattimer says, there were few observations of neutron stars and computers were slow. So, Lattimer says, ?the calculations were fairly crude, and I?m not sure people believed the model that much.?

Instead, most astrophysicists thought elements heavier than iron ? those that don?t form via fusion within a star ? resulted from massive stars collapsing in supernovas. But computer simulations have had a tough time showing that this is possible, Lattimer says.

Although Lattimer says it?s ?comforting? that the findings fit with the neutron star theory, he notes the results are ?still fairly speculative.? The Hubble images show a glow of infrared light that Berger?s team says is characteristic of radiation emitted by the radioactive decay of heavy elements. Yet the team can?t rule out that the light was produced by the gamma-ray burst itself, Lattimer says.

Upcoming missions such as the Advanced Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory will make it easier to find short gamma-ray bursts and may confirm whether they are triggered by neutron stars, says astrophysicist Neil Gehrels of NASA?s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md.

And new telescopes such as the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope that monitor larger swaths of sky will make it easier to distinguish between a gamma-ray burst?s afterglow and shine coming from heavy elements. Finding signs of heavy elements, which require a lot of neutrons, in association with short gamma-ray bursts is the best evidence yet that neutron star collisions make heavy elements.

Here Comes Another Obama ?Pivot to Jobs?

My fellow Americans, we?re very lucky. The man who has been president going on five years now believes that Washington isn?t paying sufficient attention to the economy. So he?s going to give a bunch of speeches about it! Isn?t it always nice to hear about the economy from a man whose only connection with one is to wreck it?

The first of the series of speeches is set to come Wednesday at Knox College in Galesburg, Ill., where Obama delivered an economic speech shortly after he was elected a U.S. senator in 2005. He?ll then travel to the?University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg, Mo., to deliver remarks later that day.

In a blog post that was emailed out to those subscribed to the White House listserv, White House senior advisor Dan Pfeiffer billed it as a speech ?you?re going to want to watch.?

?The President thinks Washington has largely taken its eye off the ball on the most important issue facing the country,? Pfeiffer said.

?Instead of talking about how to help the middle class, too many in Congress are trying to score political points, refight old battles, and trump up phony scandals. And in a couple of months, we will face some more critical budget deadlines that require Congressional action, not showdowns that only serve to harm families and businesses ? and the President wants to talk about the issues that should be at the core of that debate.?

The ?refight old battles? line is a slap at Republicans who have tried in vain to repeal the job-killer known as Obamacare. He started road testing that line last week when he surrounded himself with human props and gave a speech designed to knock the IRS hearing off newscasts and out of most punditry. These news speeches, then, will be about protecting the ground Obama has gained, and about distracting away from the Democrats? internal fault line on that law and from the Obama scandals.

That ground does need protecting. Thirty-five Democrats voted with the Republicans to delay the Obamacare employer mandate last week. Some of those then turned around and voted with the rest of the Democrats against delaying the individual mandate, putting the Democrats on the record valuing corporations above people. They are the party that supports billion dollar corporation Planned Parenthood in lockstep, though, which takes valuing corporations over people to an almost absurdly comedic level.

This latest ?pivot to jobs? will further a great lie, which is that the Democrats? vision of immigration reform will help jump start the economy. What it?s actually likely to do if it passes is legalize millions of workers at the lower levels of our economy, who will compete with the Americans and legal immigrants who are already here, while further straining government services.

Military Sexual Assault Bill Would Reassign Authority

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y., is fighting for her bill to curb sexual assaults in the military. Her measure would give independent military prosecutors, rather than commanders, the power to decide which cases should be tried in military court.

Military leaders fiercely oppose moving that authority outside the chain of command, arguing that commanders are responsible for the health and welfare of their soldiers. Removing their authority would undermine their ability to lead, they say.

Gillibrand says commanders are not experts on serious assaults and are unable to prevent retaliation against victims who report crimes.

"Frankly, they've failed up until now to keep the command climate free of assault, rape and retaliation," she says.

Gillibrand's bill, which includes murder along with rape and sexual assault, was rejected by the Senate Armed Services Committee, but has gained bipartisan backing from senators outside the committee, including Republicans Rand Paul of Kentucky and Ted Cruz of Texas. She intends to bring the bill to the Senate floor, where members outside the committee have fewer ties to military.

"We created this framework because, frankly, that's what our allies have done in the past," Gillibrand told weekends on All Things Considered host Jacki Lyden.

"The UK, Israel, Australia, Canada, Germany, all have removed serious crimes outside of the chain of command to create an objective military justice system that doesn't have command influence affecting the outcome."

Interview Highlights

On commanders' responsibilities

"Only the commanders are responsible for ensuring good order and discipline and they have to set a command climate where, first of all, these rapes and assaults aren't taking place. But if they do take place, [commanders can make sure] that there is room for reporting, that people feel comfortable, that justice can be done and to assure that there is no retaliation.

"What we are finding, though, is that commanders in charge today are not assuring that for victims. Sixty-two percent of victims who have reported their crimes report that they were retaliated against for reporting."

How to define assault

"For the most part, these are violent crimes. There's no confusion. Of the 3,300 cases that were actually reported, 70 percent were violent assaults and violent rapes, criminal conduct that is based on power and domination. These are not dates that have gone badly, these are not questions of whether she said yes, then no, then yes, then no. This is not an issue of hormones, as some of my colleagues have mentioned. These are violent crimes perpetrated by, often, predators who are recidivists, and these are crimes of domination and violence."

What's at stake in this uphill battle?

"At the end of the day, commanders aren't objective. Commanders may have different training, different perspectives. They may or may not want women in the armed forces. They may not understand what sexual assault is, or what constitutes rape. They may not agree, what is a rape or not a rape. But that shouldn't be their judgment. It should be an objective, trained prosecutor who makes the decision about whether or not there is evidence to prosecute these crimes. That hopefully will instill more confidence in the system, that justice can be possible."

Muffins might just be the greatest breakfast food ever invented. You can pop the top, you can eat the whole thing in three bites (and then have another), and you can take them to go. It's hard to find a wrong way to eat a muffin.?

This spring a new cookbook arrived on the desk of Stir It Up!, "Flour, Too" by Joanne Chang. Here in Boston, we're big fans of Ms. Chang and her chain of bakeries, Flour, where muffins aren't the only breakfast stars (think brioche, croissants, homemade pop tarts, and out-of-this-world sticky buns). Ms. Chang's first cookbook "Flour,"?which highlights her baked goods,?left our hands itching for some dough. "Flour, Too" is organized more like a traditional cookbook with sections for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and party ideas.?

The breakfast section of "Flour, Too" is divided into sweet and savory chapters, and has two versatile muffin recipes. We tested Chang's vegan vanilla mixed-berry muffins and found the recipe simple and unfussy, and the muffins moist, dense, and packed with fruit. Substituting regular milk for soy milk and skipping butter or eggs makes this recipe vegan, but doesn't compromise the taste or texture. They may just be the perfect muffins. (Try them yourself by following the recipe below.)

But we are wondering: Is it possible that somewhere out yonder an even greater muffin recipe is waiting to be discovered and shared with the world? So we turn to you, dear readers, for your best homemade muffin recipes. Follow our guidelines to submit your recipe. Stir It Up! will narrow down submissions to three finalists, and the folks here in CSMonitor.com newsroom will vote on the winner. The winning recipe will be featured on Stir It Up!, and the baker will receive a copy of "Flour, Too" signed by chef-author Joanne Change.

The muffin mix-off contest: How to enter

Send your favorite homemade muffin recipe to food@csps.com. Please include an ingredient list, step-by-step numbered instructions, along with your name, hometown, and e-mail address. Please submit your recipe by August 1. We will contact the winner. (To keep things fair and unbiased, this contest is not open to employees of CSMonitor.com or their families. But if you want to bake for us anyway, we do accept care packages.)

Show us your creations: We also love food photos. Pictures inspire readers to try something new. So be sure to submit your mouth-watering muffins artfully displayed. (Hint: natural light works best. Vegan vanilla-mixed berry muffins
Reprinted with permission from "Flour, Too," by Joanne Chang?

2-2/3 cups all-purpose flour

2 teaspoons baking soda

1 teaspoon kosher salt

1 cup granulated sugar

3/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons vegetable oil, such as canola

1-1/3 cups plain soy milk

2 tablespoons distilled white or cider vinegar

1 tablespoon vanilla extract

1 cup fresh or frozen raspberries

1 cup fresh or frozen blueberries

1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F, and place a rack in the center of the oven. Line the cups of the muffin tin with paper liners or generously oil and flour them.

2. In a medium bowl, combine the flour, baking soda, salt, and 3/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons of the sugar and stir until well mixed. In a separate bowl, whisk together the vegetable oil, soy milk, vinegar, and vanilla. Make a well in the dry ingredients and pour the wet ingredients into the middle of the well. Stir with a rubber spatula until well mixed. Add the raspberries and blueberries and mix until the fruit is evenly distributed.

3. Spoon an equal amount of batter into each prepared muffin cup. Sprinkle the tops with the remaining 2 tablespoons sugar.

4. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes, or until the muffins are pale gold and the tops spring back when pressed gently in the middle. Let cool in the tin on a wire rack before popping them out. The muffins taste best on the day they are baked, but any uneaten muffins can be stored in a covered container at room temperature for 2 or 3 days. So long, 'Optimus' ? LG G2 up next

LG G2

LG on occasion has announced products before actually announcing the products, and the trend continues today with the "LG G2." This should be (is) the successor to the Optimus G, and should (will) get our hands on it in a few weeks in New York City. It also marks the end of the "Optimus" name for LG's flagship devices.

Google's translation points to "a user-friendly and innovative new mobile experience" — which can mean whatever the hell LG wants to it, but consider our interest piqued. LG has already said to expect the Snapdragon 800 SoC and have a theoretical speed of 150 Mbps — LTE-A. But most of us won't see that anytime soon.

In addition to dropping the "Optimus" name from this line, LG also said its 4:3 aspect ratio Optimus Vu will now just be called "Vu." So there's that.

See you in NYC next month.

Inner speech speaks volumes about the brain

[unable to retrieve full-text content]Whether you're reading the paper or thinking through your schedule for the day, chances are that you're hearing yourself speak even if you're not saying words out loud. This internal speech -- the monologue you "hear" inside your head -- is a ubiquitous but largely unexamined phenomenon. A new study published in Psychological Science looks at a possible brain mechanism that could explain how we hear this inner voice in the absence of actual sound.

Visit 50,000 Year Old Underwater Primeval Forest Found in Gulf of Mexico

Imagine swimming in an underwater primeval forest that nature has preserved for over 50,000 years. ?Now you can if you are willing to dive 60 feet below the surface of the Gulf of Mexico, 10 miles offshore of Alabama.

Experts believe 2005?s Hurricane Katrina unveiled what had been buried under ocean sediment for centuries. ?And it took some curious fishermen to discover it by questioning why there so many fishing congregating in one area.

The discovery was made in 2012 but only recently became public knowledge. ?The find was confirmed when a dive team and experts from Louisiana State University took the 60 foot plunge and found a primeval cypress forest nearly one mile wide. ?The thriving eco system has stood devoid of oxygen for over 12,000 years. ?Some of the tree stumps found are half-a-mile in diameter. ?Scientists from Louisiana State tested some of the samples brought up by divers that proved to be 52,000 years old. Poll: More than half of voters say Snowden is whistle-blower, not traitor

The Guardian via Reuters, file

More than half of U.S. voters think NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden, is not a traitor.

By Henry Austin, NBC News contributor

More than half of American voters say self-declared NSA leaker Edward Snowden is a whistle-blower not a traitor, according to a poll published Wednesday.

The fugitive, believed to be holed up in the transit zone of Moscow?s Sheremetyevo Airport, was supported by 55 percent of those surveyed by?researchers at Quinnipiac University, Connecticut.

About one-third (34 percent) of those polled said they believed Snowden had betrayed his country. ?

Of those who backed his decision to leak the contents of classified documents in order to expose the extent of government-sanctioned surveillance, there was equal representation from almost every gender, social group and political persuasion.

The remaining 11 percent did not have an opinion.

Peter Brown, assistant director of the school?s Polling Institute said the result illustrated public shock at the scope of intelligence-gathering by government agencies seeking to prevent future terror attacks.

"The fact that there is little difference now along party lines about the overall anti- terrorism effort and civil liberties and about Snowden is in itself unusual in a country sharply divided along political lines about almost everything,? he said. ?

?Moreover, the verdict that Snowden is not a traitor goes against almost the unified view of the nation's political establishment."?

Researchers asked 2,014 American voters: "Do you regard Edward Snowden, the national security consultant who released information to the media about the phone scanning program, as more of a traitor, or more of a whistle-blower?"

Brown added: "Americans' views on anti-terrorism efforts are complicated. They see the threat from terrorism as real and worth defending against, but they have a sense that their privacy is being invaded and they are not happy about it at all."?

Venezuela is the "most likely" asylum choice for former U.S. intelligence contractor Edward Snowden, the journalist who published the contents of the self-professed leaker's classified documents said Tuesday.

But his travel problems could take time to resolve as his U.S. passport has been canceled and U.S. allies may deny airspace to any flight on which he is believed to be traveling.

CNN Legal Analyst Decries Defense's 'Critical' Mistake Of Calling ...

CNN Legal Analyst Paul Callan told anchor Ashley Banfield that the George Zimmerman defense made a major blunder in calling self-defense expert Dennis Root to the stand to testify on what many believe will be the last day of the defense?s case.

?This was like the prosecutors finally getting a chance to cross-examine George Zimmerman,? Callan said. ?This was a foolish move, the first big error by the defense. What it did was, it allowed the prosecutor to develop every possible inconsistency in the Zimmerman story and have a live witness trying to explain his way out of it.?

?They should have rested yesterday after great testimony from the medical examiner,? Callan said.

Root?s testimony came under heavy scrutiny during cross-examination by prosecuting attorney John Guy, who attacked Root?s credentials, motives, and thoroughness en route to demonstrating how much of his pro-Zimmerman testimony didn?t seem credible.

?The use of the dummy is now going to throw a lot of ideas into the minds of these jurors, about, ?You know, maybe that?s the way it did happen that way,?? Callan said. ?I just think this is going to be looked at as a critical error by the defense in this case, even if they end up winning it. We lawyers sometime call it ?overtrying your case,? calling too many witnesses.?

Callan?s case seemed to turn Banfield around.

?You?re seeing the exact opposite way,? Banfield said. ?I had this impression that, ?What are these prosecutors doing pretending to be Trayvon Martin on that dummy? This is crazy! You shouldn?t be showing it!? But I see where you?re going with that.?

FARM BILL SPLIT House GOP Drops Food Stamps From Legislation

House Republican leaders are taking a risky step as they try to bring a massive farm bill back to the floor, dropping food stamps from the legislation in the face of Democratic opposition.?

The farm bill historically has been a vehicle for both oodles of farm subsidies and billions of dollars worth of food stamps. Twinning the two massive programs has in the past helped win support from rural-state lawmakers and those representing big cities. But after the bill failed in the House last month, Republican leaders are trying a different approach.?

Teeing up a vote as early as Thursday, GOP leadership released a smaller version of the five-year bill late Wednesday. They dropped the section pertaining to the $80 billion-a-year food stamp program.?

Republicans are divided on how big cuts should be to food stamps, which have doubled in cost in the last five years. Democrats have opposed any cuts. The dropped section would have made a 3 percent cut, which many Republicans say isn't enough.?By dropping the section altogether, House leaders hope to win over more conservatives.?

But the White House is adamantly opposed to separating food stamps from the rest of the farm bill. Late Wednesday, the White House released a statement saying that President Obama would veto the House legislation if it is sent to him. The statement said that the food stamp program "is a cornerstone of our nation's food assistance safety net, and should not be left behind as the rest of the Farm Bill advances."

Republicans have been counting votes for the bill containing only the farm programs over the last two days. Farm groups, anti-hunger groups and some conservative groups have all opposed the idea.

In a letter to House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, last week, more than 500 farm groups asked the GOP leadership not to split the legislation.

The Democratic-led Senate, which overwhelmingly passed a farm bill with smaller cuts to food stamps, would be reluctant to go along with a split bill or further cuts to the programs.

Senate Agriculture Committee Chairwoman Debbie Stabenow, D-Mich., said splitting the bill would be a "major mistake" -- though she has also indicated a willingness to try building off anything the House passes.?

Some conservative groups have also campaigned against the strategy. Andy Roth of the Club for Growth sent a letter to members Wednesday saying the new bill would merely end up "leaving us back where we started."

Minnesota Rep. Collin Peterson, the top Democrat on the House Agriculture Committee, said he sees ?no clear path to getting a bill passed by the House and Senate and signed by the president.?

House Agriculture Chairman Frank Lucas, R-Okla., said as recently as last week that he opposed splitting the bill. But he has now reluctantly agreed to the strategy, saying he would support it if his Republican leaders could deliver the votes. Late Wednesday, he gave a reserved endorsement of the plan to the GOP-controlled Rules Committee, which determines the procedures for floor debate.

?Maybe the old dynamic of how we have done things since 1965 isn?t valid anymore,? he said. ?Maybe it is time to try something different.?

Lucas said as he left the meeting that he didn?t know if the leadership had the 218 votes necessary for passage.

The bill would also repeal laws from the 1930s and 1940s, essentially eliminating all old farm policy, which some conservatives like.?

Farm-state lawmakers have kept those laws on the books so there would be incentive to pass new farm bills and avoid expiration, but the threat of outdated policies kicking in has been a headache for farmers who worry they can?t depend on Congress to create new laws or extend more recent versions of the law.

Repealing those decades-old laws could mean that Congress would have little incentive to create new farm bills, however, and could make many farm programs permanent.

Fox News' Chad Pergram and The Associated Press contributed to this report.?

Zynga is getting closer to offering real-money gambling on ... - GigaOM

For all of Zynga?s talk about online betting, it looks like the company is finally taking some action.

Venturebeat reports that t0day, at an event in Barcelona, Zynga will unveil what it?s been working towards for the last year: a fully functional real-money gambling game. In addition, both ZyngaPlusPoker and ZyngaPlusCasino will have a home on the company?s original hit-maker, Facebook.

There?s no word on when the apps are coming out, but both will launch in the UK (where online gambling is legal) in a partnership with established poker company Bwin. Facebook users can access the traditional ?social? version of the games ? which means playing with in-game currency but not cashing-in your earnings ? or access a special portal hosted by Bwin that includes all the benefits of online gambling.

To enter the real-gambling section, users will have to prove their birthdate (UK requires gamblers to be over 18), verify that the region they are in allows online betting, and then place a deposit to Bwin that covers any losses.

In addition to giving users a chance to win (and lose) real money, Zynga will offer promotional prizes to stay at hotels and casinos ? leading the online gamblers to real felt tables.

Britain is the ideal test-case for Zynga, with it?s concentration of seasoned online gamblers contributing to a??2.3 billion ($3.4 billion) industry for the country. From there, the sights are no doubt set on the United States, which, despite its currently restrictive gambling laws, could be worth $9.3 billion by 2020.

ZyngaPlusPoker and ZyngaPlusCasino are the culmination of months of work at the?struggling California gaming company, which has suffered declines in revenue and loss of personnel over the last few years. Unveiling the games would be the second piece of big news for the company in a week, the other being the appointment of former Microsoft exec Don Mattrick as CEO.

Zynga won?t be raking in the big money just yet ? though if some US congresspeople have their way, it could come sooner rather than later. Bloomberg reports that Representative Peter King (R-N.Y) submitted a bill in June to eliminate federal regulation of online gambling. From there, states would be allowed to make their own rules, but the rollout is likely to be slow.?Still, the fact that the games are even heading out the door and arriving on Facebook is a win for the company, which has had a strained relationship with the social network.

Amazon shares hit another record on strong sales data

By Alistair Barr

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Amazon.com Inc shares hit another record on Thursday after e-commerce firm ChannelAdvisor Corp released strong online sales data.

ChannelAdvisor reported that client sales on Amazon.com jumped 30.6 percent in June, compared with the same month last year. That year-over-year growth rate was up from May's rate of 25.8 percent.

ChannelAdvisor also reported that client sales on eBay's online marketplace rose 17.7 percent in June, compared with a year earlier. May's growth was 16 percent year-over-year.

ChannelAdvisor helps merchants sell more on websites such as Amazon.com, eBay.com and Google Inc's shopping site. Investors watch the firm's data closely because it provides an early window into the performance of the leading U.S. e-commerce companies.

The second quarter is typically one of the slowest periods for online shopping, falling after the winter holiday buying binge and before the back-to-school rush. However, the ChannelAdvisor data suggests that Amazon and eBay performed solidly at the end of the second quarter.

"Together, these data points show that in June, all e-commerce channels performed better than in May," ChannelAdvisor Chief Executive Scot Wingo wrote in a blog on Thursday. In May, "overall retail sales were muted due to weather trends, which seem to have dissipated in June."

Amazon shares rose 1.2 percent to $295.72 in morning trading Thursday and earlier touched a record $295.88. On Wednesday they reached a high of $293.34.

EBay shares rose 1.3 percent to $55.57 in morning action on Thursday.

EBay is an investor in ChannelAdvisor.

Accessory Review: Mongrel Glass ? Galaxy S4 Screen Protector

Screen protectors are becoming an important addition to the modern smartphone. As screens get bigger, the price of repairing a smashed screen goes up. In many cases, the price of a new screen seems at odds with the overall price you?ve paid for the device, but you?ll grin and bear it because it?s still cheaper than getting a new phone.

Mongrel Glass, from Melbourne-based Android specialists Mongrel Phones, is not your average screen protector. The most obvious differentiator that sticks out is the price: it?ll set you back $45 ? about 4 times the price of your average plastic screen protector you?d buy from eBay, DealeXtreme or even just a booth in a suburban shopping centre.

Unlike those screen protectors though, Mongrel Glass is different. It?s made of 8 (!) layers of material, and even includes its own layer of tempered glass. You can find the full composition of the material and more on their site. Once you?ve applied Mongrel Glass, you get the sense your device should be impervious to most things short of an asteroid collision.

As Mongrel Phones is an Australian company, we were anxious to try the product out. Buzz and I have been using Mongrel Glass on our Galaxy S4s for a week or so now. Here?s what we found.

Application

It?s clear from a look through the packaging that a lot of thought has gone into the application and usage of Mongrel Glass. The product arrives in a padded, sealed box that contains a number of assistive devices to help you apply your screen protector:

  • Wet wipe
  • Dry wipe
  • Cleaning cloth
  • Dust removal stickers
  • Button inserts
  • Mongrel Glass ? can?t forget this

The screen protector itself is packaged up as you would expect with a front and back protective film that you?ll need to remove in order to apply it to your device. What?s different though is the ?positioning sticker? that?s stuck to the side, allowing you to line up the screen protector where you want it to be placed on your screen and stick it to the side of your phone to ensure you get the positioning right during application ? all of this happens before you remove anything.

Once you?ve lined up the screen protector, you?re directed to use the wet wipe and dry wipe in succession to remove dust and fingerprints from your device?s screen. Anything left can then be dealt with by the dust removal stickers ? just stick them over the dust and pull it up and it?s gone. After that, it?s business as usual ? you remove the back film, stick the screen protector in place, then remove the front film and press it down as needed.

As the screen protector is a little more rigid and less flexible than others, and so much effort went into preparation with the supplied materials, there were no air bubbles, dust or grit and I barely had to do anything.

mongrel-glass-galaxy-s4_1

My application didn?t go quite according to plan because I didn?t attach the positioning sticker to the side of the device properly, but it?s still good enough ? my advice would be to check the position a few times before proceeding. If you really get it wrong, you can remove it and wash it, although we were advised to be careful if attempting this as you should avoid bending the protector (fair enough ? it?s glass).

Overall I was extremely impressed with the forethought, instructions and attention to detail that?s gone into the product. It?s a cut above the rest and made application easy. It?s heartening to see that Mongrel cares about the application process and not just about getting product out of its warehouse.

Usage

The edges have a pleasing curve to them and feel conducive to running your finger over them in much the same way as the sides of the Nexus 4?s front panel did. The face of the screen protector is smooth to the touch and in no way interferes with touch functions of your device?s screen.

As you?d expect from a screen protector comprising 8 layers of material, Mongrel Glass adds a tangible layer to the front of your phone, although there?s no gap between the protector and the display. One drawback to this is that it adds enough of a layer to stop Samsung?s S-View and Flip covers from fully closing, although once you apply Mongrel Glass you might not need to use those covers to protect the front of your phone any more.

mongrel-glass-galaxy-s4_2

The only clue you?ve got a thick, durable screen protector attached is the lip around the S4?s physical home button. If you need your home button to be level with your screen protector, Mongrel includes a couple of inserts in the package that you can stick to your home button to raise its profile and make it even. I didn?t feel it necessary to use them.

It?s important to note that Mongrel Glass doesn?t instantly ruggedise your phone ? a drop onto a hard surface or a serious impact with the screen can still shatter your pride and joy, but it?s far more durable than a piece of plastic film which will get torn up by passing keys and it does protect your screen from many of its natural enemies. Keys and coins had no effect on the screen protector. The screen even seems more resistant to fingers, and remains perfectly visible when outdoors. What?s not to like?

mongrel-glass-galaxy-s4_3

Worthwhile Protection

With a price tag of $45, Mongrel Glass might be a tough sell to someone who just wants to protect their device against an occasional bump and scratch. Were the price to come in around $25 I think it?d be impulse buy territory and you could see consumers going for the higher priced premium product.

As someone who smashed his Galaxy Nexus screen and footed the near-$300 bill to replace it, I?m all for phone protection, especially when the value of the phones seems to be constantly rising. Ultimately it?s up to you to weigh up whether you?re happy to make the investment, but Mongrel has impressed me. In the interests of protecting your phone, and supporting an Aussie company with a good product while you?re at it, I highly recommend you give it a shot.

You can order your own Mongrel Glass for Galaxy S4 for $44.95 from the Mongrel Phones site.

AS I KEEP SAYING, THE GOP NEEDS TO CAMPAIGN TO MAKE AMERICAN ABORTION LAWS ?MORE EUROPEAN.? BBC: European Abortion Rules. Imagine, for example, what people would say if Texas tried to impose this rule:

Between 12 and 18 weeks of gestation, the women must discuss the procedure with a social worker. After 18 weeks, permission must be obtained from the National Board of Health and Welfare.

Abortions must be performed by a licensed medical practitioner and, except in cases of emergency, in a general hospital or other approved healthcare establishment.

That?s what it would take to make Texas?s laws as restrictive as Sweden?s.
