FTC Investigating Google/Moto over FRAND Abuse

Since this is part of the FRAND patent, Microsoft joined Apple in suing Google, and Apple went after an injunction for the Galaxy Tab and Galaxy Nexus over software patents...and sued Samsung...different.

There is no denying Apple has it out for google and samsung, but they have google in their crosshairs, and samsung is just collateral damage, they are after Android and will go about it any which way.

I wouldn't say they get away with murder, but they def have the upper hand in the legal field this week...which has been rare since the past year for them has been a downer in courts...

Movie review: 'Ted' stuffed with raunchy humor | The Salt Lake Tribune

This film image released by Universal Pictures shows Mark Wahlberg, right, with the character Ted, voiced by Seth MacFarlane in a scene from "Ted." (AP Photo/Universal Pictures)

Review ? McFarlane brings ?Family Guy? style to big screen.

Whether you like "Ted" hinges on one thing: How do you feel about Seth McFarlane?

If you?re a fan of Fox TV?s "Family Guy," "American Dad" and "The Cleveland Show" (all of which McFarlane produces), you have an inkling of the salty, raunchy, politically incorrect and sometimes just plain offensive humor that McFarlane brings to his feature directing debut. Now take into account that he?s working with an R rating, and adjust your expectations accordingly.

?

HHHhj

?Ted?

A teddy bear comes to life, and never leaves, in Seth McFarlane?s slashingly funny comedy.

Where ? Theaters everywhere.

When ? Opens Friday, June 29.

Rating ? R for crude and sexual content, pervasive language, and some drug use.

Running time ? 106 minutes.

I think "Ted" is freakin? hilarious. Your mileage may vary.

"Ted" begins like a winsome Christmas fantasy, complete with avuncular narrator (Patrick Stewart) describing a Christmas miracle: A lonely little boy, John, makes a wish that his new teddy bear could talk for real. The wish comes true, and the bear, now named Ted, becomes John?s best friend forever. Ted also becomes a minor celebrity, first adored by the masses and later falling into a spiral of drug use, arrests and scandals. All this is just in the pre-credits prologue.

The main part of the movie revolves around John (Mark Wahlberg), now a 35-year-old slacker who spends most of his time avoiding work and getting stoned with Ted (a computer-generated character voiced by McFarlane). John lives with his longtime girlfriend, Lori (played by Mila Kunis, who voices the annoying Meg on "Family Guy"), who?s starting to worry that John?s life is stagnating because of Ted?s party-hearty attitude.

McFarlane ? co-writing with "Family Guy" cohorts Alec Sulkin and Wellesley Wild ? draws upon a deep knowledge of pop-culture references and gives the foul-mouthed Ted an offensiveness that leaves no group untouched. (For example: When Ted is forced to get a supermarket job, he laments about his former celebrity status, "This is how the cast of ?Diff?rent Strokes? feels every hour. The living ones, I mean.")

Not every moment of "Ted" works. McFarlane is less than kind to female characters, depicting them as sluts or drips. (Kunis is pigeon-holed in the second category, as her Meg character on "Family Guy" has long been.) He also has a habit of recycling jokes, and his voicing of Ted recalls a bit too closely his "Family Guy" character Peter Griffin. There?s a disturbing subplot involving a creepy stalker (Giovanni Ribisi) who covets Ted.

But McFarlane throws a lot of jokes on the screen, and a fair percentage of them stick, and there?s a surprising sweetness to John and Ted?s friendship. "Ted" is likely to join the ranks of raunchy cult-classic comedies ? alongside "Airplane!" and "Caddyshack" ? that future Johns and Teds will sit at home and watch for years to come, possibly while getting high.

Yakubu: Heading for China

Yakubu: Heading for China

Bet with SkyBet? ?10 completely free bet

Yakubu Aiyegbeni has agreed a switch to Chinese outfit Guangzhou Fuli, bringing to an end his time with Blackburn Rovers.

The 29-year-old striker becomes the latest high-profile figure to head for the Far East, following Didier Drogba and Nicolas Anelka's arrival at Shanghai Shenhua.

Yakubu is looking forward to experiencing a different culture and footballing way of life after nine years in England with Portsmouth, Middlesbrough, Everton, Leicester City (loan) and Blackburn.

"There were many clubs interested according to the media, but the only people who made direct contact have been Guangzhou R&F," he said.

"Many will ask why China? The truth is there is not much to prove after scoring almost a century of goals in the (Premier) league - considered as one of the best in the world.

"I thank Blackburn Rovers, the fans, fellow players for making my one season there seem like a decade.

"I appreciate their support and I hope the club will come back again into the top-flight as soon as possible."

Yakubu had been looking to leave Blackburn following their relegation out of the Premier League last season and insists money played no part in his decision to head for China.

"Money cannot buy you happiness and what I have found from the people in China is love, happiness, sincerity and warmth and I can't wait to get started here," he said.

"They are starting an unbelievable football programme here and it's nice to be a part of it."

Rural Wisconsin Retirement House - Fine Homebuilding

An Organic Farming Operation

The household owners have been engaged in organic farming for many years, primarily raising grassfed black Angus on their blufftop farm located in rural Coon Valley, Wisconsin. About two years ago, they put together a plan to maintain the farmland's acreage for pasture-based farming by entering into a conservation easement entrusted to Mississippi Valley Conservancy, a locally based non-profit trust working in the driftless area. The planning process also involved transferring ownership of the farmstead home and buildings to their grandson and his family and conceptualizing plans to build a small retirement home for themselves elsewhere on the property. Things had progressed to that stage when they contacted us to see if we might be interested in assisting them with the retirement home project. It was the dead of winter. We got started immediately.

Site Plan and Initial Design Requirements

An initial site requirement was to maintain a comfortable distance between the original farmstead and the new retirement house thereby assuring space and privacy for both families. Secondly, the footprint for the new house and its surroundings needed to consume minimum acreage from the farm itself. A scenic view, preferably from the southern side of the house, was another site goal. Then we ended up in discussion about distance from the main road. Although a lengthy driveway to the new house would have opened up more site possibilities, such a roadway would not only have been costly to construct and maintain but would in itself have consumed a fair amount of farmland. Moreover a lengthy driveway seemed contrary to the new house goal of easy accessibility, especially given our typical winter snowfalls. Fortunately we identified several site possibilities that met all four goals. We all agreed that one site in particular was the best, located on a gentle slope just off the main road into the farm.

Initial design requirements for the house itself were pretty straightforward. All of the main living area had to be on one floor. Accessibility requirements also dictated there be no steps between the garage and the house floor levels, and no interior curbs or floor barriers especially in the bathroom. The structure was to be built on a slab floor with internal hydronic radiant heating. The gently sloping site allowed us to push the north side of the structure into the hillside allowing just enough height for a ribbon of awning windows under the roof line in the north facing rooms. The public living/dining and kitchen areas were to be open, well lighted from a band of large south facing casement windows and partially open to a cathedral ceiling and loft space above. Private spaces were to consist of a master bedroom, single bathroom, laundry room, small office, and a special loft space for grandchildren to stay and play. Total everyday first floor living area was to be modest, in the range of 1100 square feet. The garage was sized with a wide single garage door yet contained floor space sufficient to accommodate two small cars.

Roof Design

In this area the roof structure would normally be constructed with pre-fabricated trusses. However in this case roof trusses would have been problematical. True to a Prairie design we wanted a low hugging roofline, but also required a cathedral ceiling with adult headroom in the central portion of the loft. Utilization of parallel chord trusses to achieve the required internal space would have resulted in a considerably taller roofline. Consequently we went to a design utilizing conventional 2" x 12" rafters throughout the main structure. Then by dropping the ceiling in the entryway and central corridor and employing a rather unconventional roof slope of 7 1/2 to 12 we were able to optimize the total internal headroom while maintaining the structure's horizontal form factor. The roof itself was constructed first with a layer of OSB board applied to the rafters, then a continuous 1" layer of foam board, next 1 1/2" strapping applied over the foamboard directly above the rafters, another layer of OSB board, and finally a high grade roofing felt and asphalt shingles. Ventilation is achieved through soffit vents, upward air passage through the spaces between the strapping, and discharge at the peak.

Rainwater Collection

In the original plan, we provided for rainwater catchment from the north facing gable roof sections of the house and garage. Rainwater from that side of the roof would be directed into over-sized gutters and downspouts into an underground cistern. According to our calculations with a sufficiently large cistern this system would have been capable of meeting all domestic water needs, especially considering installation of new water conserving plumbing fixtures and appliances. However, projected water needs increased with added provision for garden irrigation and supplying a sizable water tank in the nearby pasture for livestock. Then too having experienced drought conditions the summer before, the decision was made to drill a deep well to meet domestic water needs. So the rainwater catchment system was retained but dedicated for irrigation and livestock needs only.

Loft Access

The initial plan called for a loft space accessible by ladder, a feature frequently pictured in design magazines. However further thought about safety and supervision of that space for children, and the notion of lugging a vacuum cleaner, play items, and the like up there on a ladder led to reconsideration in favor of a stairway. Although relatively late in the design process we were able to shoehorn a stairway partially above the entryway closet and the mechanical room. Addition of a stairway also opened up a now easily accessible large space for storage above the master bedroom. While the central portion of the loft has sufficient headroom for adults, the sloping ceiling extending all the way down to the floor achieves an intimacy and reduced scale making the space especially inviting for children.

Ceiling and LED Lighting

The ceiling in the entryway and central corridor, and perimeter of the living/dining room and kitchen was dropped to a height of 7' 2". This scale provided an increased sense of shelter and comfort. The interior perimeter soffit also provided a convenient location for mounting concealed indirect strip lighting. To date we had found LED lighting to be too anemic for such an application. But encouraged by a timely article in FHB No. 223 (p. 104) we ordered a sample of double density LED strip lighting. We were pleasantly surprised to find its light output to be even greater than we had anticipated. We liked it so much we ended up using six 5 meter reels mostly for upward directed lighting in the living/dining and kitchen perimeter soffits, but also for task lighting mounted within a dado routed into the underside of all the upper kitchen wall cabinets. Fortuitously we opted for the more costly dim-able quad output power supply for the living/dining area. The light output from the 60 foot perimeter there was so great that installation of a full range dimmer switch proved well worth it to adjust the light intensity for conditions and activities.

Hardwood Trim and Cabinets

The owners wanted natural indigenous hardwood trim. Early in the process we purchased about 1000 bdf of kiln dried red oak directly from a sawmill located not far away on the Wisconsin River. We designed our own version of Prairie style trim and had it milled at a local cabinet shop.?Fenestrations and doors are banded with horizontal casing.?The upper casing extends?around the perimeter of the?public space?interrupted only by the chimney firewall.?The top edge of the horizontal casing is set about one inch below?the ceiling to emphasize the ceiling space and allow for any?minor variations between top of the window jambs and the ceiling.?The formal?base trim is a generous 5 1/2" wide with a raised panel profile milled on the top edge We had the cabinet shop build the larger pantry and base cabinets. We built all the wall cabinets and cabinet doors. Cabinet doors are straightforward Mission style frame and panel construction with solid re-sawn and book-matched panels made up from the widest and best figured quartersawn stock. With no conventional basement we wanted to make sure there was ample built-in cabinet space for everyday accessible storage. In the kitchen we installed deep floor-to-ceiling pantry cabinets and three sets of wide all-drawer base units. We flanked one side of the twelve foot long entryway with cabinets, half with a narrow granite counter-top and the remainder wall cabinets extend from floor to ceiling. The contractor's crew did a superb job of installing the trim. Although it looks deceptively simple, this application of trim requires careful attention to detail even including placement of windows and doors, all of which must line up. The harmony and abundance of natural woodwork together with the off-white walls provides an ideal backdrop for display of the owners' Japanese prints acquired decades ago when they lived in Japan. They are very pleased with the resulting sense of warmth and "naturalness" of the woodwork.

HVAC Overkill

For comfort and efficiency the owners decided upon radiant floor heating from the beginning. However, long accustomed to heating with a wood-burning stove, they also specified a small but highly efficient Morso wood stove set up for operation with outside combustion air. Initial thoughts about air conditioning were rather ambivalent, so we included a sizable casement window in each gable end of the loft near the peak to facilitate natural ventilation. But thoughts about air conditioning changed after experiencing one of the hottest summers on record last year. So we added a small central air conditioner with a supply trunk which ran nicely through the full living area above the ceiling in the loft area above. The HVAC contractor was still concerned about the "control-ability" of the radiant floor system during late fall and early spring, so recommended adding an auxiliary hot water coil in the air handler. Especially given the modest size and tight construction all of this no doubt ended up in overkill. But to this point, they sure are happy both from the standpoint of comfort and energy efficiency.?

Is Amazon Really Hiding Highly Discounted Products From You?

Certainly Amazon does contain many products that are highly discounted ? sometimes as much as 99%, with many products discounted between 80% ? 99%? But are these items presented to you when you search the Amazon websites, or are they hidden away from view?

Amazon itself denies this accusation saying that all products they stock, not matter what discount they may carry or profit margin they may yield, can be seen on the Amazon websites.

Amazon Bargain Hunting!

Independent experiments have been undertaken to see if there is any truth to the ?Amazon hidden bargain? theory. I carried out such an experiment myself recently searching Amazon.com for a variety of highly discounted products that I knew were lurking somewhere within the website, and the results were interesting.

Without going into details in this article, the general conclusion I reached was that many of the products I was searching for did not show in the first 15 pages of Amazon?s search results.

Of course the search results you get at Amazon is very much dependent on the search term you use, and which department of Amazon you restrict your search to (if any): the more specific the search term, the more likely the product you are searching for will be seen in the search results.

Of course, many people searching Amazon will be using generic search terms such as ?men?s watch? rather than say ?Invicta Men?s 1461 Vintage Collection Riveted Leather Strap Brown Dial Watch?. If you use the first generic search term ?men?s watch? you are unlikely to be presented with the highly discounted product the second search term actually is! But when you do such a search you don?t know that the ?Invicta Men?s 1461 Vintage Collection Riveted Leather Strap Brown Dial Watch? is discounted 93% off normal list price so you are not likely to use such a specific search term!

Conclusion

Amazon may not be ?hiding? the real bargains it contains on purpose, but from my experience because of the way Amazon works it can take a long time and some luck and juggling of search terms and departments to find them!

For this reason, if you really want to find the bargains on Amazon it is a good idea to use one of the ?Amazon Discount Finder? websites that exist out there now that can pre-filter the products for you. This is a strategy that saves time as well as money. Search on ?amazon discount finder? or similar term to locate these websites.

It is definitely a better way to proceed when looking for reasonable products that you need for presents for Christmas, birthdays, anniversaries, weddings and similar occasions where you need a quality item but want it at a great price.

Discover the ?hidden? bargains and massively discounted products available now on Amazon.com at author Lee Gillett?s website ?The Amazing Bargain Store? at http://www.AmazingBargainStore.com

Father of slain gay teen: 'Justice will be served'

A makeshift memorial was set up near the site in Portland, Tex., where a couple found Mollie Judith Olgin, 19, and Mary Kristene Chapa, 18, after they were shot last week.

Updated at 6:45 p.m. ET: The father of a young woman who was shot along with her girlfriend last week in a South Texas park is mourning the loss of his ?guardian angel,? telling a local television station that ?justice will be served? in the case.

Mario Olgin?s daughter, Mollie, 19, and her girlfriend, Mary Kristene Chapa, were found in a grassy area of the park by a couple Saturday morning with gunshot wounds to the head, Portland, Texas, Police Chief Randy Wright has said. Olgin, originally from nearby Ingleside but recently living in Corpus Christi, died; Chapa, of Sinton, was rushed to an area hospital where she is making an ?amazing? recovery in the intensive care unit, her brother told NBC Latino.

The couple had planned to spend some time in the park before going to see a movie, Olgin told kiiitv.com on Tuesday. When his daughter, a first-year college student who wanted to become a psychologist, didn?t show up for work on Saturday, Olgin said he knew something was wrong.

?It was not like Mollie. ? If she had some place to be she was going to be there,? he said. ?I immediately had bad feelings (about) it.?

Wright said police had recovered a bullet casing from a large-caliber gun at the scene, leading investigators to believe the shootings occurred where the pair was found, but they haven?t found the weapon. Two witnesses said they heard what could have been gunshots or firecrackers just before midnight last Friday but did not report it at the time, he said.

A motive had not been established, he said in the statement.

"Information from family and friends indicates that Mollie and Mary were engaged in a same-sex relationship. However, there is no current evidence to indicate the attacks were motivated by that relationship," he said.

Wright told msnbc.com on Monday that: ?It appears as if ? this was not just a random attack but that?s something that we really have to develop over time.?

Police are investigating the shooting of two teenage girls in a same-sex relationship in a small Texas community along the Gulf of Mexico. KRIS reporter Lindsay Curtis has the story.

Because of her medical condition, Chapa has not been formally interviewed about what happened, he said.

Chapa?s brother, Hilario, said that his sister was making physical progress on the right side of her body but doctors were awaiting a response from the left. She was able to communicate via sign language.

?The doctors say it?s too early, no one is using the word ?paralyzed,?? he told NBC Latino. ?They say we should be so happy with her progress after three or four days. She?s very strong. She survived a very tough ordeal but her recovery is coming in strides and ?impressing everybody.?

He was hesitant to share many details about the search for a suspect.

?We don?t know who did this to her, she hasn?t given us a name,? he said. ?We?re under the impression she doesn?t know who did it. We don?t know if it?s a hate crime.?

The Texas Rangers have joined the investigation, which is being led by the Portland Police.

?We offered our assistance and they accepted and we have been actively involved in the investigation since Sunday," Tom Vinger, spokesman for Texas Department of Public Safety, wrote to msnbc.com in an email.

The park, a nature area with some parts overgrown and no lights, was often frequented by visitors during the day, but not at night. It is located along a bluff overlooking a bay, Wright said, with some homes situated nearby.

Rainbow ribbons, messages, flowers and cut-out hearts were left near the site in Portland, Tex., where a couple found Mollie Judith Olgin, 19, and Mary Kristene Chapa, 18, after they were shot.

?We?re not really sure how they got to the point that they were found,? he said. ?It is a scenic overlook with a wooden deck and there is a place at the edge of the deck where you can actually go down a very steep incline into a grassy area that leads down to the shoreline, and that?s where they were found.?

The crime rate is low in Portland, north of Corpus Christi on the Gulf of Mexico, Wright said. The last homicide occurred two years ago.

The couple?s friends and well-wishers placed rainbow ribbons, goodbye messages, flowers and cut-out hearts on Sunday around the site where Olgin and Chapa were found. On Friday, a candlelight vigil and walk will be held for them.

Frank Reyna, a 19-year-old university student, said he grew up with Chapa and met Olgin his sophomore year of high school. He described Chapa as an athlete who played softball, and said Olgin, a student at a nearby university, was focused on academics but also was a big joker. He last saw them together at a local coffee shop in May, which was the first time he saw them out as a couple.

?It?s something that I think all of us are going to carry with us for a while,? Reyna told msnbc.com. ?It?s going to take a while to get past this, the idea that there is somebody still out there that did this to these two amazing, beautiful people, and that they?re walking free right now.?

Friends said the pair had been together since mid-February.

The couple?s relationship ?was a readily accepted thing,? Reyna added, and was not what their friends focused on.

?We focused on their personalities and how they got along with everybody else ? their kindheartedness and their ability to just make other people smile and make each other smile,? he said. ?We didn?t care ? what they were, it?s who they were.?

Jillian Manuel, 20, who used to work with Olgin, said it was hard to return to the park on the weekend knowing what had happened there. She went to help create the makeshift memorial, where friends shared stories and tears, and to check the scene, where she recalled the difficulty of watching Olgin?s car get towed.

?We?re ? hoping to kind of just remember Molly, remember her and just share our memories,? Manuel said of their planned vigil. ?And then ? send off prayers for Christine and just celebrate them.?

The family will hold a memorial on Friday before the candlelight vigil and walk. Olgin welcomed the outpouring of support in the wake of his daughter?s death.

?She was happy,? he told kiiitv.com. ?She didn?t need for her life to end the way it did. Justice will be served.?

A committee of university presidents approved a plan for a four-team college football playoff, starting in 2014.

Here's what you need to know about the new postseason format put together by the commissioners of the 11 major college football conferences and Notre Dame's athletic director.

HOW WILL THE TEAMS BE CHOSEN? A selection committee will pick the four teams, using guidelines such as strength of schedule, head-to-head results and won-loss record, after the regular season. The committee will give preference to conference champions. The makeup of the committee is to be determined, but it will likely be about 20 conference commissioners and college athletic directors.

WHERE WILL THE GAMES BE PLAYED? The two semifinals will rotate among six sites. The current BCS games are the Rose Bowl (Pasadena, Calif.), Sugar Bowl (New Orleans), Fiesta Bowl (Glendale, Ariz.) and Orange Bowl (Miami). The Cotton Bowl, now played at the state-of-the-art Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas, has to be considered a front-runner to land one of the other two spots. Candidates for the other one? Try Atlanta and Jacksonville, Fla.

The championship game will become college football's Super Bowl. Any city can bid on it, even ones that host the semifinals and those that have not been traditional bowl sites. Expect most to be played in dome stadiums or warm weather sites.

WHEN WILL THE GAMES BE PLAYED? The semifinals will be played on Dec. 31 and/or Jan. 1. College football used to own New Year's Day. The Bowl Championship Series got away from that. The leaders of the sport want to reclaim that day. The championship game will always be played on the first Monday that is at least six days after the semifinals. The first "Championship Monday" is Jan. 12, 2015.

WILL THIS PUT AN END TO THE CONTROVERSY? No. Doubling the field from two teams to four alleviates some of the problems that the Bowl Championship Series couldn't solve. There will still be plenty of complaining, but it will come from teams No. 5, 6 and 7, instead of Nos. 3 and 4. That's better. The farther down you go in the rankings, the weaker the arguments get for inclusion. But there are plenty of people out there now that believe four is not nearly enough.

HOW MUCH? Conservative estimates have the television right to the new playoff system being worth at least double what the BCS was worth. That means $300 million easy, probably more like $400 or $500. How it gets divided among the conferences is still to be finalized, though criteria has been set up:

? On-field success

? Teams' expenses

? Marketplace factors

? Academic performance of student-athletes

In short the five power conferences (SEC, Big Ten, Big 12, ACC and Pac-12) will get more than the others. The Big East no longer will get a big share, but how much smaller will it be?

HOW SOON AND FOR HOW LONG? The four-team playoff will start in the 2014 season because the current TV deals have already locked the Bowl Championship Series in for two more years. The next round of TV deals will be for 12 years. Those negotiations will begin in the fall. The 12-year deal accomplishes two goals for the commissioners:

1) They don't want to deal with this every four years the way they have been.

2) It keeps the playoff from expanding for 12 years.

WILL IT GROW EVENTUALLY? No doubt. It will be successful, so why not have more of a good thing. Also, many if not all of the people who put this thing together will have moved on when it's time to come up with another plan. College football is moving away from the current bowl system, in which it farms out its postseason to third parties. As a new structure evolves and conferences continue to realign, there is no reason to think the playoff will continue to have only four teams.

TOLUCA, Mexico (Reuters) - Mexico's presidential front-runner Enrique Pena Nieto scented victory as he wrapped up his campaign on Wednesday with polls showing he should easily win the weekend election and put the country's old rulers back in power.

Voters elect a new president on Sunday and many are eager for the next government to fire up an underperforming economy and end rampant violence by drug gangs, sore points that have eroded confidence in the ruling National Action Party, or PAN.

Pena Nieto is running for the opposition Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), which laid the foundations of modern Mexico and ruled for most of the 20th century but is widely remembered for its corruption and suppression of dissent.

The PRI was ousted by the conservative PAN in a 2000 election, but has bounced back in the last few years, insisting it has learned from its mistakes and swinging the full might of its formidable party machinery behind the telegenic Pena Nieto.

The PAN raised high hopes when it came to power, but annual economic growth averaged barely 2 percent under its two governments and it has failed to contain spiraling criminal violence, crippling its hopes of a third term.

"We want a country that lives in peace, is calm and is safe," Pena Nieto, 45, told tens of thousands of supporters in the central city of Toluca on the last day of campaigning.

Three polls published on Wednesday all showed him with a double-digit lead over his rivals.

Wearing red baseball caps and red and white T-shirts handed out by the party, supporters shouted "Presidente, Presidente" as Pena Nieto took the stage in Toluca. But the rally was otherwise largely subdued.

"We have to give the PRI another chance, the PAN has shown it was not up to the job," said Ignacia Rodriguez, 50, a street vendor in Toluca. "They've failed the test."

Pena Nieto's closest rival is leftist candidate Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, a former mayor of Mexico City who narrowly lost the 2006 election to President Felipe Calderon and then contested the results, staging months of protests that unnerved investors in Latin America's second-largest economy.

He has recently stirred up fears of new unrest, accusing the PRI of trying to rig the vote, although any protests may be short-lived if Pena Nieto wins by a wide margin.

The prospect of that victory fills some Mexicans with fear that the country is heading back towards a state dominated by one party.

"Lopez Obrador is the only option not to return to a dictatorship," said drama student Mezli Gutierrez, 24, as she joined thousands marching to a closing rally in Mexico City's main square. "The PRI is a completely rotten system."

PAN candidate Josefina Vazquez Mota told supporters at her final campaign rally near Mexico's second city Guadalajara that voters needed to be mindful of foul play on Sunday.

"I invite you all to be election observers, so no-one's vote is manipulated and no-one feels pressured," she said.

NEW PRI

Pena Nieto underlined his commitment to change in an interview published on Wednesday in the newspaper El Universal.

"There is a new PRI ... It's the others who have not changed. They are living in the past," he said. "But the PRI never left. It has lost and won, competed democratically and understood change."

Calderon's struggles with the sputtering economy have been exacerbated by the PAN's lack of a majority in Congress.

He has been unable to push through many of his planned reforms due to opposition from the PRI and other parties, and the brutality of drug war violence has eroded his standing.

Rampant violence between drug cartels and their clashes with the state has claimed more than 55,000 lives since 2007.

Calderon sent in the armed forces to bring the gangs to heel soon after taking office in December 2006, but despite capturing or killing many top bosses, the bloodshed has escalated.

Pena Nieto is planning to boost growth with reforms similar to those his party helped thwart in Congress under Calderon.

He has pledged to overhaul the tax system and open up state oil monopoly Pemex to more private investment in exploration, refining and production, breaking with traditions of the PRI, which nationalized Mexico's oil industry in 1938.

Recent polls suggest the PRI could win a working majority in both the Senate and lower house of Congress.

But even if he has the majorities, Pena Nieto faces a challenge to shake up Pemex, which is struggling with a heavy tax burden, bloated workforce and oil fields in decline.

A close result would raise the risk of demonstrations, particularly as Lopez Obrador has the support of a newly emerged student movement that shook up the campaign with huge rallies.

In Mexico City, banners peppered the main thoroughfare, which Lopez Obrador brought to a standstill with post-election protests six years ago, reading: "I remember the devaluations, the killings, the corruption. Don't vote for the PRI."

Some protesters vowed to take the streets again if Lopez Obrador issues a rallying call.

Mexican financial markets have already factored in a Pena Nieto win, so a close finish that puts his mandate and economic reforms at risk could spook investors and hit asset prices.

The final three polls of the campaign gave the PRI candidate a lead of between 10 and 17 points over Lopez Obrador with the PAN's Josefina Vazquez Mota trailing in third.

They were conducted between June 21 and 25 using samples of 1,200 to 2,000 eligible voters. The margin of error for the polls was 2.9 percentage points or lower.

Sandberg is first woman on Facebook?s board

By msnbc.com staff

Facebook has named Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg to its board of directors, making her the first woman on the company?s board, which includes seven men.

Sandberg joined Facebook in 2008 and she has played a key role in leading the social network as it has moved to become a public company with a $16 billion IPO in mid-May.

Her promotion comes as Facebook, a company started in a Harvard dorm room in 2004, seeks to promote a more mature image

The composition of Facebook?s board attracted the attention of the California State Teachers' Retirement System, the second-largest largest pension fund in the United States, which in the past has criticized its lack of diversity.

It applauded Sandberg's promotion to the Facebook board as a good first step toward greater corporate leadership diversity, but also urged the social network to ?continue diversifying the board toward greater independence and representation of the Company's user base.?

(AP) ? Archaeologists in Greece's second-largest city have uncovered a 70-meter (230-foot) section of an ancient road built by the Romans that was the city's main travel artery nearly 2,000 years ago.

The marble-paved road was unearthed during excavations for Thessaloniki's new subway system, which is due to be completed in four years. The road in the northern port city will be raised to be put on permanent display when the metro opens in 2016.

The excavation site was shown to the public on Monday, when details of the permanent display project were also announced. Several of the large marble paving stones were etched with children's board games, while others were marked by horse-drawn cart wheels.

Also discovered at the site were remains of tools and lamps, as well as the bases of marble columns.

Viki Tzanakouli, an archaeologist working on the project, told The Associated Press the Roman road was about 1,800 years old, while remains of an older road built by the ancient Greeks 500 years earlier were found underneath it.

"We have found roads on top of each other, revealing the city's history over the centuries," Tzanakouli said. "The ancient road, and side roads perpendicular to it appear to closely follow modern roads in the city today."

About 7 meters (23 feet) below ground in the center of the city, the ancient road follows in roughly the same direction as the city's modern Egnatia Avenue.

The subway works, started in 2006, present a rare opportunity for archaeologists to explore under the densely populated city ? but have also caused years of delays for the project.

In 2008, workers on the Thessaloniki metro discovered more than 1,000 graves, some filled with treasure. The graves were of different shapes and sizes, and some contained jewelry, coins or other pieces of art.

A massive excavation project also took place during the 1990s in the capital, Athens, before the city's new metro system opened in 2000.

Thessaloniki's new subway is already four years behind schedule, due to the excavation work as well as Greece's financial crisis. Thirteen stations will operate initially, before a 10-station extension is added later.
