Matt Riddle cut from the UFC after second positive test for marijuana

Last week, Matt Riddle talked about how he mended fences with UFC brass over his positive test for marijuana. This week? He tested positive again and lost his job. According to MMA Junkie, Riddle tested positive for marijuana after his UFC on Fuel 7 bout with Che Mills, and was then cut from the UFC. Riddle also tested positive at UFC 149.

While it's true that Riddle has a medical marijuana card in Nevada, he knew full well that the UFC tested for the drug. Whether that drug should be banned is not the point. It is, Riddle knows it's banned, and Riddle broke the rules.

If your boss banned red shirts for no reason at all and you were suspended for wearing your favorite red shirt to work, are you going to wear it again? Yes, you can talk about how your boss is crazy for banning red shirts and work to change his mind on red shirts, but you can't wear the shirt and expect to slide by.

It's also important for UFC fighters to walk the line these days as the promotion looks to trim their roster. UFC president Dana White recently noted that they have approximately 100 fighters to trim from their roster. Riddle made it too easy for them to pick his name.

UPDATE: The UFC released a statement on Riddle's release, which reads in full:

Matthew Riddle tested positive for marijuana metabolites following his bout at UFC on FUEL TV 7 in London, England on February 16, 2013. This is Riddle?s second failed drug test for marijuana within the past seven months. Riddle previously failed a post-fight drug test due to marijuana following his UFC 149 victory over Chris Clements.

As such, the UFC organization is exercising its right to terminate Riddle for breach of his obligations under his Promotional Agreement as well as the UFC Fighter Conduct Policy. The UFC organization has a strict, consistent policy against the use of any illegal and/or performance-enhancing drugs, stimulants or masking agents. The outcome of the bout against Che Mills was changed to a no contest and the results of the positive test will be reported to the official Association of Boxing Commissions MMA record-keeper.

Samsung KNOX Is Brilliant - Business Insider

Earlier this week, Samsung announced its latest way to win business from Apple: a technology called Samsung Knox.

Knox is a new feature that is part of Samsung's SAFE program (which stands for Samsung For Enterprises).?It lets you divide your phone into two halves, one side for work and one side for your personal life.

The work side can be controlled by an employer's IT department. IT can dictate the apps and add all the pesky security features and controls they want. The personal side is controlled by you, and that's where you can load whatever games or other Android apps you want.

Knox is available on any SAFE-certified phone. Right now that's the Samsung Galaxy S III and Galaxy Note II.

So far, reviewers like it. The Verge's Chris Ziegler say it's easy to tell the work side from personal side and switching between them is quick. CNET's walkthough showed it was simple to use, too.

Samsung isn't the first to come up with this idea. Enterprise software company VMware also has a product like this called Horizon Mobile.?LG even won an award last year at CES for its LG Revolution phone which included Horizon software. Plus, BlackBerry offers a similar thing with its new phone, a feature called BlackBerry Balance.

VMware hoped to bring Horizon to the iPhone, too. That would have been big news, because it would have meant Apple was willing to let VMware fiddle with iOS. Not so. VMware does have an iOS app called Horizon Mobile, but the app only allows IT professionals to install apps on an employee's iPhone. It doesn't split the phone into two.

Knox and SAFE are two of Samsung's biggest weapons to win against Apple. Samsung is deliberately loading its smartphones with features to make enterprise IT departments love it. Its hope is that this will encourage IT departments to buy fleets of phones for their employees. Or, if they don't buy the phones, Samsung would like IT professionals to ask their employees to buy Samsung SAFE devices.

Stay tuned for BI Intelligence's in-depth analysis of how Samsung is pursing the enterprise, publishing soon.

Texting Gloves Dangerous in Winter, Says expert

Feb. 26, 2013 ? The popular half-gloves that leave fingers uncovered for texting may be good for communicating electronically but they may also lead to permanent loss of fingers due to exposure to the cold.

"Fingers are one of the first body parts to feel the effects of the cold and damp and along with toes, ears and the nose are frequently subjected to frostbite and even amputation," says Arthur Sanford, MD, Division of Trauma, Surgical Critical Care and Burns, Loyola University Health System. "Better to fat finger a text due to wearing winter gloves than to lose a finger due to the cold."

Frostbite is most likely to happen in body parts farthest from the heart and those with large exposed areas. "Blood vessels start to constrict at or below 32 degrees Celsius to preserve body temperature," says Sanford. "The lack of blood in areas of the body can lead to freezing and the death of skin tissue."

Sanford says he treats frostbite in people of all ages. "The old lady who goes out in the snow to get her mail, falls, breaks a hip and lays in the cold and wet for hours until being discovered is a typical victim of frostbite," he says. "But the younger person who goes on a drinking bender and walks home in the snow and damp is also a familiar sight at Loyola trauma."

When suffering from prolonged exposure to cold, use room temperature or slightly warm water to gently revitalize the body. "Do not use hot water, do not rub with handfuls of snow and do not vigorously massage the frozen area," warns Sanford. Overstimulation can actually worsen the situation.

Winter wellness tips from Sanford and Loyola include the following:

? Dress in layers. "If a sweater, pair of socks or other article of clothing gets wet, you can quickly remove it and still be protected from the cold and wet," says Sanford.

? Wear a hat, gloves or mittens and proper footwear including socks and boots. "Texting gloves may look cool and be handy for communicating but it is better to wear full gloves or mittens and save your fingers," says Sanford.

? When outerwear becomes wet, go inside and change to dry clothing. "Wet socks especially are dangerous and can lead to a condition called trench foot which results in poor blood circulation, decay of tissue, infections and even amputation," says Sanford.

? If affected area becomes numb, turns red or blue, swells or feels hot, go to the emergency department. "An emergency physician will assess the tissue and take the proper steps to save the body part," says Sanford.

Hypothermia, when the body temperature is below 95 degrees F(35 degrees C), was the cause of death for 700 Americans between 1979 -- 1998. "Frostbite in January, operate in July is a common mantra here at Loyola," says Sanford. "Bundling up for winter may take you out of media circulation temporarily but better that than to permanently lose the ability to text due to frostbite."

New device to monitor fetal heart development

Feb. 25, 2013 ? Technology developed at The University of Nottingham has been used in a breakthrough study aimed at developing the first comprehensive model of a fully functioning fetal heart.

The abdominal fetal ECG device, designed originally by academics in the University's Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering and on commercial sale throughout the world since 2008 through the University spin-out company Monica Healthcare Ltd, has been used to observe living fetal hearts of babies in their mothers' wombs.

The collaborative study led by experts at The University of Leeds has discovered that the walls of the human heart are a disorganised jumble of tissue until relatively late in pregnancy -- with development much slower compared to other mammals.

Professor Barrie Hayes-Gill, Professor of Electronic Systems and Medical Devices at The University of Nottingham and joint founder and research director at Monica Healthcare said: "It's absolutely fantastic to see our device being used to detect fetal ECG morphology (i.e. ECG shape) in a non-invasive manner from the surface of the maternal abdomen. In this study the Monica device has been specifically deployed to observe the development of the fetal heart as it goes through gestation.

The fetal heart monitor is a portable, non-invasive device which attaches to the mother's abdomen and measures the electrical activity from the heart of the baby inside her womb. It is currently being used worldwide to monitor fetal heart rates during labour and delivery.

The device uses complex algorithms to correctly identify signals related to the fetal heart rate (FHR) using sensitive ECG-style electrodes. This method of using electrophysiological signals differs from current external monitoring devices that collect FHR and uterine activity data based on physical changes (e.g. change in reflected sound waves and changes on strain gauge) that may cause problems in data interpretation.

The monitor is simple to use, beltless, requires no wires to connect to the display or printer. There is also no need for the constant re-positioning of transducers, which is required with older technology and the mother is free to walk around if necessary.

As part of their study, which has been published in the Journal of the Royal Society Interface Focus, the team from the University of Leeds used the device to administer a weekly fetal ECG recording from 18 weeks until just before delivery.

The data from this, alongside two different MRI scans from the hearts of dead fetuses, was incorporated into a 3D computerised model built up using information about the structure, shape and size of the different components of the heart.

Early results suggest that the human heart may develop on a different timeline from other mammals. While the tissue in the walls of a pig heart develops a highly organised structure at a relatively early stage of a fetus' development, their work suggests there is little organisation in the human heart's cells until 20 weeks into pregnancy. Despite this, the human heart has a regular heartbeat from about 22 days.

Developing an accurate, computerised simulation of the fetal heart is critical to understanding normal heart developments in the womb and, eventually, to opening new ways of detecting and dealing with some functional abnormalities early in pregnancy.

Dr Eleftheria Pervolaraki, lead researcher on the project at the University of Leeds' School of Biomedical Sciences, said: "For a heart to be beating effectively, we thought you needed a smoothly changing orientation of the muscle cells through the walls of the heart chambers. Such an organisation is seen in the hearts of all healthy adult mammals.

"Fetal hearts in other mammals such as pigs, which we have been using as models, show such an organisation even early in gestation, with a smooth change in cell orientation going through the heart wall. But what we actually found is that such organisation was not detectable in the human fetus before 20 weeks," she said.

Professor Arun Holden, from The University of Leeds' School of Biomedical Sciences, said: "The development of the fetal human heart is on a totally different timeline, a slower timeline, from the model that was being used before. This upsets our assumptions and raises new questions. Since the wall of the heart is structurally disorganised, we might expect to find arrhythmias, which are a bad sign in an adult. It may well be that in the early stages of development of the heart arrhythmias are not necessarily pathological and that there is no need to panic if we find them. Alternatively, we could find that the disorganisation in the tissue does not actually lead to arrhythmia."

A detailed computer model of the activity and architecture of the developing heart will help make sense of the limited information doctors can obtain about the fetus using non-invasive monitoring of a pregnant woman.

Professor Holden said: "It is different from dealing with an adult, where you can look at the geometry of an individual's heart using MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) or CT (Computerised Tomography) scans. You can't squirt x-rays at a fetus and we also currently tend to avoid MRI, so we need a model into which we can put the information we do have access to."

He added: "Effectively, at the moment, fetal ECGs are not really used. The textbooks descriptions of the development of the human heart are still founded on animal models and 19th century collections of abnormalities in museums. If you are trying to detect abnormal activity in fetal hearts, you are only talking about third trimester and postnatal care of premature babies. By looking at how the human heart actually develops in real life and creating a quantitative, descriptive model of its architecture and activity from the start of a pregnancy to birth, you are expanding electrocardiology into the fetus."

TCU rifle to return to NCAA Championships

TCU rifle has a shot at its third national championship title in four years, as the team was selected as one of the top eight teams to compete in the NCAA Championship.

The top eight teams were announced Wednesday evening. The competitors are TCU, West Virginia, Kentucky, Alaska-Fairbanks, Jacksonville State, Army, Nebraska and Air Force.

Team qualifiers were determined by combining the team's top three scores in both smallbore and air rifle for the 2012-2013 season, adding the team's score from their qualifier this past weekend and averaging the four scores.

The event will mark the seventh straight year that the Horned Frogs qualified for the NCAA Championship.?The Frogs were national air rifle champions in 2010 and 2012, finished third in 2008 and 2011, and finished fifth in 2007 and 2009.?

Senior Sarah Scherer was the individual smallbore national champion in 2010 and 2012.

The team shot over the 4,700 point-mark three times this season including a school-record of 4,718 against Kentucky on Nov. 17.

Scherer broke the NCAA record in smallbore with an individual 597 score and set the NCAA record for an aggregate score when combined with her 598 score in air rifle.

Team members include Sarah Beard, Catherine Green, Megan Lee and Scherer.

The rifle team went undefeated in the 2012-2013 regular season and are riding a 23-match win streak. The team has only lost two matches since the start of the 2009-2010 season.

Alcatel One Touch Star hands-on

Alcatel One Touch Star handson

Alongside Alcatel's other launches today at Mobile World Congress the One Touch Star is another example of an affordable handset that still manages to maintain good looks with excellent fit an finish. Featuring a 4-inch WVGA AMOLED display, 5-megapixel autofocus camera with LED flash, quad-band GSM and 900 / 2100 UMTS, all powered by a 1GHz dual-core CPU.

The handset is a little on the heavy side, but not in an awful way, more like a quality sort of feeling, reminiscent of iPhone's weight. Clever touches such as the corner tab being recessed a little more to get at the 1500mAh battery and SIM slots -- or dual-SIM slots when optioned with that -- is also a clever touch and just generally adds to the device's appeal. Of course the One Touch Star will be a budget phone but it is also a brilliant example of how lower pricing and excellent quality can coexist. Well done Alcatel, well done. No word on pricing but it is expected to begin shipping sometime in March 2013. A Gallery showing off the cranberry variety is just below the break.

Mayor Nenshi blasts homebuilders group

?

Mayor Naheed Nenshi is reprimanding the top Calgary home builders group for speaking out against the city?s planning department.

Photograph by: Stuart Gradon , Calgary Herald

Mayor Naheed Nenshi has punted the top Calgary homebuilders association from city committees, and wants its president to apologize for recent remarks before lifting this formal reprimand.

The group's head won't apologize for his critical comments, but that might prove to be moot - many aldermen want to discuss and possibly overturn the mayor's action at a council meeting Monday.

The reprimanding letter to the influential Canadian Home Builders Association's Calgary wing, sent Thursday, comes on the heels of Nen-shi's public spat with Premier Alison Redford and her municipal affairs minister over regional planning and a city charter.

But while that power struggle has much of council behind it, that doesn't appear the case with this fresh feud with the organization whose members build new suburbs and infill developments.

"Diplomacy does not seem to be alive and well at the moment," Ald. Gord Lowe said Friday.

Charron Ungar, who delivered the speech that rankled Nenshi, said he was taken aback by the response and wants to speak directly with Nenshi on the matter.

"Since when has being critical meant that you get kicked off of committees?" said Ungar, the association president.

The advisory committees that CHBA members have been yanked off include panels devoted to cutting red tape, planning future growth and overhauling the entire planning department.

Nenshi told the Herald the city would continue to work with the development industry and home builders, but it "will find our representatives from the home building industry elsewhere" until they clarify comments the mayor contends contain "misleading and inaccurate information" regarding the state of development-ready suburban land and the planning system.

He took issue with a speech made by Ungar at a Jan. 9 industry dinner, which was attended by Premier Alison Redford, but not by Nenshi.

Ungar was critical of the city's planning and accused the city of freezing suburban development in favour of increasing density in existing communities.

"Currently, there exists a significant (divide) between city hall and our industry on this issue of how we are going to grow," the Herald reported Ungar saying at the meeting.

Ungar, an executive with a major home builder, called the city's plan to balance growth by increasing density in existing communities "essentially a suburban development freeze."

Nenshi said Ungar's comments to colleagues contradict what CHBA has been saying directly to the city.

"It doesn't mean we can't disagree, we disagree with one another all the time, but we need to do so in a respectful, thoughtful way," Nenshi said in an interview.

The mayor also says Calgary "is up to pre-recession year levels in housing starts."

Council members were informed of Nenshi's letter to the home builders' group in a late-night e-mail Wednesday, hours before it hit inboxes at CHBA. Some aldermen had discussed this option during a closed-door portion of a Nenshi-led committee meeting Tuesday, but many other members feel left in the dark as to what the offending remarks were

"I thought the reaction was too strong and should have not been done by one independent member of council," Ald. Andre Chabot said.

"We're going to have to discuss it as a council and decide whether to uphold that decision or overturn it."

Lowe wants council to bring the group back to the table, even if the city doesn't agree with its perspectives.

"I've taken right royal ma-chine-gunnings from people, and my education and upbringing was that you remain courteous, you keep the door open, you don't slam doors shut and stamp your feet."

Ald. Brian Pincott, who normally agrees with Nenshi on growth and development issues, agreed that some statements need to be corrected.

"Is exile the right answer? I don't know. "We've got to figure that one out. I can't say whether this punishment specifically fits the crime."

The CHBA is a top lobbying force in the city, and its home-builder members are among the top civic campaign finance donors.

Pincott and Lowe both praised the fair, diligent and valuable work of Amie Blanch-ette, the CHBA employee who had until Thursday served on most of those advisory panels. In fact, sources say the mayor's letter made a point of stating that there was no quarrel with Blanchette's own city dealings.

She declined to comment for this story.

NRA vice president urges gun owners to stand up for rights

SALT LAKE CITY ? The National Rifle Association vice president spoke to more than a thousand people Saturday night, urging them to contact their representatives to protect their Second Amendment rights.

Wayne LaPierre, the Executive Vice President of the NRA, gave the keynote speech at the Western Hunting and Conservation Expo at the Salt Palace Convention Center. Recent mass shootings have renewed fierce debate on gun control, but LaPierre said the president's plan "demoniz(es) law-abiding gun owners." The crowd of 1,200 cheered for the leader, who pressed them to fight for their Second Amendment rights.

"As we sit here tonight, we are now facing the single most devastating attack on the Second Amendment that this country has ever seen," LaPierre said.

LaPierre has been criticized for his solution to tragedies like the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting on Dec. 14 that left 20 children and six adults dead. The NRA has proposed placing armed police and security officers in every school.

Saturday, he repeated the proposal.

"There's not a mom or dad that wouldn't feel better when they dropped their kid off at school and saw a police car in the parking lot," LaPierre said. "There's not a mom or dad all over our country in America that doesn't want their children protected."

He also said the plan for universal background checks isn't reasonable, suggesting instead that the government more strictly enforce current gun control laws.

"Don't you be fooled. There is nothing universal" nor "reasonable' about (background checks)," LaPierre said. "This so-called "background check" is aimed at one thing registering your guns. When another tragic opportunity' presents itself, that registry will be used to confiscate your guns."

Isaac Holyoak with the Alliance For Better Utah says, the issues isn't about the Second Amendment, but about increasing public safety.

"Buying a gun should be at least as hard as getting a driver's license," Holyoak said.

Currently, federal law doesn't require background checks for private sales, like sales at gun shows. A handful of states have taken action to close the so-called "Gun Show Loophole," and Holyoak said those states see significantly lower rates of suicide and violence against women with handguns.

"Utah has a high suicide rate. If we want to prevent suicides in Utah, perform background checks," Holyoak said.

Portlandia, Season 3

In?Slate's?Portlandia?TV Club, Chris Wade will IM each week with a different fan of?the show. This week, he discusses ?No-Fo-O-Fo-Bridge? with Slate copy editor Miriam Krule.

Chris Wade: As someone who's been poring over this season, ?No-Fo-O-Fo-Bridge? felt like third-season Portlandia confidently emerging from its metamorphosis into a more complicated and specific kind of sketch show, finally nailing the balance between episodic plots and strong one-off sketches it?s been tinkering with all season. But you?re not that type of fan, right?

Miriam Krule: I've seen a lot of the show, but mostly through clips. And there hasn't been an episode this season I felt I needed to see in full, especially not tonight's. I thought this episode was really short on relatable clips, ones that go viral like "Did you read this?" and the Battlestar Galactica opening, which are the reason I watch the show in the first place.

Wade: Interesting and understandable. Yes, this whole season has seriously lacked notable stand-alone sketches. Tonight?s episode conforms to this trend, but it?s also functioning surprisingly well on a different level. We basically have two mini sitcom arcs: the drama in Fred-Carrie-Alexandra's love triangle and the animated Rat roommates having their friendship tested by a move. Both felt well-realized and left room for strong one-off sketches.

Krule: My favorite scene was Alexandra breaking up with Carrie at a community table restaurant. It was cloaked in the love triangle, but was still funny on its own.

Wade: This might be one of my favorite scenes this show has done. Balancing details from a relationship they hinted at all season (and defined last week) with a classically Portlandian absurd situation and stuffed with jokes relating to both. It handled the relationship-based humor of a good sitcom with the lightness and tangential relationship to reality of a sketch show.?

Krule: Can you explain the appeal of the rats? It seems like in some writing meeting someone said "Well, there should PROBABLY be stop-motion animation in this show ... " But it?s just another scene of people sitting around complaining about toy stores that sell only wooden toys.

Wade: There?s a toy store like that on my block. I agree that the stop-motion animation, while very lushly rendered, feels superfluous and distracting at times. That being said, the last two times we've seen them, the scenes were actually really funny and had a lot of great lines. (Especially from the neurotic third rat, played by producer John Levenstein: "I tried to keep the ad simple, 'roommate wanted,' but it's so much more complicated than that right now.") We also have a few strong one-off sketches. Fred and Carrie navigating the labyrinth of escalators in an urban multiplex was pretty identifiable.

Krule: I thought that was only a Times Square thing, but was a nice touch having the useless ticket rippers, too. The cold open about baby-raising techniques was also good. It was short and sweet and hit just the right note at the end. And Fred "being himself" with the baby is perfect: It seems to me every parent does actually talk to his toddler, or at least wants to, as if they're old friends.

Wade: I liked that all the stand-alones involved Fred and Carrie playing new characters, or at least wearing new wigs, instead of continuing to force material on their heavily used stock characters of Kath and Dave, Peter and Nance.

Krule: Here?s the thing: I?m a fair-weather Portlandia fan. I?ll champion the show when it?s funny, but I?m still not compelled to follow its every move.

Wade: Fair enough, but it might be less and less rewarding to be this kind of fan of the show if it continues this trajectory. Although based on the teaser, the finale looks kind of epic and amazing.

Krule: I might just have to wait for the recap.

Kent State University?s Full-Time Non-Tenure Track (FTNTT) unit of the American Association of University Professors (AAUP) reached a tentative agreement with the university.

The FTNTT Executive Committee approved it February 15, according to an email sent by Tracy Laux, president of the unit, February 20. Union members will receive email invitations to participate in the voting in the next few days.

According to the tentative agreement posted on the AAUP-KSU?s website and to a January 18th post on Kent State website, faculty will receive:

  • Retroactive payment of a 2 ? percent salary increase for academic year 2012 ? 2013
  • Retroactive payment of promotion increases for academic year 2012 ? 2013.
  • A longevity payment of $125 for each year of service (up to 16 years)
  • 2 ? percent across-the-board increase for academic year 2013 ? 2014
  • 2 percent salary increase for academic year 2014 ? 2015 from the 2013-2014 salary
  • 2 percent salary increase for academic year 2015 ? 2016 from the 2014-2015 salary
  • Acceptance of the medical benefits provided to other university employees.
  • Two calls to Laux on February 20 were not returned.

Eric Mansfield, executive director of university media relations, said the university does not comment on agreements until everything has been finalized.

If approved by the union, the Board of Trustees will vote on the agreement, which will be a three-year contract until academic year 2015-2016.

Negotiations between the union and the university began July 12, 2012.

Final health benefit rules clarify confusion

The Obama administration cleared up some confusion on Wednesday about rules governing just which health services insurance companies have to pay for.

    1. Don't miss these Health stories

      1. Long, slow walks may beat shorter, higher intensity runs

Forget about busting your buns on the treadmill. A small new study suggests that you?ll be healthier if you spend your time taking long, slow walks ? and standing instead of sitting whenever possible.

      2. Anti-abortion activists harness states' health policies
      3. 'Ongoing, severe epidemic' of STDs in US, report finds
      4. How much will surgery cost? Good luck finding out
      5. Teen births plummet to record low

For instance, if you get a colonoscopy and the doctor finds a pre-cancerous growth and removes it, that still counts as a cancer screening and you won?t have to pay anything for it. And mental health services must also be fully covered, the Health and Human Services Department says in its final version of the of the so-called essential health benefits rules.

The final rules harden up draft rules published last November, after taking into account thousands of comments. As the 2010 Affordable Care Act requires, insurers will no longer be able to dump patients who are starting to cost too much, they won?t be able to charge women more than men, they have to cover anyone who can pay and they?ll have to pay for maternity care, birth control, eye exams for kids and for mental health services.

They also must provide cancer screening free of charge, but Stephan Finan, senior policy director of the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network, said there was some genuine confusion over some issues, such as colonoscopies. During a colonoscopy, a tiny camera is guided through the colon, along with a device that can remove any suspicious-looking growths then and there.

Sometimes when this happened, doctors would re-classify the colonoscopy as a diagnostic procedure instead of a screening service, Finan said. Patients could then be on the hook for a co-pay or even for several? hundred dollars? if they had to pay co-insurance. ?They have clarified that,? Finan said in a telephone interview.

The rules also make it clear a patient getting a test for the BRCA gene, which raises the likelihood of breast and ovarian cancer, gets both the test and counseling about it for free.

HHS also issued a report detailing how the new rules will greatly broaden coverage of mental health and substance abuse services.

?The Affordable Care Act will provide one of the largest expansions of mental health and substance use disorder coverage in a generation,? Sherry Glied, assistant secretary for planning and evaluation, and colleagues wrote in the report.

?Beginning in 2014 under the law, all new small group and individual market plans will be required to cover 10 Essential Health Benefit categories, including mental health and substance use disorder services, and will be required to cover them at parity with medical and surgical benefit.?

HHS estimates that nearly 20 percent of people who buy insurance do not get mental health coverage included, and nearly a third don?t get coverage for substance abuse disorders. The new rule re-classifies both as essential benefits that insurance companies have to pay for.

HHS says 47.5 million Americans have no health insurance, and a quarter have a mental health condition or substance use disorder -- or both. About 27 million of them will get health insurance by 2017 thanks to the health reform law, the Congressional Budget Office projects.

The final rule doesn?t affect all insurance companies. The requirements apply to individual and small group plans, especially those sold on the new health insurance exchanges, which are online marketplaces for people to buy insurance starting in October, and taking effect in 2014.

They?ll also apply to anyone getting Medicaid for the first time. But they don?t apply to self-insured health plans, and that means a big chunk of people who get health insurance through their work. Finan estimates that 60 percent of people who are covered by an employer are covered by self-insured plans.

?About 35 million Americans will benefit in the individual and small-group market,? Finan says.

The final regulations also clarify prescription coverage. Insurers must pay at least partly for all clinically appropriate drugs, something Finan praises. ?Some of these cancer drugs can cost anywhere between $50,000 and $100,000 a year,? he says. If they weren?t all covered as essential health benefits, some patients may have been on the hook for all or most of that cost.

?A lot of plans today have no out-of-pocket limits, which is why a lot of cancer patients are financially stressed, even if they have health insurance,? Finan says. ?That is one of the big gains for cancer patients under the Affordable Care Act.?

Finan isn?t happy about everything in the rules. They let states use ?benchmark? insurance plans to help them decide what to require as essential health benefits outside of the federal guidelines, and then only for 2014 and 2015. After that, it?s not clear what will happen. ?We would like to see much more uniformity and standardization of benefits coverage,? Finan says.

The Children?s Hospital Association was also unhappy, saying the rules did little to improve pediatric benefits.

?The Association is also disappointed that the administration has not provided a strong definition of habilitative services for children, which means that children with special health care needs may not have access to the services they need,? it said in a statement.

?The Association is very concerned that the flexibility HHS has given states to select services to include in essential health benefits packages could result in the exclusion of critical services for children, particularly those with severe disabilities and lead to state-by-state disparities.?

Technion and the Evolution of Israel: MBAs and Systems Engineers

The oldest University in Israel is the Technion, located in Haifa and established in 1924. The impetus for its creation was based on the fact that Jewish students, due to academic anti-Semitism, were having a difficult time being able to enroll in Technical Universities in their countries of origin. The founders of Israel also recognized the fact that nation building needed a generation of technically proficient engineers and scientists to accomplish essential tasks. The story of how Technion came to be involves luminaries like Herzl, Chaim Weizman, Martin Buber, Ahad Ha?am and even one Kalonymous Zeev Wissotzky, a wealthy tea merchant for whom that tea that everyone drinks here is named after.

There were of course questions and conflicts. For instance where would this Tech University be located? Jerusalem wanted it bad but ultimately Haifa was chosen for its neutrality and in the hopes that locating the University there would attract more Jews to live in the then sparsely populated North. Another issue revolved around the language of instruction. At one point it was decided that courses would be taught in German. The modern Hebrew language was still in its infancy and not perfectly suited for technical and scientific instruction. But once again, it was understood that the Technion was tasked with the mission of nation-building and what kind of nation doesn?t have it?s own language? Eventually, spurred on by a strike by teachers and students, the decision was made to teach in English and thus the Technion was born.

Today, thanks in no small measure to the Technion, Israel is a thriving, technologically advanced country. Furthermore, it is also a hub for world-class innovation and entrepreneurship. It is no longer the embattled little country hanging on by a thread for dear life, subject to existential dilemmas regarding its survival and evolution. As such the role of the Technion is no longer what it was in 1924.

Nowhere is this more apparent than in the institution of two new programs ? namely the StartUp MBA and the Masters (ME) Degree in Systems Engineering, both of which are being taught in English. Why? Well, in the early days, Technion?s mission was internal, focused on Israel, Jews and Israelis. Now with the great success of of its Tech and Business sectors, Israel is seeking to export the methodology of this success to others, and now language is no longer a barrier! Make no mistake about it, these programs are world class in both their conception and execution.

The Systems Engineering Degree is being offered and taught by faculty in what is the 25th best Engineering faculty in the world. More importantly, the 15-month course will immerse students in Israeli culture and society, and give them an intimate experience of Israeli resolve and the ?can-do? attitude that allows interdisciplinary efforts like System Engineering to thrive! I mean, think about it. What was Israel like in 1948? What is it like now? How was that accomplished in a country with so few resources? The ME in Systems Engineering will expose you to those answers and instill in its students the methodology that fuels the country.

The StartUp MBA is an otherwise conventional MBA program designed specifically for those interested in entrepreneurial pursuits, particularly in the methods and conditions that helped Israel develop into the ?StartUp Nation? that it is today. As such the courses, taught entirely in English of course, will take place in a new campus located in the heart of exciting Tel Aviv. Let?s just say that students will not have a lack of things to do in their spare time, and good coffee will be ubiquitously available! The course of study will also bring students in close contact with the major players in Israel?s Startup community as well as the innovators in Technion?s Nobel studded faculty.

These programs are both world-class and uniquely Israeli, and they are accepting applications right now from smart and motivated prospective students. To find out more visit the StartUp MBA web site or The ME in Systems Engineering web site. Apply today or pass this on to someone you know who you think might be interested.

Hackers get into Jeep's Twitter account

DETROIT (AP) ? A Chrysler spokesman says someone hacked into the Jeep brand's twitter account Tuesday afternoon, making false Tweets for about an hour until the company that handles its social media regained control.

The move was similar to an incident involving the Burger King restaurant chain on Monday, although it's unclear if the two incidents are linked.

Hackers posted that the Jeep brand had been sold to Cadillac because employees had been caught using pills. They also posted that there would be no more Jeep production.

Chrysler spokesman Ed Garsten says the company's social media agency got help from Twitter to regain control of the account. He doesn't think the brand name was damaged by the Tweets because most people know it was a prank.

We need an energy market that delivers fair prices - Flint

    19 February 2013

Caroline FlintCaroline Flint MP, Labour's Shadow Energy and Climate Change Secretary, commenting on a warning from Ofgem that falls in Britain's power production capacity are likely to lead to more energy imports and customers paying more, said:

"With warnings that Britain could become more reliant on expensive energy imports it is more important than ever that we have an energy market that delivers fair prices and works in the public interest.

"Labour has set out plans to break the dominance of the energy giants, open up the energy market, protect vulnerable customers from being ripped off and create a tough new energy regulator with the power to force energy companies to pass on savings to consumers. We must also prioritise making Britain's homes better insulated and more energy efficient.

"For the future Britain must become less dependent on volatile fossil fuel prices and invest in home grown sources of clean energy. A clear target to decarbonise Britain's power sector by 2030 must be included in the Energy Bill."

Ex-boyfriend: Mindy McCready left rehab too soon

HEBER SPRINGS, Ark. (AP) ? Mindy McCready threatened suicide after losing custody of her sons earlier this month, yet she was allowed to leave a court-ordered drug rehabilitation program just days before she apparently killed herself at her Arkansas home, her ex-boyfriend said Monday.

Billy McKnight, who was in a long, stormy relationship with McCready and is the father of her oldest child, Zander, said the 37-year-old mother of two stayed in the substance abuse treatment center for about 18 hours before she was allowed to walk free.

McCready died Sunday at her home in Heber Springs, a vacation community about 65 miles north of Little Rock. She was found dead on the front porch, where her longtime boyfriend, musician David Wilson, died last month of a gunshot wound to the head. Authorities are investigating both deaths as suicides but haven't determined an official cause of death.

McKnight told The Associated Press during a phone interview from Tampa, Fla., that McCready and Wilson, the father of her youngest son, were recently engaged. He wondered how she was allowed to go free, given all the turmoil in her life.

"That was a big mistake on the part of whoever released her," McKnight said. "She was in a terrible state of mind. She doesn't perform any more. She wasn't working. She has two kids and her fiance was just killed. There's no way she should be out by herself in a lonely house with nothing but booze and pills. That was a really, really bad mistake, and the end result is tragic."

Arkansas courts were closed for the holiday Monday, so local case documents weren't immediately available.

Neighbors reported hearing two shots Sunday afternoon when they called the Cleburne County Sheriff's Office. Authorities found Wilson's dog dead next to McCready's body at the home, where yellow crime-scene tape looped through a grove of pine trees and around the one-story brick house Monday afternoon.

"Based on what we have found at the scene at this time, we do believe that she took the life of the dog that we are being told by family members belonged to Mr. Wilson before she took her own life," Sheriff Marty Moss said.

The sheriff said McCready's two sons were safe. McKnight said the boys remained in foster care, where they were at the time of their mother's death. McKnight said he was trying to get custody of his son, Zander, but that he was not privy to what was happening with her other son, Zayne, who was born last year.

McCready's sons were put in foster care and she was ordered into rehab earlier this month after McCready's father expressed concern. He told a judge his daughter had stopped taking care of her children and herself after Wilson's death, and that she was abusing alcohol and prescription drugs.

Moss said McCready's cause of death would be released soon, but that "all indicators" point to suicide. Her body has been sent to the state crime lab for autopsy.

For all the highs McCready had early in her career, thanks to the spunky anti-chauvinist hit "Guys Do It All The time," and her first album, "Ten Thousand Angels," which has sold more than 2 million copies, there were many more lows. She previously attempted suicide at least three times, and her fragile state of mindwas always a concern to family and friends. She acknowledged in a 2010 interview that her life was turbulent at times, sometimes self-inflicted.

Over the years her relationships often made the biggest headlines. McKnight was charged with attempted murder after being arrested for beating and choking her. She claimed to be in a long relationship with baseball great Roger Clemens that started when she was 15 and he was 28 and married, but Clemens denied the relationship. She was once engaged to actor Dean Cain.

She also was arrested several times on drug charges, probation violations and a misdemeanor assault charge against her mother.

But there was a period in her life where McCready thought she might be able to escape that pattern. She reluctantly joined the "Celebrity Rehab 3" cast with Dr. Drew Pinsky, and left the show believing she might be able to change.

"She was doing great," Bob Forrest, a chemical dependency counselor who frequently works with Pinsky and appeared on the show, told the AP on Monday. "She would go through these periods of three to six months where she didn't want to drink, didn't have an interest in drinking. And if she didn't drink, she didn't do drugs."

Just months after her appearance on the show in early 2010, McCready told the AP about the release of a new album, "I'm Still Here," her new love in Wilson and plans to reunite with her son, who was in her mother's custody at the time. But the progress seemed to unravel by late 2011. Her album debuted at No. 71 on the country albums chart and failed to gain significant radio airplay, and plans for a book and reality show failed to materialize.

She also was unable to immediately regain custody of Zander. McCready then took the boy from her mother, his legal guardian, and fled to Arkansas over what she said were child abuse fears. She was later found hiding in a home without permission.

McCready is the fifth participant in Pinsky's "Celebrity Rehab" shows to pass away since appearing on the show, and the third from Season 3. Pinsky has been criticized for the deaths and for showing such personal struggles on television.

In a statement, Pinsky said he had recently reached out to the singer after hearing about Wilson's death.

"She was devastated," Pinsky wrote. "Although she was fearful of stigma and ridicule she agreed with me that she needed to make her health and safety a priority. Unfortunately it seems that Mindy did not sustain her treatment."

iPad Mini with Retina may cost 30% more than original Mini

Some have already speculated that the Retina iPad Mini will cost 30% more than the original non-Retina Mini.? While it is fairly obvious that the inclusion of a higher resolution display will cost Apple more to make the upcoming iPad Mini, one has to wonder how much Apple is willing to shave off the Retina iPad Mini?s price tag to keep it at a ?budget conscious? level.

iPad Mini with Retina may cost 30% more than original Mini

Currently, Apple has its iPad Mini without Retina retailing at $329 (16GB), a $130 markup from the original factory?s manufacturing cost.? The Mini?s profit margin is quite large, so there?s a lot of wiggle room for Apple to keep the prices of its Retina iPad Mini close to that of the original iPad Mini.? Still, Apple has always been known as a "premium" brand, so we won't be surprised if Apple decides to keep prices of the original Minis the same and sell the Mini with Retina as its own line with higher price tags.

Testy yet trying: Making a Homeschool Plan Book

I wanted a homeschooling planner. Searching online I came across a huge resource of printables for creating a custom homeschool planner on the New Bee Homeschooler website. Their guide and free resources are amazing. They are absolutely the inspiration for the planner I made for myself. I wanted to customize the pages and since, as you know, I'm a more than a little Type A I made my own planner using Microsoft Publisher. First, I wanted my planner to be half-size. I knew that a full-size planner would be bulky when opened and I want to keep my planner handy at the table when I'm working with the kids. The New Bee planner sheets are all full size. Second, I just wanted to put my own spin on most of the elements. This is how my planner turned out.

    Cover

Here's my cover. It's fairly basic. I decided on an academic year that goes from July through June to match Missouri's school year. The cover includes the date of the school year covered, has an adorable picture of my children to remind me of -why- I'm doing this, and an inspirational teaching quote.

    Section 1: Basic Records

The next page is an annual calendar I intend to use as an attendance record by highlighting or circling the dates when we have school. At the bottom of that page I have typed out the Missouri homeschooling requirements as a reference. School (and homeschooling) is optional in Missouri for kindergarten, so we don't need to adhere to these guidelines strictly our first year. A discussion of the homeschooling guidelines and tracking hours could easily fill a whole other blog post, so I'll leave it at that for now.
After my attendance chart I inserted a single page protector that holds a daily and weekly schedule sheet. I figured that my daily and weekly schedule is quite likely to shift several times during the year, so I wanted to be able to pull this sheet out and replace it with a new version at will.
Next, I created a logging form. Missouri requires 1000 hours of instruction per academic year: At least 600 of the 1000 hours must be in core subjects (math, science, social studies, language arts) vs. other areas of study (art, music, physical education, etc.). At least 400 of the 600 core subject areas hours must be taught at the home location. I created a form to keep track of our hours with codes for the different subject areas and columns to keep track of core vs. non-core hours. Again, this first year logging isn't mandatory, but I decided to work with the system and try to develop a good habit of logging. Also, this gives me a chance to work out any kinks in the system before the logging is mandatory.

    Section 2: State Standards

If my children are going to learn everything they know at home, I'd like to make sure we're covering the basics. I went to the Missouri state teaching standards and created checklists for the kindergarten level standards. I put these checklists in my planner and intend to refer to them regularly and check off the standards we've achieved as Michael shows mastery. That will allow me to see at a glance what we've covered, and what I still need to focus on when doing my planning. Here is an example of page 1 of the Communication Arts Standards. I will do a separate post where I show you my checklists for all the content areas.

    Section 3: Lesson Plans

I have a 2-page spread for each monthly calendar. I put in holidays and birthdays so that I could incorporate holidays and card making into our lesson plans. I also added a different inspirational teaching quotation to each monthly planning calendar page. After each monthly calendar I have 5 weekly plan sheets. Here is what a monthly planner and the weekly planner look like for us.

    Section 4: Quick Reference

Near the end of the planner I put in a couple of quick reference pages I pulled from here and here. One is Bloom's Taxonomy and the other is a critical thinking reference sheet.

Section 5: Independent Reading Log and Notes

At the end of the planner I created an independent reading log. I want to play around with tracking the genre of the books read so that I can try to increase variety over time. This will almost certainly be a much more useful feature when the kids are older, so this form has room to grow. Then I just put in some pages for writing notes about how things are going or for jotting down ideas for things I want to cover in the future.

    Back Cover

This is something I found online on the technology rocks. seriously. website and absolutely loved. She has a huge set of school signs available to download and print. I made my own version of my favorite for the back cover of my planner. I intend to use this as our homeschool rules to guide both the children and myself. I will refer to them regularly and therefore they make the perfect back cover for my planner.

    Printing and Binding

And that's it. I printed them all out and used a binding machine to hold the planner together. I used contact paper to add durability to the front and back cover. I love the way it turned out.

Fort Mill sending 6 wrestlers, Nation Ford 1, to State

    LAURENS --?

Fort Mill qualified six wrestlers for the individual State Championships this weekend and crowned three champions at the Upper State tournament at Laurens High School.

The state tournament will be over two days starting Friday and finishing Saturday evening at the Anderson Civic Center and will not only feature the 4A classification, but both the 3A and 2A-1A classifications as well. There will be 27 wrestlers from York County at the state tournament. The top four from each of the 14 weight classes qualified.

A third of those come from Rock Hill High, which qualified nine of the 14 wrestlers it brought to the Upper State wrestling tournament. Fort Mill and York both qualified six wrestlers, while South Pointe qualified three, Clover qualified two and Nation Ford qualified one.

Despite sending nine wrestlers to the state tournament next week, Rock Hill didn?t have a single wrestler win an Upper State title. The team with the most local titles was Fort Mill, which had three wrestlers ? Tyler Turner (120), Nick Leitten (145) and Zach Dulcie (hwt.) ? all coming away with Upper State titles.

?This is do or die,? said Fort Mill head coach Chris Brock. ?We had some guys that came with the intention of being state champions. We felt like we should have qualified more, but this is a tournament you can?t relax at all at.?

Turner beat Dorman?s Hector Contreras 8-4 to win the Upper State title, while Leitten beat Byrnes? Charlie Conner 3-0 to clinch his title.

Dulcie beat Dorman?s Johnny Martinez 5-1 to win the heavyweight division.

York also crowned an Upper State champion at 126-pounds in Robert Cunningham, who beat Fort Mill?s Jake Strong in the finals.

Fort Mill also qualified Eddie Byrams, who finished third at 113-pounds and Nigel Bostick, who finished fourth at 138-pounds. Byrams beat Hillcrest?s Nathan Roberts to finish third and Bostick lost to Woodmont?s Varlee Kelleh to finish fourth.

The last of the local Upper State champions was Clover?s 220-pound wrestler Zach Conrad, who beat Nation Ford?s Josh Driscoll in the finals by pinning him in the third period. Driscoll was the only Falcons wrestler to qualify for the state tournament next week.

Nation Ford had to scratch one of its wrestlers, Michael Allen, who was injured in practice leading up to the tournament.
