15 Summer Fun Activities That Won't Break The Bank

?

?

With the summer upon us and the long school holidays that lie ahead, it can sometimes seem a difficult task to entertain your children, especially when you have to be conscious of not overspending on activities for them. However, there are plenty of enjoyable activities that you can do together that won?t cost you a penny. ?Here are a few suggestions for some summer fun that won?t take a bite out of your wallet.

For when the sun shines?

?

  • Picnic in the park. There?s nothing nicer than eating outdoors on a sunny day and your children can help to choose and prepare the contents of your picnic basket. Take a Frisbee, or if you are joining forces with another family, some bats and a ball for a game of rounders.
  • Plan a treasure hunt for your little detectives. Either leave clues round the house and garden for where the next is to be found or when you are on a journey make it interesting by getting your children to look out for certain objects. A small prize at the end is a nice way to reward their efforts.
  • Take a nature walk. You don?t have to go far; your local woodland would be perfect. Use any books that you may have in the house or from your local library to help your children to identify the birds, wild flowers and trees that you might see. Take mementos home such as a pine cone, pretty stone or shell ? you could even set up a mini nature table for them to show their friends.
  • If you have a garden, prepare a small plot for them to grow flowers or vegetables. They will enjoy planting and tending for their crops; it might also be a good way to get them to eat their greens.
  • Take them out on their bikes. Find out where nearby you can cycle off road so that you don?t need to worry about traffic. You can explore further on two wheels than two feet, so cycling can be useful for acquainting your children with the surrounding area.
  • Turn on the sprinklers. Whether it?s to wash the car or to water the garden, children enjoy running through the spray or trying to dodge it. It?s certainly a good way for them to cool down on a hot day.
  • Spend a night under canvas. You needn?t go far ? your back yard is the perfect spot for their first camping experience. Make it authentic by cooking over a small gas stove.
  • Organise a mini sports day. Encourage other families in your street to get involved in the fun of three-legged, egg and spoon, and wheelbarrow races.

For the days when the weather lets you down?

?

  • Declutter their room and have a yard sale. While it may not seem like the most exciting activity, the incentive of spending the money earned on a treat is likely to encourage their participation.
  • Find out which museums in your neighbourhood offer free admission. This is a good option for a rainy day when you want to get out and it lets your children learn more about their local area. Not only that a museum day involves a lot of walking which is great for?family health.
  • Visit your local library. Having some books at home is a good idea for when you want a bit of quiet time, but many libraries organise free activities and workshops for children during the holidays.
  • A crafty way to avoid the rain. Get out the crayons, paints, glue and glitter, and let their imaginations run wild across a blank piece of paper. Start saving up boxes such as cereal and egg boxes, as well as toilet roll tubes, for them to turn into models.
  • Enjoy a spot of baking. Whether it?s cookies or cupcakes, children love to be involved in the kitchen almost as they do eating the finished product.
  • Beat the boredom with board games. Get the whole family playing old favourites such as snakes and ladders, Chinese chequers or Monopoly.
  • Get them to make a scrap book. Your children might like to make it about themselves, what they?ve done in the holiday or about the area where they live. It?s a good way for them to collect memories and will also be treasured by you.
