We need an energy market that delivers fair prices - Flint

19 February 2013

Caroline FlintCaroline Flint MP, Labour's Shadow Energy and Climate Change Secretary, commenting on a warning from Ofgem that falls in Britain's power production capacity are likely to lead to more energy imports and customers paying more, said:

"With warnings that Britain could become more reliant on expensive energy imports it is more important than ever that we have an energy market that delivers fair prices and works in the public interest.

"Labour has set out plans to break the dominance of the energy giants, open up the energy market, protect vulnerable customers from being ripped off and create a tough new energy regulator with the power to force energy companies to pass on savings to consumers. We must also prioritise making Britain's homes better insulated and more energy efficient.

"For the future Britain must become less dependent on volatile fossil fuel prices and invest in home grown sources of clean energy. A clear target to decarbonise Britain's power sector by 2030 must be included in the Energy Bill."
