Mars: Curiosity's DAN instrument suggests Gale Crater drier than expected

ScienceDaily (Sep. 28, 2012) ? Preliminary data from the Curiosity Mars Science Laboratory, presented at the European Planetary Science Conference on 28 September, indicate that the Gale Crater landing site might be drier than expected.

The Curiosity rover is designed to carry out research into whether Mars was ever able to support life, and a key element of this search is the hunt for water. Although Mars has many features on its surface that suggest a distant past in which the planet had abundant liquid water in the form of rivers and lakes, the only water known to be abundant on Mars today is frozen, embedded in the soil, and in large ice caps at both poles.

The Dynamic Albedo of Neutrons (DAN) instrument on board Curiosity is designed to detect the location and abundance of water thanks to the way hydrogen (one of water's components) reflects neutrons. When neutrons hit heavy particles, they bounce off with little loss in energy, but when they hit hydrogen atoms (which are much lighter and have approximately the same mass as neutrons), they lose half of their energy.

The DAN instrument works by firing a pulse of neutrons at the ground beneath the rover and detecting the way it is reflected. The intensity of the reflection depends on the proportion of water in the ground, while the time the pulse takes to reach the detector is a function of the depth at which the water is located.

"The prediction based on previous measurements using the Mars Odyssey orbiter was that the soil in Gale Crater would be around 6% water. But the preliminary results from Curiosity show only a fraction of this," said Maxim Mokrousov (Russian Space Research Institute), the lead designer of the instrument.

One possible explanation of the discrepancy lies in the variability of water content across the surface of Mars. There are large-scale variations, with polar regions in particular having high abundances of water, but also substantial local differences even within individual regions on Mars.

The Mars Odyssey spacecraft is only able to measure water abundance for an area around 300 by 300 kilometres -- it cannot make high resolution maps. It may therefore be that Odyssey's figure for Gale Crater is an accurate (but somewhat misleading) average of significantly varying hydrogen abundances in different parts the crater.

Indeed, over the small distance that the rover has already covered, DAN has observed variations in the detector counting rates that may indicate different levels of hydrogen in the ground, hinting that this is likely to be the case.

Curiosity's ability to probe the water content in the martian soil in specific locations, rather than averages of broad regions, allows for a far more precise and detailed understanding of the distribution of water ice on Mars.

(AP) ? Arnold Schwarzenegger says his wife, Maria Shriver, was told to "snap out of it" by her mother for her attempts to persuade him against running for California governor in 2003, a conversation that ultimately opened the door to his successful candidacy.

Eunice Shriver told her daughter that her husband would be "angry for the rest of his life" if she stopped his ambitions, Schwarzenegger writes in his new autobiography, "Total Recall: My Unbelievably True Life Story."

The former governor says in the book that he had decided against running to recall Gov. Gray Davis after his wife implored him not to for the sake of their family. Maria Shriver announced his decision to their four children.

But he writes that when Maria Shriver told her mother about her efforts to thwart Schwarzenegger's political ambitions, Eunice told her daughter that women in their family "always support the men when they want to do something." Schwarzenegger says he didn't know about the conversation at the time, but learned of it later.

Maria Shriver then softened her stance, paving the way for Schwarzenegger to announce his candidacy on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno," where he says he felt most comfortable.

The announcement came after a week of wavering. Schwarzenegger says before he headed to the TV appearance, his wife handed him two pieces of paper with talking points she had written: one in case he decided to run, another in case he decided not to.

He writes that Shriver went on to become a key ally and adviser to his campaign and eventual governorship.

Schwarzenegger has often said that Maria's mother and her father, Sargent Shriver, were essential to his eventual decision to seek public office, and the most "extraordinary human beings I've ever met." But he also writes in the book that he often teased his wife that the close-knit Democratic Kennedy clan was "like a bunch of clones" because there was such conformity among them.

A spokesman for Shriver, Matthew DiGirolamo, declined to comment on the contents of the book.

"Total Recall" will officially be published next week. The Associated Press purchased an early copy.

The book is part of an effort by the onetime "Mr. Universe" and Hollywood action star to rebrand himself after leaving office with a mixed record and subsequent embarrassing revelations about a fling he had with the family's housekeeper. Schwarzenegger, who fathered a son with the housekeeper, says he also let the boy down.

Schwarzenegger, 65, said he avoided telling his wife for years about the boy, who is now a teenager, even when Shriver asked him, partly because of his longtime penchant for secrecy, and his fear that the news would become public and undermine his political career. He told his wife in January 2011, when she confronted him the day after he left office.

In an interview with "60 Minutes" scheduled to air Sunday, Schwarzenegger said having sex with his housekeeper was "the stupidest thing" he ever did to his now-estranged wife and caused great pain to her and their four children. CBS aired excerpts of the interview Friday.

"I think it was the stupidest thing I've done in the whole relationship. It was terrible. I inflicted tremendous pain on Maria and unbelievable pain on the kids," Schwarzenegger tells "60 Minutes."

Schwarzenegger says he also let down the son he fathered with the housekeeper.

Shriver filed for divorce in July.

In his book, the usually ebullient Schwarzenegger admits to some loneliness, even though he packed his schedule with speeches, projects and movie-making after Shriver and the children moved out of the house. He said his career had been fun for 30 years because he shared it with Maria.

They had done everything together, he writes.

The former GOP governor also writes about a 2003 White House meeting with Karl Rove in which the top GOP strategist told him the recall would not happen and instead introduced the actor to then-national security adviser Condoleezza Rice as his pick to run for California governor in 2006.

Schwarzenegger felt snubbed.

He asks, "How could Rove have been so wrong?"

Rove's office said he was traveling Friday and could not be reached for comment.

Rice's chief of staff at Stanford University, Georgia Godfrey, said Rice cannot recall "any conversation on this subject."

"She has stated many times in the past that she has no desire to run for public office and those sentiments have still not changed," Godfrey said in a statement emailed to The Associated Press.

AP Interview: Iran opposition chief see rebirth

AUVERS-SUR-OISE, France (AP) ? The leader of an Iranian militant group that was taken off the U.S. terror list on Friday says the move will change her group's "balance of power" with the world ? predicting a higher profile in politics, fundraising and diplomacy as well as increased anti-regime activity in Iran.

The U.S. State Department said the People's Mujahedeen of Iran (MEK) hasn't committed terror for more than a decade. The decision means that effective immediately, any assets the group has in the United States are unblocked and Americans are permitted to do business with the organization.

Maryam Rajavi, the Paris-based head of the exiled opposition group, said in a rare interview that she hopes the organization can now have the ear of the world's diplomats to help bolster its bid to overthrow Iran's clerical regime. She stressed that its goal was to replace the Islamic Republic with a democratic government.

Rajavi praised the "courage" of U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton for what MEK believes was a long overdue decision. A court order had given Clinton until Oct. 1 to act. The group was removed from the European Union's terrorist list in 2009.

"It now has become evident for everyone that these (terror) allegations were untrue," she said. "This is a movement for freedom and democracy in Iran."

The Iranian regime is likely to be furious at the U.S. decision to delist MEK ? for years the only armed exile opposition group. The group, which began as a guerrilla movement fighting Shah Mohammed Reza Pahlavi, helped overthrow the monarch in 1979 then quickly fell out with the Islamic Republic's first leader, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini.

MEK later teamed up with Iraq to battle Iran in an eight-year war in the 1980s, then from its Iraqi base continued military action against neighboring Iran.

A senior State Department official said Washington does not view the group as an opposition movement that can promote democratic values in Iran. The official briefed reporters on condition of anonymity because he wasn't authorized to speak publicly on the matter.

"They are not part of our picture in terms of the future of Iran," the official said.

Still, the U.S. credited the group's 3,000-plus members at a paramilitary base near Iraq's border with Iran with a peaceful departure to another camp, a major step in their eventual departure from Iraq.

The United States contends the group was responsible for the killing of several American military officials and defense contractors in the 1970s, carrying out attacks on Iran from its base in Iraq.

Rajavi, 58, wore what has become a trademark headscarf among MEK women during the interview Friday at MEK's headquarters in the leafy town of Auvers-Sur-Oise north of Paris. She denied claims by critics that MEK has all the earmarks of a cult, blaming Iran for such allegations.

"All the energy and potential of our movement were chained" during the 15 years that MEK was listed by the United States as a terrorist organization, she said, speaking in French as well as the Iranian language of Farsi through a translator.

At its headquarters, the group was preparing for a jubilant fete on Saturday, plastering walls on the street with red drapes and photographs of "martyrs," as it refers to members who have been killed.

"The diplomatic scene will be completely different" because the group's status as a pariah will evaporate, Rajavi said, reiterating MEK's long-standing denial of terrorism.

But, she said, "the most important impact ... will be seen inside Iran."

"The balance of power, the balance of power is going to change. For example, the first message for the Iranian people will be they won't fear increasing their activity and increasing their demonstrations," she said. The fear "will evaporate ... and that will lead to the expansion of anti-regime activities within Iran."

With a clean bill of health in the West, the Iranian regime "will no longer have the excuse" of acting against an organization deemed terrorist by the United States.

Mujahedeen, protected in Iraq under dictator Saddam Hussein, were disarmed after the 2003 U.S. invasion of Iraq and are disliked by the new Iraqi government, dominated by Shiite Muslims like those in Iran.

The United States had insisted the MEK's members leave Camp Ashraf, their home in Iraq, as a condition for removal from the terrorist list. All but several hundred militants are now located in Camp Liberty, a former U.S. base outside Baghdad, looking for placement in third countries.

Among those transferred to Camp Liberty were Rajavi's 30-year-old daughter and her 32-year-old son, she said.

A veil of mystery has long surrounded the group, not the least over the whereabouts of its main founder, Massoud Rajavi, who married Maryam and, though not seen since at least 2003, continues as its co-leader.

There has been speculation that he is dead. Rajavi said Friday he is alive but would not say where he is living.

Family: Minneapolis gunman suffered mental illness

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) ? The family of the man who killed four people at a Minneapolis sign company says he struggled for years with mental illness.

Police said Friday that Andrew J. Engeldinger of Minneapolis opened fire at Accent Signage Systems just hours after being let go from the company Thursday morning.

His family says in a statement released through the National Alliance on Mental Illness that they aren't trying to excuse Engeldinger's actions, but perhaps partially explain them.

Alliance director Sue Abderholden says the family had approached the group for help about two years ago. That's about when Engeldinger's uncle says his nephew broke off contact with his family.

Abderholden says Engeldinger's parents took a class on understanding and dealing with mental illness. But she says they couldn't convince Engeldinger to seek help.

Press Release

Recreational boating and fishing community guardedly optimistic but firm on need for General Management Plan changes

WASHINGTON, D.C., September 27, 2012 ? Today, a coalition of national boating and fishing organizations, concerned with the long term health of and public access to Florida?s Biscayne National Park, sent a letter expressing appreciation for recent positive steps in the development of a General Management Plan for the Park, but reiterated concerns about the potential to unnecessarily close large areas of the Park to the public.

The coalition, comprised of the American Sportfishing Association, Center for Coastal Conservation, Coastal Conservation Association, Congressional Sportsmen?s Foundation and the National Marine Manufacturers Association, is optimistic that a positive outcome is possible based on recent and ongoing discussions between the National Park Service and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission in an effort to resolve differences and develop joint solutions for the park?s management plan.

Recently, the National Park Service and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission released a joint agency statement which says, ?Both agencies made progress to resolve differences and develop joint solutions. Discussions focused on the long term goals the park is trying to accomplish, as well as an analysis of possible management strategies for the proposed Marine Reserve Zone.? Read the full statement here.

In August 2011 Biscayne National Park officials released a draft management plan that proposed to close up to 20 percent of the park?s waters to fishing. The park?s preferred alternative included a 10,000-acre marine reserve, or no-fishing zone, despite recommendations from stakeholders and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission that a marine reserve is overly restrictive. The coalition fully supports the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission?s longstanding position that less-restrictive management measures should be implemented in the park.

?As representatives of America?s leading recreational fishing and boating organizations, we are highly interested in the management of Biscayne National Park, one of the country?s largest urban recreational fishing and boating areas. Biscayne National Park is a jewel in the national park system and helps support Florida?s $19 billion recreational fishing and boating economy and the associated 250,000 jobs,? the coalition stated in its letter.

This summer the National Park Service and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission agreed to reengage in the General Management Plan development process.? The coalition is hopeful that discussions between the National Park Service and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission will result in a management plan that balances resource conservation with public access including adequate areas for fishing. However, the coalition is concerned that the recent statement indicates that a marine reserve zone remains in consideration as a possible management activity which would create excessive and unnecessary fishing and water access restrictions.

Coalition leaders offered these thoughts:

?

American Sportfishing Association

Mike Nussman, President and CEO

?The sportfishing and boating community recognizes that there are management challenges facing Biscayne National Park, but simply excluding the public from accessing this public resource is not the appropriate way to address these challenges,? said Mike Nussman, president and CEO, American Sportfishing Association. ?Unwarranted closures to public access will inevitably keep Americans from enjoying the great outdoors and diminish the economic benefit of sportfishing and boating to Florida?s economy.?

Center for Coastal Conservation

Jeff Angers, President

?The onerous fishing closures proposed by Biscayne National Park officials are the latest in a disturbing trend of the National Park Service disregarding the importance of providing access to sportsmen on our nation?s public lands and waters,? said Jeff Angers, president of the Center for Coastal Conservation. ?Park officials have the opportunity to steer this GMP process for Biscayne National Park in a fair, balanced direction; we urge them not to waste this opportunity.?

Coastal Conservation Association

Michael Kennedy,?Coastal Conservation Association Florida Chair Emeritus

?If the National Park Service?s goal is to improve the park?s fisheries and habitat, we firmly believe that there are other, less restrictive options that could effectively rebuild and sustain the park?s fisheries resources,? said Michael Kennedy,?Coastal Conservation Association Florida Chair Emeritus. ?The National Park Service should step back from the proposed marine reserve in the General Management Plan and continue to work with the FWC and local stakeholders to address these issues. Their proposed marine preserve is a fishery management tool which has no place in the GMP process. ?By slowing this process down and reviewing the variety of other tools available, we are confident that a plan can be reached that addresses the resource challenges in the park while still allowing the public to access the park?s waters.?

Congressional Sportsmen?s Foundation

Jeff Crane, President

?Sportsmen contribute $3 billion to natural resource conservation annually,? said Jeff Crane, president of the Congressional Sportsmen?s Foundation. ?Given the economic, social and conservation benefits of fishing, managers at Biscayne National Park should work to facilitate and promote recreational fishing access, not unnecessarily restrict it.?

National Marine Manufacturers Association

Thom Dammrich, President

?Biscayne National Park is one of the busiest and most popular recreational marine parks in the United States and its access helps promote the $19 billion in recreational boat and angling sales that add 250,000 related jobs to Florida?s economy,? said Thom Dammrich, president of the National Marine Manufacturers Association. ?Boaters, anglers, Florida residents and the outdoor recreation industry can?t afford to sit idly by as detrimental management stalls not only visitor access to one of country?s most enjoyed waterways, but the livelihood of hundreds of thousands of Floridians.?

Movie Review: Is Liberal Arts As Awful as Josh Radnor's Debut Film ...

The opening night film at this year?s Dallas International Film Festival, Liberal Arts? producer, Claude Dal Farra,?introduced the movie at the time with a question he posed to director Josh Radnor, ?Why do you want to make a feel good movie??

Liberal Arts?is, if nothing else, a feel good movie ? sweet, cute, and warm ? a romantic comedy best-served to under-35 significant others snuggled under blankets.?It is also a vast improvement over Radnor?s debut, Happythankyoumoreplease, in the simple fact that Radnor has grown more comfortable with his comedic instinct, and he tones down his inclination to pick and poke at his character?s psyches with boiled-down psycho-jabber.

Radnor plays Jesse, a 35-year-old university admissions counselor living in New York who is called back to his alma mater, a small college in rural Ohio (the movie was shot on the campus of Kenyon College), for the retirement party of his favorite?professor, Peter (Richard Jenkins). There he meets Zibby (Elizabeth Olsen), a pretty sophomore. Jesse and Zibby hit it off during the weekend, and before he returns to New York, Zibby gives him a classical music mix CD and invites him to write her the ?old fashioned? way, that is, on paper. Back in New York, the music begins to impact Jesse?s life in whimsical, often hilarious ways, and the couple?s letter correspondence blossoms into a relationship.

What is most appealing about?Liberal Arts?is its softly nostalgic longing for the sweet simplicity and intellectual?leisureliness?of collegiate life. We are most affected not through the babbling about books and poets, but in quirky ways Radnor works their influence into mood and feel of the film, overlaying the classical tracks and personifying the unchecked cerbreality in the diametrically opposed personae of two of the movie?s most enjoyable characters, Nat (Zac Efron) and Prof. Judith Fairfield (Allison Janney).

Nat is a stoner-ham, animated and spirited, speaking always in jarbled hippie-esse. Judith is a romantics professor whose been worn down by academia, becoming cold, cynical, and detached. We need both these characters in Liberal Arts?to prevent Radnor from losing himself in what drowned his first movie, all the bromidic soap-boxing, in which all motivations, self-understandings, aspirations, and philosophies are?hemmed-and-hawed, mumbled and jawed, with the same vainly self-conscious satisfaction of sporting a?tweed jacket on a gear-less bicycle.

There?s some of that in?Liberal Arts. Jenkins character is mostly reduced to kvetching, and, as in?Happythankyoumoreplease, Radnor?s Jesse needs some poor soul to inexplicably need him. That?s where John Magaro?s mopey and pointless Dean comes in.?But Olsen and Efron remain center stage.?Olsen?s Zibby has a wry spunk, a?knavish?spirit which goes a long way towards making the cutesy, hug-y stuff?bearable. And Efron?s natural sincerity is an asset. His Jesse is accused of being too soft-hearted, and we come to think so much of him, but that?s the point. He?s the kind of guy who frets about age, not mortality; affection, not love. ?Everything is going to be okay,? Nat tells Jesse, as if they were a duo washed-up in an AA meeting. And of course it is. There?s not that much at stake, and everyone has a good sense of humor.

Home Business Online ? What You Should Know

As people are discovering that it is often far less expensive to run an Internet business than it is to open a physical storefront, many new businesses are being created online. Moreover, many of these online businesses are being run from home. While this is often the most cost-effective way to start a new company, there are a number of things that people should consider before they start a home business online.

Success Rarely Happens Overnight

While there are some amazing success stories in which people decide to open an Internet shop from their home on a whim and find amazing and almost instant success, these stories are the exception, not the rule. Most Internet businesses require an enormous amount of time to be invested to become profitable. While there are many forms of free online advertising, these methods often take months to take affect and begin driving traffic to a website. This is why people should not depend on income from their online business until they have an established Internet presence.

Online Businesses Are Different From Regular Businesses

Many people do not fully grasp how different Internet businesses are from regular businesses with physical locations. Customers cannot be spoken to face-to-face, and products and services have to be sold to people who cannot touch or try them. Despite the fact that more and more people are shopping online, this is often a large hurdle to overcome. This is especially true for new online businesses that do not yet have a good reputation to fall back on.

Additionally, online marketing is a completely different animal from classic marketing. While it is usually far less expensive, the amount of research required for a successful search engine optimization (SEO) or pay-per-click (PPC) advertising campaign is enormous. If people are not using highly targeted advertising methods, they may drive large amounts of traffic to their website, but high traffic volume does not always translate into sales.

Being Tech Savvy Is Vital To Success

There are a number of things that people need to be experienced with and knowledgeable about to run a successful Internet business. To begin with, an online storefront needs to look professional and be easy for visitors to navigate. Most people will not purchase things from an online store that does not appear well-designed. It is also important that people who run online storefronts and process credit card transactions understand and can implement Internet security protocols. If transactions are not properly encrypted, it puts both the consumer?s and the website?s sensitive information at risk of being stolen by hackers.

People who run a home business online also need to keep up with current technological trends. For example, many people are beginning to use smartphones and tablets to do their Internet shopping. This means that more and more webmasters are starting to design websites for both mobile devices and regular computer browsers to ensure that they reach the largest number of people. If business owners do not keep up with these types of trends, they will not be able to stay competitive.

Finchers: What does innovation mean for the NHS?

Finchers: What does innovation mean for the NHS?

What does innovation mean for the NHS?

One of the things I love about twitter is the way that random tweets can spark a thought process that leads us to look at things with an alternative eye and challenges the hitherto underutilised recesses of my mind. The other day I noticed that Clare Gerada, Chair of the Royal College of General Practitioners tweeted ?Can someone give me a clear definition of innovation in the NHS??
I then had the luxury of a three hour train journey to Liverpool to contemplate this conundrum. Two diametrically opposite quotations sprang to mind. The first by Bill Gates 'Never before in history has innovation offered promise of so much to so many in so short a time' celebrates newness and change in all its glory. The second, by Coco Chanel 'Innovation! One cannot be forever innovating. I want to create classics'??honours the tried and tested.
Of course both of these quotes are applicable to the NHS in the 21st Century and maybe an appropriate combination of the old and the new is the Utopian vision we should aspire to achieve. Innovation in any context can be the excuse for a multitude of sins or a cacophony of excellence, but here is my personal view of where innovation should sit within the context of an NHS struggling with reform.
Innovation should NOT be?
The new buzz word! Yes the irony does not escape me. I have recently written a piece in Health Insurance magazine pleading for providers to stop using the ?I? word unless they really are coming up with something new. Whether it?s products, services, care pathways or medical techniques, please don?t say they are innovative unless they really are. The rehash and repackaging of old ideas achieves little and can cost much.
Change for change?s sake: Secretary of State for Health (whoever you are) please note. Change, such as radical restructure, rebranding or even just changing titles, must comply with measurable governance and provide a real opportunity for improvement. Change should not have a political expediency or be created on the basis of a need for heightened publicity.
Re-inventing the wheel: Same job, different title. Same function, different department. GP commissioners and disbanding? PCT?s. Enough said. Innovation in the NHS SHOULD be: Ways of working smarter: Needed at all stages of service delivery. This is innovation in the improved outcomes sense of the word? streamlining, service improvement, efficient pathway mapping, resource planning and possibly most important of all ? robust leadership.
Looking at sustainable?means of funding care: The public purse is not like the fabled magic rice bowl that refills on demand. Public private partnerships, patient contribution, increased taxation, improved use of voluntary resources ? all must be considered to meet growing cost of healthcare.
Creating a system to not only educate the public but to generate changes in behaviour: The western world seems to be on a path of self-destruction with unbelievably unhealthy habits, from smoking to drinking, over indulgence and lack of exercise. Changing this self-harming way of life would not only be innovative, it would prolong healthy life and save the NHS billions.
Research and Development: Whether this is funded by commercial enterprise, charities or academic institutions ? the unimaginable has already been achieved through innovation within the NHS and through strategic partnerships. Reform and cost cutting must not be allowed to halt this progress. A crystal clear definition of innovation in the NHS? Not possible. But I can have a stab at defining the golden rule that should apply to all such innovation. It works for clinical research, and applies to basic management techniques, service redesign and lean consulting. What is the true cost of a planned innovation (in financial and human terms) and what is the potential, measurable benefit? Is there sufficient evidence or theory to justify the risk associated with the innovation (clinical, emotional, physical or fiscal). If these questions produce unsatisfactory answers then you should only proceed, if at all, with caution.
And one last quotation ? accredited to ?anon? ?perhaps provides the closest to crystal clear I can manage..
?Innovation is not the same as reform.?

Scientists prevent heart failure in mice

ScienceDaily (Sep. 25, 2012) ? Cardiac stress -- for example, a heart attack or high blood pressure -- frequently leads to pathological heart growth and subsequently to heart failure. Two tiny RNA molecules play a key role in this detrimental development in mice, as researchers at the Hannover Medical School and the G?ttingen Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry have now discovered. When they inhibited one of those two specific molecules, they were able to protect the rodent against pathological heart growth and failure. With these findings, the scientists hope to be able to develop therapeutic approaches that can protect humans against heart failure.

Respiratory distress, fatigue, and attenuated performance are symptoms that can accompany heart failure. A reason for this can be an enlarged heart, a so-called cardiac hypertrophy. It may develop when the heart is subjected to permanent stress, for example, due to persistent high blood pressure or a valvular heart defect. In order to boost the pumping performance, the heart muscle cells enlarge -- a condition that frequently results in heart failure if not treated.

Two small RNA molecules tip the balance

A research team at the G?ttingen Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry and the Hannover Medical School discovered that two small RNA molecules play a key role in the growth of heart muscle cells: the microRNAs miR-212 and miR-132. The scientists had observed that these microRNAs are more prevalent in the cardiac muscle cells of mice suffering from cardiac hypertrophy. To determine the role that the two microRNAs play, the scientists bred genetically modified mice that had an abnormally large number of these molecules in their heart muscle cells. "These rodents developed cardiac hypertrophy and lived for only three to six months, whereas their healthy conspecifics had a normal healthy life-span of several years," explained Dr. Kamal Chowdhury, researcher in the Department of Molecular Cell Biology at the Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry. "For comparison, we also selectively switched off these microRNAs in other mice. These animals had a slightly smaller heart than their healthy conspecifics, but did not differ from them in behavior or life-span," continued the biologist. The crucial point is when the scientists subjected the hearts of these mice to stress by narrowing the aorta, the mice did not develop cardiac hypertrophy -- in contrast to normal mice.

A microRNA inhibitor protects mice against hypertrophy

The scientists were also able to protect normal mice against the disease. When they gave them a substance that selectively inhibits microRNA-132, no pathological cardiac growth occurred -- even when the hearts of these mice were subjected to stress. "Thus, for the first time ever, we have found a molecular approach for treating pathological cardiac growth and heart failure in mice," said the cardiologist Professor Dr. Dr. Thomas Thum, MD, Director of the Institute for Molecular and Translational Therapy Strategies (IMTTS) at the Hannover Medical School. With these findings, the researchers hope that they will be able to develop therapeutic approaches that can also protect humans against heart failure. "Such microRNA inhibitors, alone or in combination with conventional treatments, could represent a promising new therapeutic approach," said Thum.

"In mice with an overdosage of the two microRNAs in their heart muscle cells, the cellular 'recycling program' is curbed," explained Dr. Ahmet Ucar, who together with Shashi K. Gupta was responsible for the experiments. In this recycling process, the cell breaks down components that are damaged or no longer required and reuses their constituents -- a vital process that, for example, ensures the organism's survival under stress conditions. In mice without the microRNAs -212 and 132, this recycling program is more active than in their normal conspecifics. Conceivably, the reduced cellular recycling could be a cause of the observed cardiac hypertrophy.

New reasons to drink more tea | Baltic News Network - News from ...

We don?t typically think of tea as the type of green, leafy vegetable, but a new research suggests that the flavonoids extracted from tea leaves are similar to the beneficial phytochemicals found in fruits and vegetables.

The benefits may go beyond those gained from adding more plant food to your diet. The research presented at the symposium covered the gamut of health benefits attributed to tea ? from reduced risks of gastrointestinal cancers to improved mental acuity in older adults. And new studies suggest that tea could play an important role in three major public health issues, The Atlantic reported.

Drinking green tea can increase energy expenditure equivalent to burning about 100 extra calories in a 24-hour period. Scientists recommend 2-3 cups of green tea a day in those looking for weight loss benefits.

If you can?t stay away from fatty foods, scientists suggest following up your Big Mac with a cup of black tea. After observing tea?s potent ability to dilate the arteries of lab rats, thus reducing their blood pressure, Ferri tested its effects in hypertensive human subjects. He found, somewhat incredibly, that tea consumption counteracted the meal?s negative effects on blood pressure and arterial blood flow. And, in a meta-analysis of over half a million normal individuals, drinking one cup of tea per day for a year was associated with a reduction in blood pressure equivalent to a 8-10 percent reduction in stroke risk.

During the research, postmenopausal women ? who are at an extreme risk of osteoporosis ? were prescribed regimes of green tea and Tai Chi. Six months later, and with a high compliance rate, those who had consumed 4 to 6 cups of green tea daily, had improved markers for bone formation, reduced markers of inflammation, and increased muscle strength. Scientists explained that while osteoporosis in incurable, the flavonoids and antioxidants found in green tea may work to mitigate its effects and reduce the risk for fractures. And even though it took a lot of tea, no adverse side effects were measured.

Sunrise Mayor: Toughen Daycare Center Law To Require More Disclosure To Parents

By Michael J. Ryan, Mayor Of Sunrise

At four-years-old,?Jordan Coleman?was old enough to know something wasn?t right, but not old enough to protect himself.

It was a hot August afternoon in Florida.? Maybe he was asleep when the ?staff? of a Sunrise daycare center forgot him in the van.? If so, he likely woke sweaty and to a stifling, choking heat.? Alone.? No one else in the van.? Panic would have set in.

Jordan likely would have stopped sweating as the natural defenses meant to cool his body began to fail.? Hyperventilating, he would have progressed to confusion, and ultimately unconsciousness.

How long did it take? What were the final moments like before he slipped into unconsciousness? ?As a loving son, did he cry out to his Mother?

>>> the growing instances of afghan troops and police turning their guns on their american partners has not only threatened to undermine the american mission here, it is also only added more worry and pain back home for those who now see their loved ones threatened from inside and out. before leaving the states, i spent time with one family left both anguished and angry by the manner in which their son died. when their son shipped out to war, like many parents, deep down, the buckleys feared it could end with a knock at the door and those excruciating words no one forgets.
